5. Volunteer - Colbert Charity Classic - June 13-16, 2012: We NEED approximately 20-25 volunteers per day to assist us with a variety of positions
throughout the event and below is a list of volunteer descriptions. For your help, we will give EACH volunteer a Colbert Charity Classic Hat and
one FREE round of golf with a 12/31/12 expiration date. Therefore, we ask you forward this e-mail to other golfers or local residents in the
community who might be willing to help us. Please REPLY to the questions below if you would like to be a Colbert Charity Classic volunteer...
- Which day or days? - Morning or Afternoon or All Day, - Preferred Volunteer Position(s), Volunteer Position Descriptions:
Starters – An Adams Golf Pro Tour Series starter box will be positioned at each tee box (#1 & #10) for starting. Each starter box will be filled with
scorecards, rules and hole-location sheets, tees, pencils and markers. Each starter is responsible for handing out scorecards and rules sheets to
players, and making sure players tee off at their designated time.
Shuttle Drivers – The golf course may have a few holes that need a volunteer(s) to help transport players from one hole to another hole. This
position will have access to a golf cart and help do this.
Standard Drivers – These positions will follow the leaders of the tournament during rounds 3 and 4 – the last five (5) groups of the day. One
standard driver will be assigned to one group of two (2) players, and will follow along for all 18 holes keeping an unofficial scorecard. A standard
sign lists both players in the group and their overall score. This position is able to use a golf cart, or walk if they prefer.
Scoring Checkpoints – This position will be responsible for taking down player scores and using the radio to call in scores to the AGPTS Tour
trailer.
Scoring Tent – This position will be responsible for verifying each player’s scorecard when they finish their round. The volunteer(s) will need to
check that two signatures are on the scorecard and add up the 18-hole score before each player leaves the scoring area.
Hospitality – We will try to station different F&B options on the golf course for players during the tournament rounds. Typically, we have
bottled water and/or Powerade stationed on the tee boxes of holes #1 and #10 (along with holes #5 and #14). We also have various fruit and/or
crackers on holes #1 and #10 ONLY. This position is responsible for making sure the stations are stocked and updated throughout the day.
Divot Patrol – Volunteers that accept this position will be asked to go on the golf course at the end of the 1st and 2nd rounds to fill-in divots in
the fairways (landing areas).
Spotters – The golf course may have a few holes that need a volunteer to spot golf balls off the tee box. This position will be responsible for
watching players tee off on a certain hole and help track their golf ball.
Feel free to reply or call me with any questions and I hope to hear from you soon about your involvement! POC

New pet policy effective June 1: Picerne Military Housing is a pet-friendly company and is sensitive to the relationships that exist between its
residents and their pets, according to Alison Birney, community management director, Picerne Military Housing. While residents are expected
to take responsibility for the care of homes and yards, pet damages continue to be a challenge. In order to maintain the existing three pet limit
and address this challenge, Picerne has revised its pet policy. Beginning June 1, all new leases will require a $75 refundable pet deposit and a $75
non-refundable pet fee for each pet. Current residents are exempt from the policy change unless a new pet is obtained or is not currently on the
lease. Deposits and fees must be paid in full before residents move into a home or before a new pet is brought home. “Picerne understands pets
provide a level of support, comfort and stability to Families and wants to be supportive of Families who have pets,” Birney said. “We worked
6. with our Army partner in determining a pet policy that is fair and reasonable.” Residents are responsible for any damages to their homes, and
pet deposits help offset potential move-out charges caused by pets. Residents without pet damages at move out time will receive a deposit
refund. Residents are allowed to own up to three approved pets in any combination. Dogs and cats are the only authorized pets in Family
housing at Fort Riley. Unauthorized pets include ferrets, snakes, pot-bellied pigs, monkeys and other sylvatic animals. Fish, hamsters, birds, other
caged animals and service pets are exempt at this time. “Poop and Scoop” continues to be a requirement of all pet owners. If residents have
questions regarding the pet deposit and fee or pet policy, they are asked to contact their neighborhood office. By Sarah Chadwick, Picerne

9. Estes Gate to open June 11: With the completion of a $7.2-million congressionally-funded military construction project, Estes Gate will reopen
at 5 a.m. June 11. The gate closed July 20, 2011, to undergo a series of upgrades to bring it into compliance with the Office of the Provost
Marshall’s criteria for Access Control Points. Instead of a single inbound traffic lane, Estes Gate will have four lanes of ID check stations. “This will
allow greater throughput into the post. Before, there was one guard booth with one lane,” said Will Paskow, supervisor, access control,
Directorate of Emergency Services. Paskow said the gate used to bring in about 3,000 people between 5 and 9 a.m. – typical physical training
hours. In addition to more efficient access from the west side of the post, Estes Gate also will have a new vehicle search area, Paskow said. “We
are now in a better position for force protection, allowing us to search passenger and commercial vehicles when needed,” he said. Paskow said
all parties involved with construction, the Army Corps of Engineers, Directorate of Public Works and a contractor out of Texas worked together
in a cooperative fashion to make everything run smoothly. “(Construction) is not completed yet, but so far, everything looks how it’s supposed
to look,” he said. The first week to 10 days of the new traffic pattern will require extra caution as drivers approach Estes ACP, Paskow said.
“Please use patience and cooperate with the staff as we’re getting everybody through,” he said. Estes Gate will operate from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m.,
Monday to Friday, and will be closed on weekends and federal holidays. By Pamela Redford 1st Inf. Div. Post

10. The Army’s Birthday: 14 June 1775: When the American Revolution broke out, the rebellious colonies did not possess an army in the modern
sense. Rather, the revolutionaries fielded an amateur force of colonial troops, cobbled together from various New England militia companies.
They had no unified chain of command, and although Artemas Ward of Massachusetts exercised authority by informal agreement, officers from
other colonies were not obligated to obey his orders. The American volunteers were led, equipped, armed, paid for, and supported by the
colonies from which they were raised. In the spring of 1775, this “army” was about to confront British troops near Boston, Massachusetts. The
revolutionaries had to re-organize their forces quickly if they were to stand a chance against Britain’s seasoned professionals. Recognizing the
need to enlist the support of all of the American seaboard colonies, the Massachusetts Provincial Congress appealed to the Second Continental
Congress in Philadelphia to assume authority for the New England army. Reportedly, at John Adams’ request, Congress voted to “adopt” the
Boston troops on June 14, although there is no written record of this decision. Also on this day, Congress resolved to form a committee “to bring
in a draft of rules and regulations for the government of the Army,” and voted $2,000,000 to support the forces around Boston, and those at
New York City. Moreover, Congress authorized the formation of ten companies of expert riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia,
which were directed to march to Boston to support the New England militia. George Washington received his appointment as commander-in-
chief of the Continental Army the next day, and formally took command at Boston on July 3, 1775. John R. Maass, Historian, US Army Center of
Military History

17. Prevent Uninvited Guests From Ruining Your Picnic: Did you know that each year roughly one out of six Americans (or 48 million people) gets
sick, 128,000 Americans are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases? As picnic season begins, don’t let the uninvited guest of a
foodborne illness ruin your outing! Enjoying a picnic during a beautiful summer day is a great way to socialize with friends and family, but don’t
forget to remember these tips to make your day fun and safe. Wash your hands! Half of all food-borne illness can be eliminated by proper
hand-washing. It’s never too early to start teaching children how to wash their hands correctly, too. Hands should be washed in warm water
with soap before cooking foods and after handling raw meat, seafood and poultry. Hands should be washed for 20 seconds, or the same time it
takes you to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. And don’t forget to wash your cooking surfaces and replace your dishcloths and sponges on a
regular basis. Keep raw meats and ready-to-eat foods separate. Be sure to place your raw meat on the bottom shelf in your refrigerator and
below any ready-to-eat foods such as fruits and vegetables. Also, remember to use a clean serving dish and utensil for any cooked meats that
you are serving to your family and friends. When dining outside, be sure to bring two coolers with you. Use one for raw meats and the ready-to-
eat foods in the other. Cook to proper food temperatures. The only way to make sure you are cooking foods to their proper temperatures is by
using a meat thermometer. They are a very inexpensive way of making sure you save a trip to the emergency room! Cook ground meats to 160
degrees; poultry to 165 degrees; steak/roasts to 145 degrees; pork to 145 degrees with fresh, raw ham to 160 degrees; and egg casseroles to
160 degrees. Also, don’t forget to reheat any leftovers to 165 degrees before being served. Stay out of the “danger zone”! Food should not be
left out longer than two hours at one time. Your food should be kept below 40 degrees or above 140 degrees to prevent it from being in the
“danger zone.” This is especially critical at picnics and pot-luck dinners when the time passes by fast and the snacks and dishes are nibbled on
throughout the day. Be sure to have coolers and ice on hand or a refrigerator nearby to keep the foods stored in. By remembering these four
tips, your picnic outing will be a safe and memorable one!
