M
y life is so hectic at the moment! There
seems to be something happening every
day regarding work, family, friends and
my rugby club...
But I am not complaining – many, many people
in our country are on their own, living their lives in a cocoon with no contact with
the outside world.
Can you imagine being in that scenario? It is soul destroying, living each day
within the confines of their own homes with only the TV or radio being their ‘friend.’
Perhaps we should all help and shoulder a little bit of responsibility and look out
for those who are not as fortunate as ourselves and help make their lives a much
happier place with visits to their homes to check if they are OK...
Have you been watching the football on the TV recently! I have never been so
excited – it was true ‘Roy of the Rovers’ stuff (younger readers please Google Roy of
the Rovers!). Now we have 4 British teams in the two cup finals, Champions League
and Europa League.
Liverpool’s victory over the great Barcelona was awesome, a true piece of theatre!
And Spurs coming back from 3-0 down to defeat Ajax was gobsmacking! Let’s hope
they can produce one of the best Champions League Finals ever!
Talking of football, I went down to Oldfields Club to watch the final Premier
League matches the other Sunday. It was the day after Uttoxeter Rugby Club’s
Presentation Night at Bradley House Club (thanks so much for a great meal Pat) so
you can imagine that I felt a little delicate...
The weather was glorious sunshine and we all sat outside in the beer garden,
shooting the breeze, chatting away on this and every topic we could think of – just
us ‘boys’ enjoying the sunshine, the chat and a beer... The best club in the country
and the best company – this is what I love about Oldfields...

Local Housing Market Report

A
s we approach the Spring/Summer selling
period of the year, residents all around
are considering touching up those scuff
marks on walls or titivating the garden to bring
it to it’s best. Customers every day are asking me
what they can do to maximise the interest in their
home in order to sell in this current market.
With scaremongering everywhere you look in
the news and potential increase in mortgage
rates, it is easy to think this would be a bad time
to sell your property. Locally in the ST14 and
ST10 areas, there are statistically less houses on
the market in comparison to 2018.
In summary, we are currently experiencing
there isn’t enough supply to meet the demand.
Applying this notion to the housing market, it
means you will likely sell your property before
you find one to buy. Figures so far this year have
resulted in record sales for our local business.
House prices are still rising in Uttoxeter and
Cheadle, due to a reduced volume of stock and
an increased buying demand.
With the Bank of England retaining interest
rates at 0.75%, I expect the current housing
market to remain the same for the coming Q2
and Q3 of the year.
Thankfully, Uttoxeter and it’s surrounding
villages are stabilised by having major employers
within close proximity, and historically, statistics
show that high employment rates maintain a
buoyant local housing market. And as the
impending doom of Brexit closes in, many
owners are hesitant to put their property on the
market with fear of a housing market meltdown,
but as Brexit and all it’s negative connotations
bring, they are completely contrary to what is
actually happening on the local housing market
front.
While the demand continues to outweigh the
supply and employment rates remain high, I can
safely say that our local towns’ house prices are
safe from any of the current political and
financial melancholy we constantly hear about. If

Around thirty members attended our lunch meeting on the last Friday of
the month.
We had a splendid meal at Bradley House, where we dined on Roast Beef
followed by Apple and Blackberry pie.
It was great to get together, to meet up with friends and never to mention Brexit.
This month we had a guest speaker, Jolyon MacLaine who gave us an insight into
his time as a helicopter pilot for the Sultanate of Oman. He flew Super Pumas that
were splendidly kitted out for Royalty and high ranking officials. He spent many
years flying around the gulf and territory of Oman.
He also talked to us about his time as a police helicopter pilot and how helicopters
greatly support and enhance the role of the police.

The Marchington
Singers in Concert
O
ur Summer Concert on Saturday 13th July 2019 will be at The
Renew Church on High Street in Uttoxeter. You may remember
The Renew Church as the Elite Cinema. The facilities are
wonderful inside, being bright and modern. There are very few steps and
ramps provide good access to the main auditorium and it has a large car
park.
We will be performing Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury” as well as a
selection of Edwardian Musical Delights! Tickets are: Adults £12 (or £10

The Singers have delighted many audiences with a wide
repertoire ranging from folk songs and music from other countries and
cultures, to sea shanties and light jazz, as well as more challenging choral

Candlelight - are always well supported and we have featured many guest
musicians, dancers and singers of all ages, several of whom have gone on
to achieve international fame.

oth Cheadle and Denstone were represented
among the large number of Standards which
were paraded at the Commonwealth Graves
Cemetery on Cannock Chase for an open air service to
commemorate ANZAC day on Sunday the 28th of
April. Seventy Four New Zealand Servicemen who gave
their lives during the Great War of 1914/1918 have
their headstones in the cemetery, but why on Cannock
Chase?
The story behind it is this:
The 5th (Reserve) Battalion of the New Zealand
Rifle Brigade (known as the ‘Dinks’) had been stationed
at Brocton Camp on the Chase during the conflict,
arriving on the 27th of September 1917, following the
battle of Messines Ridge where they had achieved a
great triumph. They joined men of the 27th
Reinforcements, who had arrived ten days earlier,
making Brocton the New Zealand Rifle Brigade
Reserve Depot.
Local history records that the ‘Dinks’ were much
loved by the people of Stafford, and the surrounding
towns and villages during their time in Staffordshire,
until they finally departed for the last time in 1919,
holding a farewell parade in Stafford’s market square,
terminating with them presenting their Standard,
(which they had used as a flag), to the Mayor and
Corporation to remind them of their friendship. It is
that bond which is still remembered every year on
ANZAC Day.
Poignantly the Service is held in the open air among
the tombstones, and although overcast the
congregation were spared the wet and windy
conditions of the previous week, and proceedings were
conducted by the Reverend John Davies MBE KStj who
is the County Chaplin. During the Service Wreaths
were laid at the foot of the Cross Monument to the
strains of a lament played by a lone piper.
Standards were dipped during the playing of both
The Last Post, and The Queen. Readings were by Dr.
Bronwyn Evans-Kent of the New Zealand High
Commission, and Ian Dudson Esquire CBE KStj, Her
Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Staffordshire. Proceedings
were rounded off with the Kohima Epitaph read by the
County President:
“When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say,
For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today”
Followed by the blessing and March Off.
ANZAC initially described soldiers who served in
the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (1914-
1918), but is now used to describe any member of their
armed forces. ANZAC Day is their day of
remembrance for their fallen in two World Wars and
takes place on the 25th of April. Services are held on
the nearest Sunday to that date, like our own Armistice
Day in November.
The photographs show the parade approaching the
Cemetery, marching into position (each standard
bearer stands in front of a headstone) at the ‘carry’ and
at half dip, performed when the ground is wet.
Emotional Anzac Day...

Anaphylaxis charity walk
T
he Anaphylaxis Awareness Week was held recently. To support the charity, Anaphylaxis
Campaign (anaphylaxis.org.uk) a local group organised a family walk through the heart of the
Peak District.
Anaphylaxis Campaign support people in the UK with severe and life-threatening allergies.
Andrew Haigh, of Uttoxeter, and his wife, have a son who was diagnosed with Anaphylaxis at 2 and
a half after suffering from an Anaphylactic shock after eating sesame seeds.
Before this moment, Anaphylaxis was something the local family had heard of but not really given
much thought to (I suppose like most conditions if it doesn’t directly affect you).
Last year the family set up a Support Group in Uttoxeter through Anaphylaxis Campaign for those
with severe allergies, not to give medical advice but to share ideas and tips for daily challenges. The
next meeting is to be held on 15th June at Waitrose Community Room in Uttoxeter.

henever a Staffy comes
into care we know that
he/she will be with us for
many months before a home is found
and it is such a great shame. Many
Staffies don’t get on well with other
dogs or cats, but they are great lovers
of people. Cherry is a good example
of this. She came to us having been
found as a stray and is now about 5-
6 years old. She has been spayed,
vaccinated and microchipped so is all
ready to go to a new home.
Cherry is a playful dog who loves
going to Paddocks for Paws at
Bradnop where she can run free in
the field. She runs after a ball and
thoroughly enjoys herself. Her tail never stops wagging. She knows simple
commands and is an absolute joy to be with. She regularly visits Dimmingsdale and
calls in at the Ramblers Retreat and has many Dog Walking friends who enjoy taking
her for walks. She travels well in a car. What she needs more than anything else is
a home and a family to call her own so that she can feel loved and cherished. If you

he Oakmoor Festival and Hill Climb 2019
planning is underway. The Oakamoor Festival
Committee’s plans for 2019 are proceeding
rapidly
The festival takes place this year on Friday 12th,
Saturday 13th, Sunday 14th July.
Now in its eighth, year the Oakamoor Festival offers
a weekend of exciting events.
On Friday 12th July we open with an evening
performance of ‘Song in the key of Death’, a Murder
Mystery, by Ian Adams, at the Valley Primary School.
A night of excitement and dastardly deeds, with a
delicious pie and pea supper.
On Saturday 13th The Oakamoor Revival Hill
Climb takes place on the park featuring over 100
vintage and period cars and motorbikes, During the
day the cars and bikes take part in an exciting hill climb
up Carr Bank and a circular route via Cotton. A real
treat for petrol heads. During Saturday there will be a
Duck Race, Treasure Hunt, guess the name of the
Flower Power Bear and plenty of refreshments
throughout the day. The evening completes with a
session of Bingo in the Village Hall.
Sunday features our annual Flower and Produce
Show in the Village Hall, the wild and wet Raft Race on
the River Churnet and a Fun Dog Show on the
Willows. During the day stalls, face painting and
refreshments will be available.
Across the two days the Free Church Oakamoor,
will be hosting its annual flower festival based on the
festival theme, which this year is Flower Power.
All events and raffles will raise money for a range
of local charities

third summer
festival!

or the weekend of
Saturday 22nd and
Sunday 23rd June,
Alton will once again be the
setting for the village’s Beer &
Classic Car Festival. This will
be the third year following
two hugely successful
festivals which bring visitors
and locals together for a
fantastic weekend. Once
again, the focus for Saturday
will be a street market and
entertainment from 2-8pm
on the High Street and at the
pubs, and on Sunday, the
High Street and all the pubs
will host an array of classic,
vintage and special interest
vehicles. All 5 of the village
pubs will also be hosting live
entertainment from Friday
night and all weekend.
The event has again been
organised by the Alton
Community Events Group.

comprises both residents and

ose Barker presided and welcomed everyone to this very colourful meeting, addressing a sea
of yellow and black. The speaker for the evening was Simon Ratcliffe who gave a most
interesting and informative talk on The World of JCB. The competition for the evening was to
come along dressed in the JCB colours of yellow and black and so many members had entered into
the spirit of the competition that it was decided to pick a name out of a hat to determine a winner.
Details were given on the resolutions which are going forward to the NFWI General meeting i)
Call against the Decline in Rural Bus Services, and ii) Don’t Fear the Smear. The General meeting
takes place in June.
Marg Orme was our delegate at the Staffordshire Federation of WI Spring Council Meeting and
she gave an informative and entertaining report of the proceedings. Staffordshire Federation are
celebrating their centenary this year and President Rose Barker and Sue Ratcliffe represented Denstone
WI at the service in St Mary’s, Stafford.

he Kingsley Holt Community Fund was recently awarded a
grant of £23,716.58 from the Kingsley Community Fund
through the Community Foundation of Staffordshire to add
some much needed new play equipment to the recreation ground
on Holt Lane in Kingsley Holt.
The equipment is now installed, and has been very well
received by the village children. The new equipment supplied by
Kompan, consists of a multi activity climbing tower, toddler swing,
team swing, spica and spinning bowl.
There was an official opening event recently with a ribbon
cutting ceremony performed by trustees of the Kingsley
Community Fund, Mr Ivor Lucas and Mrs Ann Evans.

Painsley Catholic College, Cheadle, has received two
prestigious accolades this spring. The College has
become the first secondary school in Staffordshire to
be accredited as ‘Gold’ by UNICEF UK because of its
continued commitment to the Rights Respecting
School (RRS) programme. Painsley has also received
a letter of congratulations celebrating its high
academic standards from Rt. Hon. Nick Gibb MP,
Minister of State for schools.
Gold Award
UNICEF UK is the world’s leading organisation
working for children and their rights. The Rights
Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that
show commitment to promoting and realising
children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and
young people to respects the rights of others.
Gold is the highest accolade given by UNICEF and
shows a deep and thorough commitment to children’s
rights at all levels of school life. Painsley is not only
the first secondary school in Staffordshire to be
awarded Gold, but it is also the first RRSA Gold
Catholic secondary school in the Archdiocese of
Birmingham, an area which extends from Stoke-on-
Trent in the North to the Thames in the South and
includes seven cities and five counties.
Letter of recognition
In the letter, The College is praised by Rt. Hon.
Nick Gibb MP for its students’ success in terms of
academic progress from joining at age 11, to the
completion of their GCSEs. The excellent rate of
progression is well above the national average and
places Painsley in the top 12% of state-funded
mainstream high schools in England.
Another success measure commended is the high
number of students entering the ‘EBacc’ (The English
Baccalaureate) at Painsley Catholic College. The
‘EBacc’ is a set of subjects at GCSE that is designed to
keep young people’s options open for further study
and future careers. It includes English language and
literature, maths, the sciences, geography or history
and a language. This broad mix of subjects gives
students a rounded education that enables them to
have access to a wider range of opportunities on
leaving school. In 2018,82% of Painsley students were
entered for the EBacc which places the College in the
top 7% of all state-funded mainstream schools.
Mrs Rachel Waugh, Acting Principal at Painsley
Catholic College said, “We are delighted to have
received this letter in recognition of the hard work
and high standards maintained by our staff and
students.”
In his letter to Mrs Waugh, Nick Gibb states,

I
wanted the twins to see Disneyland while it’s all
magical for them as they will be 7 in the summer.
The boys did great with the 11 hour flight and our
first 2 days were spent at Disney... the weather was
amazing and our favourite ride was the new spring
valley car ride where we did 60mph around Disney’s
version of the Grand Canyon... wow they know how to
make rides!
Our 3rd day took us to the Hollywood Universal
Studios where we upgraded to VIP passes and Ethan &
Preston got to meet Dracula. We highly recommend
the Harry Potter ride which isn’t for the faint hearted.
A rollercoaster with steam... fire... and dragons. A
memory the boys won’t forget!! We visited the Griffith
Observatory which is the number 1 thing to do in
California. We looked over the whole of LA from here
and Ethan had a space suit! It’s a free experience and
well worth a visit in the Hollywood Hills.
We visited Santa Monica Pier where you can look
out for famous faces.. we saw a real police chase and
had dinner in the famous Cheesecake Factory. Our
journey then took us along the coast calling at San
Simeon a really beautiful retreat right on the ocean
where we saw real seals basking on the beach.. we also
visited Hearst Castle a real history piece in California.
How they built it I will never know its mesmerising.
We made our way to Monterey where we had cakes
bigger than Hettys! Rosines restaurant is so worth
finding! Carmel was a favourite where Clint Eastwood
was once mayor.. we paddled in the Pacific there..
Highway 1 was a stretch of 70 miles which you could
compare to the Amalfi Coast.
A lot of rainfall had caused several land slides
during the winter season but we were lucky it had re
opened. One of our favourite coffee shops along
highway 1 was a place called Coast and it was a really
quirky experience with coffee as good as Hettys with
waterfalls at the back. The views were stunning. The
drive then took us on some scary terrain ending up on
our last leg in San Francisco where we stayed 3 nights
right in the hub of Fisherman’s Wharf in the arganaut
hotel which we can highly recommend for anyone to
stay visiting one of our favourite places. Pier 39 was a
real hive of activity and we had cocktails in a sushi bar
where the boys learned to use chopsticks!
Seeing the Golden Gate and Alcatraz will be
something we will always remember. The boys had 2
giant balloons in Disneyland and they had travelled
with us the whole holiday and they let them go by the
Golden Gate making a wish!
We had an amazing 2 week trip to California and
experienced such a lot.. the boys had an education
along the way and we made some fantastic memories
that we can cherish forever...

Club April meeting
C
headle Flower Club welcomed not one but two demonstrators, Helen and
Pam. These two lovely ladies took us through Spring with their beautiful
arrangements. We had a “nest” with pink roses and foliage, red tulips and
viburnam – plus coloured eggs of kebab sticks ! A chicken, with flowers and foliage,
made earlier in Blue Peter style, was added.
An interesting collapsed bucket was used to symbolise ‘Spring Cleaning’. With
white chrysanths and lizzianthus. Three ‘tickling sticks’ were added and a dinky
dustpan and brush.
A cast iron vase and a garden trug reminded us of work to be done in the garden.
Pink roses and white carnations completed these delightful arrangements and the
final one used a magnificent heavy carved wooden bowl, with tulips and carnations.
Two cut out rabbits completed this one.
Heather gave a vote of thanks and several members went home clutching their
prizes in the draw.

A
s I begin to write on this glorious day, I know that
I shall upset some of you by stating that I am not
a fan of the music of Phil Collins. I much
preferred him when he was the drummer and then the
lead singer of Genesis, a band comprising a group of
musicians who I always thought were innovative and
before their time. However, there is one of Mr. Collins’
many hits that I do like. It is called ‘Against all odds…’
and it has a particular resonance with recent events.
So many things have happened that could not have
been predicted. Liverpool is facing Tottenham Hotspur
in the Final of the Champions League in Madrid. What a
week of football that was! Liverpool beating the mighty
Barcelona and Spurs beating the questionably mightier
Ajax. In Amsterdam! I went to watch Leek Town play in
the Semi Final against Colne. It was a great game and
Leek went on to win but sadly were later beaten in the
Final. There were two noticeable aspects to the game.
Both teams were full of determination to win and
members of both sides showed considerable acting ability
as players fell to the floor, writhed in agony…and then
got up to play on. These antics were worthy of their
Premier Division colleagues.
And worthy maybe not of an Oscar but certainly of a
BAFTA. Talking of which... what were the odds of a
drama featuring a young, female, psychopathic assassin
winning Best Drama and Best Actress? Did you watch
‘Killing Eve’? It was violent but it was also funny,
intriguing and very stylish. And who amongst my readers
(I hope that the use of the plural isn’t too optimistic on
my part) predicted that the newest member of the Royal
Family would have a very modern name and a second
name in honour of his father and not his paternal
grandfather or great-grandfather.
What is facing us in the future that may be against all
odds? A successful Brexit? A newly fit Andy Murray to
win Wimbledon? Wales to win the Rugby World Cup?
Stoke to return to (and remain in) the Premier Division?
William and Kate to pip Harry and Meghan to the post
and have a daughter named Diana? In the words of a song
from the late Doris Day, a singer who I have always
liked… Que sera, sera!

Spanish Churros with Hot Chocolate
Dipping Sauce
M
y son came to stay and brought with
him his deep fat fryer with the
intention of making fresh donuts. We
started off making some Churros, which I had
not made for ages. We are all totally hooked
again, so delicious and remind us all of our family
holidays in Spain and Gibraltar.
You will need:-
100g unsalted butter, diced
175g plain flour
1/4 tsp baking powder
3 large free range eggs
sunflower oil for frying
Cinnamon sugar for coating
100g caster sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
Dipping sauce
150g dark chocolate
150ml double cream
1 tsp softened unsalted butter
1 tsp vanilla extract
To make the churros, place the diced butter
into a pan with 200ml water and a pinch of salt,
and bring to the boil. In a large mixing bowl,
sieve the flour and baking powder together and
as soon as the water boils stir into the flour and
beat until you have a smooth batter. Leave to cool
for a few minutes, then gradually add the beaten
eggs one at a time, beating well until the mixture
is smooth and glossy. Leave to rest for approx. 15
mins while you make your sauce.
Finely chop the dark chocolate and tip into a
bowl. Heat the cream in a small pan along with
the butter and vanilla extract and slowly bring to
a simmer. Pour over the chocolate and stir until
all combined.
Fill your deep fat fryer or large saucepan with
sunflower oil one third full. Heat until it reaches
180ºC, testing with a piece of bread. Fit a large
piping bag with a large star shaped nozzle and fill
with your batter. Pipe 2 or 3 finger length strips
of batter directly into the pan cutting off each
strip with a pair of scissors. Do not cook more
than this in one go or the oil will cool down and
your churros will not be crisp and golden. Cook
the churros for about 45 seconds to one minute
on each side until golden and crisp. Remove
from the pan with a slotted spoon, and place on
kitchen paper. Sprinkle the churros with your
cinnamon and caster sugar mix.
Serve hot with the thick chocolate dipping
sauce.
These are absolutely delicious and so easy to
make. The chocolate sauce is also delicious with
ice cream.

ow can wearing a button (Pendant) help the
community? That is the question for this
month’s column. Recently I read a piece in the
Burton newspaper about a lady who had fallen in her
home and her life had been saved by a button that she
wears around her neck. Being inquisitive I wanted to
know more and did some research because I like
anything that saves lives and helps people in need,
Defibrillators are another one of my pet campaigns’, but
that’s another story. Anyway, back to the button.
Apparently, it’s a button, that you wear day and
night, that connects to a contact centre in Burton that
is staffed 24 hrs a day – 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
The Service is called Firstcall and if you fall, you press
the button, someone speaks to you, via a Lifelife in your
home, that’s connected to your landline (other options
via a sim card) and the control operator asks if you are
OK? If you have managed to get up and are fine, then
all is well. However, if you have fallen and you need
helps, the control operator will ensure that a member
of their team is dispatched to your home, Their average
response time is 14 mins, On arrival the trained mobile
responder will assess you and either lift you with their
lifting equipment which is called a Mangar and make
sure you are safe and well or if need be, will call an
ambulance if further treatment is required and you are
taken to the nearest hospital, they will also contact your
loved ones to inform them of the incident.
It struck me that this button ensures that people can
live independently, safe in the knowledge, that someone
will be there if they need help. If you fall in the garden
or outside and the control operator cannot hear you,
they will send a mobile responder they call this a No
response call. I am aware that most people have family
living close by, so they would be able to call a family
member, but what happens if you can’t get to the phone
or like me your family lives miles away? I suppose this
is why the service was developed.
Upon further investigation I found out that the
service, Firstcall 24/7, is provided by Trent and Dove
Housing Association. However, this is not just for their
tenants. So, I called and spoke to Phillip McComish,
the Marketing Manager and asked him to explain the
scheme further. If like me your first question to
everything is how much, then you will be glad to hear
that the service starts from only £3.85 per week and its
arranged on a month by month basis, so no long
contract to sign up too. My second question was is it
available in Uttoxeter and surrounding areas and he
explained that the team at Firstcall are located in
Burton, but have outreach staff in Uttoxeter and the
surrounding areas, that is why they can get to people
so quickly. My third question was how do you lift
people up, its not an easy task and he told me about the
lifting equipment, called Mangar and Raizer, that each
team member carries with them and how easy it is to
use. The team also carries a defribulator which is
fantastic, After that I stopped asking questions, not
easy for me, as you know and we just had a lovely
conversation about the service, apparently, they not
only offer the button, but also a number of other great
devices for your home, temperature control sensors,
door sensors, smoke detectors and bed sensors this is
known as Telecare.
I didn’t understand what the temperature control
sensors do, apparently, this sensor detects low and high
temperature within your home and the staff can
prompt or contact family if there is a concern, if the
temperature is too cold or hot in your home, it might
be that your central heating has broken or an outside
door has been left open in cold weather. They also offer
Pill dispensers and are Dementia champions and are
used to providing solutions to support people to live in
the homes safely for longer with innovative technology.
Because Trent & Dove Housing are a registered
society under the Co-operative and Community
Benefit Societies Act 2014. (Registered No. 30668R),
there is no hard sell from them, instead they offer a free
home demonstration and a month by month contract.

Former Royal Marines Commando goes from
rolling in the muck to driving out the muck
A former Royal Marines Commando has changed his uniform and now
drives out dirt and grime as opposed to rolling in it. Ian North, 55 years old,
a local lad from Barlaston, has seen a niche in the market and is plugging it
with Zero DryTime Ltd, a carpet and upholstery cleaning system that leaves
no residue, does not need water and no soggy‘dog’smell.
“The lessons I learnt whilst serving in the Royal Marines have stood me in
good stead”said Ian.“Never leaving an area until the job is done and done
right has proved invaluable in completing a task. If there is a stain on your
sofa or carpet that can be removed, I’ll continue to remove it until it’s been
completely eliminated, something I learnt years ago in training. I can
remove stains that no one else can.”
Cheques for £200 were presented to each of these local charities from monies
raised at the previous Alton Challenge and Fun Runs.
The Alton Challenge and Fun Run was resurrected six years ago and over the
years due to local sponsorship from businesses they are happy to have sufficient
funds to donate to these two very important local charities.
Sharon Ball, from Moorlands Home Link, and Caroline Scol, from North Staffs
MIND, attended the presentation to receive the cheques and give information on
the invaluable work they do for our local communities of the elderly and the young.
The organising committee of the Alton Challenge and Fun Run are busy now
making final arrangements for this year’s run, which will take place on Saturday
October 5th. Further details will follow, and the group will again be happy to donate
any surplus from the runs to these two charities for 2019.

Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
D
o you know, it amazes me sometimes
what I think is worthless old tat is
absolutely worth a small fortune.
Like a lot of people I am an ardent fan of
The Antiques Roadshow and love watching
the faces of the people who take along their
family heirlooms to be valued by their team
of experts.
Not only do they receive a valuation of
their items some people also our astounded
by what their item is actually worth and in
some cases is a life changing amount. On the
other hand some items which have been
handed down to them for generations they
think will assist them in their financial
difficulties in old age due to them not
preparing for retirement are worth next to
nothing, and they leave the show with a face
like a smacked bottom!!
This brings to me a story I must relate to
you of a past experience I encountered.
Quite a few years I was visiting my late
wife’s step father. It was summer time and I
was sitting in his magnificently tended and
laid out garden relaxing in the summer sun
when I espied what I thought at first was a
garden gnome ornament. On further
inspection I discovered that it was not a
garden gnome but actualy a cast iron figure
of John Bull.
For the uneducated John Bull is a
national personification of the United
Kingdom in general and England in
particular and first appeared in 1712.
A lot of products when I was a lad were
endorsed with the John Bull figure depicting
a true British manufactured product. One of
these was a John Bull printing outfit which I
received as a birthday present one year which probably
got me interested in the printing industry which was
eventually to be my lifetime career.
With all this in mind I said to my wife’s step father
“I must have this, and renovate it up and place it in a
prime position in the reception area of my print shop,
would you consider selling it to me and name your
price”.
My wife’s step father replied, “Son you can have it
for nothing as I know you will put it to good use and it
is not really doing a lot of good having it here lying in
my garden.
I enquired to him about the history of the object
and he informed me that it belonged to his father who
had kept the Wheatsheaf pub in Uttoxeter and when it
ticked he remembers its eyes blinking from side to side
and it was in pride of place over the mantlepiece over
one of the pub’s fireplaces and it was most certainly
Victorian.
Anyway I was delighted to own such a delightful
object and duly took it to my workshop to start the
renovation process.
Unfortunately the clock had being lying in the
garden for a number of years which had peeled the
majority of the paintwork off, the clock itself housed in
its stomach was missing and its blinking eyes and
mechanism that controlled it were well rusted beyond
any repair. This did not deter me from trying to bring
it back to some sort of acceptable presentation to show
off in my print works reception area, thinking that it
would if nothing else make a wonderful conversation
piece
After many hours of painstaking work, stripping it
down, repainting in its original colours of red, white
and blue, obtaining a brand new clock face with the
help of a friend of mine whom was a keen holorogist I
managed to get it back in working order and with the
exception of the blinking eye mechanism which would
have cost too much money to replace it really did look
the bees knees and even though I say it myself I was
immensely proud of my achievements.
Shortly after displaying my renovated clock I read
an article in the local newspaper that The Antique
Roadshow was coming to the grounds of
Alton Towers and anyone with any items
that they thought would be of interest to the
viewers were invited along to participate in
the show.
That was it, John Boy my lad, I said, we
are going up to Alton Towers to see what
you are worth.
I remember it being a lovely hot
summers day and as I drove into the
extensive and well kept gardens of Alton
Towers I noticed a huge crowd of people
who had been split into various lines.
I parked my car up, picked John Bull up
and headed for the queues of people. On
approaching I was stopped by an officious
looking person who enquired as to what
object I had brought along to the show. On
seeing my John Bull figure he directed me
to the queue for that particular object.
There were people flying about
everywhere, I think half of Staffordshire had
come along with all sorts of objects to be
valued. Grandfather Clocks, Objet d’art
Jewellery, China & Glass, Paintings and
items of furniture that needed 4 men to
carry them in, unbelievable.
I waited patiently in the queue to have a
conversation with the valuer which saying
there were virtually dozens of people in
front of me didn’t take that long and during
this time I got into conversation during my
wait with other like minded people who
thought that today was the day that their
heirloom would change their lives.
I finally got to meet the valuer and
proudly thrust upon him the fruits of my
labour the man himself ‘John Bull’.
I was expecting the valuer to be one of
the Antiques Roadshow celebrities but alas
he was just an expert in one particular field
which in my case was antique clocks and the
likes of.
Nevertheless the gentleman was a true
professional and espying my John Bull figure
he immediately recognised it and gave me a
brief history of its origination. He informed
me that it was manufactured by an American
Company called Bradley & Hubbard in c.
1870. The value of my clock though because
it was not original with the exception of the
carcass, the actual clock was a new
replacement and I had repainted it and there
were parts missing was worth only what
people were prepared to pay for the object as
an item of interest to them which he said
would not amount to a small fortune.
If the clock had been intact and in good
condition it could fetch at auction anything
up to £1,000.
Had my clock been in this category he
informed that there was every chance that I
would have been selected to meet an actual
Antiques Road show celebrity and appear on
the show!
Not to worry though I had found out
about the history of my clock, its value and
had met a load of very interesting people and
overall had a marvellous afternoon out.
If you have any family heirlooms whether
or not they are valuable or not I would
heartily recommend you attend an Antiques
Roadshow event if it comes near you, you
like me, will thoroughly enjoy the experience of it.

The Shrewsbury Arms in Kingstone is set to
celebrate becoming community-owned
following support from More than a Pub: The
Community Pub Business Support
Programme
W
ith help from the More than a Pub Programme
worth £3.85m, funded by the Ministry of
Housing, Communities and Local
Government and Power to Change, a much-loved pub in
the heart of Kingstone in Staffordshire is now under
community ownership following a 6 month campaign by
locals to save it.
The Shrewsbury Arms was put up for auction by the
owners in September 2018. As the only pub in the heart
of the village, this news hit the local community hard. A
number of locals soon rallied together and set up the
Kingstone Community Society with the objective of re-
opening The Shrew as a community-owned pub. At the
very first public meeting in October, the local community
had pledged £70,000 to create a community-owned pub.
Shares were available at £1 each, but a minimum of
holding of £250 was set. Jonny Grey from the Community
Group said: “This is a brilliant day for the local
community and will be a breath of fresh air for the entire
village – providing new facilities and local employment.
We have had fantastic support from 189 investors from
the village and beyond, including some investors from
Belgium, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, USA and even
Rwanda. After submitting several offers we were
unfortunately unable to agree a price for the property
with the vendors and on Wednesday 3rd April, 2019 at
3pm Kingstone Community Society went to auction with
the aim of purchasing the Shrewsbury Arms.”
The room was packed with committee members and
shareholders who had come to support and witness this
amazing event in the history of Kingstone but as the
hammer went down the lot was announced as unsold as
the reserve of £300,000 had not been made.
Jonny Grey and Bill Pearson from the
Community Group approached the
Auctioneer and negotiations commenced.
The auction finished at 4pm and by 4.50pm
Kingstone Community Society received the
call they had been waiting for - they were now
the owners of the Shrewsbury Arms. The
Society has purchased the Shrewsbury Arms, and will run
this as a Community Hub through community ownership
and involvement. The pub will be run on a commercial
basis, ideally via a tenant. Prospective tenants should
apply in the first instance via our website. Rental income
together with community involvement and volunteering
will deliver community activities, which could include a
coffee shop, essentials shop, place for selling local farm
produce, parcel drop off and a possible post office
counter. The overreaching aims of the Society are for
broader involvement and engagement across all members
and age groups, reducing isolation and encouraging more
inclusivity for all. Crucially the Society will be able to
provide local employment opportunities for several
persons. This project will benefit the village of Kingstone
and the wider community, by allowing access to services,
and becoming a focal point for the community hub. Rural
isolation, community involvement and creating rural
employment are key benefits to this project.
James Alcock, Executive Director at Plunkett
Foundation, said: “We’re so pleased to be able to support
the Kingstone Community Society who are working hard
to make sure their community can benefit from
everything that having a thriving local pub brings.
According to CAMRA, 14 pubs are closing a week. In
comparison, community pubs have a 100% survival rate
showing that they are so much more than a place to buy
a drink; they provide important social spaces and services
for local people, and are central to their community’s
sense of place and identity.”
Jenny Sansom from Power to Change said: “There is
amazing community spirit on display here. We have
already supported over 20 community owned pubs to
open through the More than a Pub programme, and it is
great to see The Shrewsbury Arms stay in the community,
in the hands of the people who value it most. Crucially,
the pub will now offer more than just pints providing a
range of services to help local people.”
Community Pubs Minister Jake Berry said: “Our
Great British Pubs are the heart of many communities,
providing thousands of jobs and boosting our economy
by £21billion per year. I hope the residents of Kingstone
will celebrate their success with a pint at The Shrewsbury
Arms after securing its future through the More than a
Pub programme.”
A pub for the whole community and for future
generations. Somewhere for everyone. The society are
planning a refurbishment and giving the pub a ‘facelift’
with plans in place to repair, replace and update the
current structure. Many shareholders have put their
names forward to help and would love to hear from any
trades person or retailers who would like to help in
anyway with the refurbishment of The Shrewsbury Arms.
We would fully advertise their contribution to this
Community funded and run project. Please contact

open as soon as possible and then relaunch the new look
pub in about 3 months’ time.

ell Readers, with both our Editor Nigel and
myself on the Brexit trail, most of my stuff
ends up on the cutting room floor, so you
may not even be reading this at all, but to hell with it,
I’m going to write it anyway, and if you ARE reading it
- hello!!!!!!
With the Tories making such a hash of the
proceedings, heaven forbid the possible alternative of
Jeremy Corbyn in No.10, even though he says he would
not move from his present house if the unthinkable did
happen, as he has become attached to his home.
Probably attached by the glue the protesters outside his
house have been using!!!
Nigel Farage is the only one who seems determined
enough to push through Brexit now. People have
already shown their displeasure with the main parties
in the local elections, Sandra and I made our protest by
not voting at all!
Meanwhile fair play to Anne Widdecombe for
defecting from the Tory Party out of loyalty to the
majority of the public who voted to leave, and now feel
cheated after the once in a lifetime vote has failed to
deliver. Surely it was not too much to expect for the
government just to get on with it and kill off the spectre
of armageddon which the Remainers would have us
believe will happen when we finally break away.
It’s no wonder that the Conservatives are in disarray
with such double standards within their own party.
They excommunicated Ms. Widdicombe from the party
for switching allegiances to Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party.
Theresa May then sacked her Defence Secretary Gavin
Williamson, one of her supporters, without a trial, for
allegedly leaking stuff to the press. Yet her main
protagonist in the party Anna Soubry continues to
spout her views in Parliament, despite defecting to
‘Change UK’, a party for which her constituents did
NOT elect her, or any of the other rats which left the
sinking ship, (her Constituency voted to leave
incidentally), what a sorry bunch we have sitting on
those benches!
When I am not slagging off politicians, I enjoy
standing at a rugby match shouting at the referee (all in
good taste of course), gyrating around the stage with
the Denstone Players, or marching proudly with my
British Legion Standard (take note Mr. Corbyn I’m
proud to have served MY Country), I do like a bit of
tele. In particular I love to immerse myself in mysteries
and cop shows, particularly the excellent ‘Line of Duty’,
which has just completed it’s fifth series, written by Jed
Mercurio, a Cannock lad, who’s story lines keep you on
the edge of your seat, like last years ‘Bodyguard’ which
he also wrote. Jed’s stories start at the beginning and
finish at the end with just a hint that there might be
more to come in the last episode, leaving us hope there
will be another series to follow.
Sadly that is not the case with a lot of television
serials today, when so many have become too
complicated for thicko’s like me to comprehend. Take
‘The Widow’ which was shown over the same weeks as
‘Line of Duty’ on another channel. It went down the
path of so many other shows these days which start off
with an opening scene to give you a story line. Then
suddenly a sub title flashes up saying ‘three years earlier’
so you go into flashback mode. ‘The Widow’ did this
throughout, with yet another storyline running parallel
with the first, but likewise going into complicated
movements backwards and forwards in time. Someone
who had just been left in a pool of blood, was opening
a door to her flat in the next scene. Had she been made
better? No it was another flashback but with no
explanation. In the main story, the widow of the title,
had gone to Africa to find her husband, who she
thought was dead, but was really alive. This was the
main theme of the story, plus a lot of sub plots, all as
confusing as the main one.
But the final episode (yes I sat through six of them)
was the most confusing of all. The widow was driving
around Africa with Charles Dance, then suddenly we
were whisked away to snowy Wales where a chap was
looking for a dog called Nigel? which had no relevance
to the story whatsoever. Then back to Africa, more
driving around, then whisked back to Wales (was it a
flas back or forward?) where our heroine after trudging
around in the snow with the Welsh chap both out
calling for ‘Nigel’ which at this stage was never seen, the
widow then suddenly took a dislike to the Welsh chap
and told him to go away! Then back to Africa no doubt
by Tardis before finishing in Wales for the finale, from
where she drove off into the sunset with
Charles Dance and a little orphan girl
whom she had met in Africa, but had
suddenly appeared in Wales. Oh and they
passed the missing dog of ten minutes
before, running in the snow as the end
credits rolled? Confused - not as much as
I was. Sandra as usual simply said “You do
watch some rubbish!” and do you know
what ? She’s right.
Staying with TV, we both enjoy quiz
shows and have noticed a new trend
following on from the ‘likes’ and
basically’s’ . The ‘in word’ now is ‘So’ .
Example - quiz master “You are a student
at Stoke University, what are you
studying?”
Answer “So - I am studying drama, I
would like to go into television eventually”
Question Master “How long do you have
left to study? Answer “ So - I am in my
third year, I hope to one day be a director”
. From then on almost every answer starts
with ‘So’. It gets really annoying when a
group of them all use it, for some it’s the
new ‘like’.
Rehearsals are now underway for The
Denstone Players Variety Show ‘For Two
Nights Only’ on the 15th and 16th of June,
always good fun for the family. As always

My beloved Uttoxeter Rugby Football Club’s
excellent achievements are being covered in detail
elsewhere in this publication, but congratulations to the
1st XV on their 5th place finish in Midlands 3 West
North. Coach Nigel Hall is aiming for a top two place
next Season, and with a bit more consistency there is no
reason why they can’t do it. The 2nd Development XV,
showing tremendous spirit, have had some amazing
results which has won them promotion to a higher
league. Whilst the junior section is also showing great
promise, but as always could do with more volunteers
to help with training on a Sunday morning. My
grandson Owen is looking forward to putting in a full
season with the senior squad when he returns from the
antipodes later in the year. Although he is playing rugby
in New Zealand I know he is missing his mates at
Uttoxeter.

interest in The Voice, also Matthew’s Chapman’s
heartfelt poems. Sorry he missed the last issue but he is
back in form in this edition.

comes to town
D
o you love to sing? Do you want to meet new
people? Are you looking to try something
new? Then Rhapsody is for you!
Rhapsody is a brand new mixed adult singing
group, new to Uttoxeter. Open to all ages 18 and over,
it doesn’t matter whether you’ve been more used to
singing in the shower or you’ve been
singing in choirs for years. What matters is
simply that you enjoy singing! Rhapsody
doesn’t require an audition to join - just
come along to rehearsals and take part.
The repertoire will be suitable for all
with a mixture of songs from the musicals,
films and pop songs along with some more
traditional choral music thrown in along
the way.
Rhapsody is the brainchild of musical director,
Gina Baxter. Gina was born and raised in Uttoxeter and
studied Music at the University of Nottingham. She is
currently a piano, vocal and woodwind
teacher, running her own business, as well
as being the musical director of all female
Newcastle Ladies Choir. A need for a new
mixed community singing group in
Uttoxeter was seen and so Rhapsody was
created!
So what are you waiting for? Come
along to Rhapsody and enjoy what it has
to offer. Running on Mondays in school
term-time, Rhapsody will take place at Picknalls First
School in the Treetops Room from 7.30pm-9pm.
Rehearsals started on Monday 13th May.

he first three months of 2019 have not stopped
for the busy members of Staffordshire County
Federation of Young Farmers Clubs (SCFYFC),
who have already held nine of their County
Competitions, hosted a day of Public Speaking
Competitions for the West Midlands Area as well as
organising a successful Turnout Ball in February and
rounding off the social events with the County Dinner
Dance to the theme of “Mad Hatters” in March.
Back in January the New Year started with 13 teams
competition at Stafford Ten Pin for the Annual Ten Pin
Bowling Competition. It was straight into the County
Quiz as the second competition of January, and this
time 20 teams from across the County were challenged
to quiz rounds on general knowledge, travel, famous
faces and music. Later that same week Eccleshall and
Uttoxeter met to take part in the County Debating
Competition, with Eccleshall taking first place and
heading to the West Midlands Area round of the
competition which Staffordshire YFC were hosting in
February.
February saw SCFYFC hold a Clay Pigeon Shooting
Competition over at Doveridge Clay Sports and then
later that month the Darts Competition was held in
Leek. The County Ball was held at The Ingestre Suite,
County Showground with just over 300 members and
guests enjoying DJ Tom Bowers, ex Harper Student and
member of Eccleshall YFC keeping the dancefloor
filled. Rounding off a very busy February, Staffordshire
YFC hosted their fellow West Midlands Area counties
with seven competitions including Junior Speaking,
Senior Debating and a Show Choir Competition.
Eccleshall YFC kept up their winning streak on this day
and will be taking part in the NFYFC Finals of the
Show Choir Competition which is also held on the
County Showground on 6th July.
The County round of the Cookery Competition
was held in March which this year was kindly
supported by Like Nanna Made. From baking to sport,
there is nothing that Staffordshire YFC members won’t
have a go at. Later in March, clubs took part in the
County Volleyball Competition over at Madeley High
School, Newcastle. Then rounding off the month, they
held a Pool Competition, Silage Judging Competition
and in the mix there was an Irish Night held over at
Checkley Village Hall where members let their hair
down in true YFC style!
April has already started with the sound of the
hammer and gavel being knocked down, as 11
members had a go at a brand new competition,
Auctioneering, held by kind permission of Johnsons of
Cheadle, with expert judges, Mark and Meg Elliott of
Bagshaws Llp giving some excellent advice and
encouragement on the night. Waterhouses member,
George Goodwin will go forward to represent
Staffordshire in the West Midlands Area round which
is held at the Three Counties Show in June.
Members also “flinged themselves into spring” with
their traditional event, a Spring Fling Disco, held for
members across the county over a Lower Loxley by
kind permission of the Phillips Family. A great night
was had by all those who came.
County Chairlady Polly Baines said, “With a fully
packed calendar of events and opportunities left in the
year, it is the ideal time for a new member to try out
Staffordshire YFC to open their social life. There is the
County Show week from Wednesday 29th May to
Thursday 30th May is always a great way to get
involved in YFC. The Show Floats Competition at the
County Show is the highlight of the Staffordshire YFC
Competitions Calendar, and with the theme of Disney,
the main ring is going to be a spectacular sight of classic
films and characters.

It was Owd Grandad Piggott and his missus’s
wedding anniversary and buying them a present was an
annual nightmare for Norma, their daughter. The
previous year, she had bought them a dinner service
which had lasted precisely three weeks until it needed
replacement plates, several of the set having been used
as missiles in an argument.
The year before, an expensive Wedgwood vase had
suffered a similar fate, so this year, she had decided to
buy them a pressure cooker. A pressure cooker is a heavy
item so was less likely to be thrown in a fit of temper so
it would stand a chance of staying intact for a while
longer than something of a more delicate nature.
Norma came round with the pressure cooker on the
morning of their wedding anniversary and placed it on
the kitchen table. He prowled around it suspiciously.
‘Worrizit?’ he growled.
‘It’s a pressure cooker dad’ Norma told him.
‘Wotsit do?’
It cooks food by pressure’, said Norma with an
attempt at patience.
‘It cooks it in a third of the time that it takes a
conventional pan.’
‘Pheu! Chinese muck!’
‘Listen, I’m going… read the instructions…
Miserable old bugger!’ she muttered as she went out of
the door, When Norma had gone, Owd Grandad Piggott
did another circuit of the box and regarded it with
interest.
‘Arm gooin ‘ave a goo at this’ he stated and unpacked
the box methodically, setting out the components on the
table, then he got a pencil and paper and started to make
a shopping list. Potatoes, onions, carrots, a swede, oxo
cubes, stewing beef, then he took himself round to Hilda
Aspinall’s shop and came back with a sizeable bag of
provisions. Having prepared his ingredients, he
transferred it all to the various compartments inside the
pressure cooker, added a quantity of water, clamped on
the lid and put it on full gas. Suddenly, after several
minutes, the valve emitted a fierce hiss making him
jump and emit a vile epithet.
‘It leaks’, he grunted. He took it off the gas, grabbed
a dishcloth tied it around the valve, anchored it under
the lid, then back on the gas it went.
Less than five minutes later.. came a savage ‘pop’ as
the safety device shot out and buried itself in the ceiling
causing another tirade of atrocious language from Owd
Grandad Piggott and filling the kitchen with steam as it
depressurised.
‘Towd thee it was chinese muck!’ flared Owd
Grandad. ‘Arll cure it!’
He got the coal hammer, a four inch nail, took the
pressure cooker to the table and hammered the nail into
the hole where the safety device had been and flung it
back onto the gas. Fifteen minutes later, he decided that
it was ‘done’, By now, the appliance was dancing wildly
on the hob and emitting a stifled scream, so he turned
the gas off and tried to open it but the pressure inside
the pot was such that the lid wouldn’t budge… so the
coal hammer came back into operation. He put it on the
floor and started hammering the handle round which
began to slowly turn. Then -
WHOMP!!
The lid left the body of the device at nine miles a
second, hit him in the eye with a ‘bang’ and came to rest
in the corner of the kitchen with a huge dent in it. A
great gout of steam percolated around the room and
generated a stentorian bellow from Owd Grandad
Piggott. Luckily, Owd Grandad Piggott had a solid skull
and what would have done a normal person
considerable damage, knocked him across the room and
stunned him for about ten minutes. Grandma Piggott
screamed and looked up at the ceiling where festoons of
white meat dripped from the plaster. The vegetables had
disappeared. Then Owd Grandad Piggott began to
curse.
He cursed and cursed until he ran out of
swearwords, then made some of his own up but the
tirade lasted for forty minutes turning the milk sour and
causing Grandma Piggott to dissolve in a flood of tears
and acute stress.
Soon after, there came a solid thump as the pressure
cooker hit the bottom of the dustbin and that night in
Tummy Dawkins’s pub, Owd Grandad Piggott with an
eye the colour of a ripe plum professed that it was safer
working down the pit than cooking with a pressure
cooker.

Down on the Farm

H
alf way through the year already! Lambs and
calves are growing fast and crops are
thickening and green.
Swallows flit in and out of the old stables or soar and
sweep through the air, catching insects to take back to
feed to ever open mouths.
Chiff chaffs noisily sing in the trees, having arrived
earlier in the year and Yellowhammers chatter along the
hedges filled with delicately pink tinged flowering dog
rose. The dawn chorus is at its peak.
Another migrant is the pretty Painted Lady- an
orangey butterfly, feeding on thistles and nettles, both
abundant at this time of year.
The field work is building as more cuts of silage are
made, crops are fertilised and treated for disease or pest.
Tramlines are conspicuous now and are used
repetitively to avoid flattening the crop- these are the
tractor tyre marks made originally when the crop was
first instigated ( and a giveaway in historical films as
they are relatively modern ).
Livestock farmers are also busier as lambs fatten and
are sorted and sent to market, dairy cattle still have to
be milked daily and all the day to day jobs still have to
be completed.
The yellow fields of Oil seed rape flowers ( not so
much grown now since the banning of neonicatinoids
and as a result, less food for bees) have given way to the
formation of the seed pods.
These can be attacked by weevils, such as the
Cabbage stem flea beetle, which eats its way into the
plant to lay its eggs . These hatch and the destruction
continues from within.
Shearing has begun and the mature sheep have their,
by now, thick and heavy fleece removed. Contrary to
some social media reports, this is quick, painless and
prevents flies from finding a home on sweaty, dirty wool
and laying eggs which turn into maggots and cause fly
strike ( where the maggots eat into the body of the
animal).
Another disengenuous claim made against farming
is that it takes 15400 litres of water to produce 1kg of
beef. But what is not made clear, is that 83% of that
water is natural, I.e. Rainfall via grass. The intensity and
scale of production and type of feed has an impact on
the water footprint of animals and here in the UK it is a
totally different system to the feedlots of other
countries, a totally low impact and sustainable one.
It’s time for an important day in the farming
calendar- Open farm Sunday on June 9th
A day when normal working farms open their gates
to allow people to see exactly how food is grown and
answer questions about production.
Don’t rely on social media stories from groups with
their own agendas, find out for yourself!
