A curtain wall is an outer covering of a building in which the outer walls are
non-structural, but merely keep out the weather. As the curtain wall is non-
structural it can be made of a lightweight material reducing construction
costs. When glass is used as the curtain wall, a great advantage is that
natural light can penetrate deeper within the building. The curtain wall
façade does not carry any dead load weight from the building other than its
own dead load weight. The wall transfers horizontal wind loads that are

31. incident upon it to the main building structure through connections at floors
or columns of the building. A curtain wall is designed to resist air and water
infiltration, sway induced by wind and seismic forces acting on the building
and its own dead load weight forces.
Curtain walls are typically designed with extruded aluminium members,
although the first curtain walls were made of steel. The aluminium frame is
typically unfilled with glass, which provides an architecturally pleasing
building, as well as benefits such as day lighting. However, parameters
related to solar gain control such as thermal comfort and visual comfort are
more difficult to control when using highly-glazed curtain walls. Other
common infill's include: stone veneer, metal panels, louvers, and operable
windows or vents.
Curtain walls differ from store-front systems in that they are designed to
span multiple floors, and take into consideration design requirements such
as: thermal expansion and contraction; building sway and movement; water
diversion; and thermal efficiency for cost-effective heating, cooling, and
lighting in the building.
Our confidence to enter the new millennium is backed by an office and plant
staff of 101, complemented by 150-300 highly skilled installers, operating
from a 4000 m² complex in SHARJAH UAE City equipped with the latest
aluminium fabrication and assembly machineries from Germany. For the
convenience of our clients, we likewise have 50m² office located in SHARJAH
UAE Centre. Our management Staff is presently manned by architects and
engineers with cumulative 350 man years of experience as designer,
estimators, supervisors and managers. Our Design and Engineering

SPIDER-GLASS SYSTEM

33. Suspended glass has become an element of the expression in architecture,
yielding all the prominence of the structure or its facade
to the transparency of the glass’s reflection.
The Spider-Glass FIXED POINT system fulfills that
objective. As the glass is suspended, it creates a sense
of spatial ambiguity. The fixed system emphasizes the
presence of the glass with an evanescent character.
From the interior, where there is less light, and
therefore more transparency, the look of the overall
structure will predominate. From the outside, the
presence of the glass becomes noticeable through its
capacity of reflection.
The Spider-Glass system uses spider-shaped elements
and anchors between glass in order to construct
structures with glass walls, practically without
limitations of design. The only limit is your imagination.
CONVENTIONAL AND STRUCTURAL GLAZZING CURTAIN WALL
RKN offers the full range of system and custom-
designed windows and curtain walling incorporating full
thermal breaks, drainage and the “rain screen”
principle of pressure equalization. Finishing of
aluminum is available in anodizing and polyester

mounted onto the structural wood beams to provide

finish. The wooden system combines the structural

growth northern white pine makes our wood sunrooms
extremely strong and stable, resisting shrinking,
twisting and checking that is common with growth
wood such as southern yellow pine, poplar etc.

38. Canopies create an esthetical difference in modern architecture as it is used at
the entrance of the building or as a decorative feature in the roof. It usually
consists of steel structure with aluminum cladding or steel structure with spider
glazing or combination of both. The purpose of using stainless canopy systems
is to avoid the natural effects of the rain, sun and snow.
The exterior steel finish shall be galvanized or hot deep galvanized which
provides additional protection and isolation from the corrosive attacks of
chlorides and sulphides, which can be specified as per the requirement of the
