Causal factors of high remote road emissions • Long distance + 4w drive inefficient vehicles + low occupancy + off-road environments = average > 15 l per 100 km. • Freight based livelihoods: • Long transport and processed goods, food and unprocessed waste result in 1.5 tonnes of Co2 per year per person in very remote communities vs. 0.5 tonnes in non-remote areas. - 11. Future Emissions in Remote Australia • Mobility will increase in very remote locations, especially in air travel in the next two decades and with a growing/aging population. - 12. Switching to RE powered transport • The energy source of electricity determines the level of emissions. This illustration shows the annual carbon mitigation potential of EVs for around 150,000 to 200,000 vehicles operated in remote Australia, (50% of the 2035 remote fleet) depending on different energy sources for the electricity.

- Characteristics of remote Australia at a regional level. Remote Australia has a significant contribution to both the Australian economy and the Australian cultural and environmental identity. Unique environment.
- Tonnes of CO2 per capita per year. Air transport composed of 1/3 domestic and 2/3 overseas (with about half accounting for travelling overseas and the other half for travelling to Australia). As a comparison 8.5 t per person per year for global emissions in the EU. Australian transport emissions account for 30% of global emissions, and without the oversea air trips for around 20%.
- WWF earth indicator correlated to emission levels. The green colour corresponds to carbon neutral and no climate change impact scenarios
- Freight export undertaken with best practice efficient bulk systems. Contrast with inefficient processed product distribution/landfill systems in remote Australia.
- Over representation of air travel in Australian transport emissions
- Currently carbon efficient forms of transport are particularly limited in Australia in general and particularly in remote Australia.

- Telecommunication or costs savings from household and transport energy systems integration will have more of a major positive behavioural impact and will be more effective than carbon pricing mechanisms at the scale of remote Australia (limited to around AUD350 per household per year for a AUD20 CO2 tonne price).
