This presentation shares Costa Rica's vision on and approach to biodiversity, explaining the policy and legal framework established to protect and sustainably use biodiversity.
3. Objectives of CBD
• Conservation of
biological diversity
• Sustainable use of its
components
• Fair and equitable
sharing of the benefits

5. Biodiversity and development
Achievements
Continental protected area: 24.5% (1
251 371 ha)
Marine protected area: 2.64% (1 501
485 ha)
166 protected areas
Forest cover: increase from 40.3% in
1996, to 52.4% in 2014
Ecosystem Services Payment Program
(ESPP): 19.6% of the territory (1 001
132 ha). Investment (2013): $31
million approx.
ESPP: special program for
conservation gaps
Sustainable Biodiversity Fund: to begin
Challenges
Effective protection and management
of the protected areas
Control the anthropogenic pressures
Joint work between government
institutions
Sui generis system for traditional
knowledge protection
Benefit small and medium foresters
with PESP
Districts with or near protected areas
have low economic and social
development
Implement different governance types
for protected areas
7. Challenge:
Fair and equitable sharing of the
benefits from conservation
• Filling conservation gaps implementing different
governance types, in particular collaboratively
management
• Address social and economic needs of local
communities and indigenous peoples, special those
near or in a protected area.
8. Achievement:
ESPP: Conservation Gaps
• Since 2009, the National Forestry Financing
Fund (FONAFIFO) has destined almost $7
million to ensure the protection of other
identified conservation gaps.
• Result: 11 853.2 has protected through 98
contracts
9. Achievement:
Sustainable Biodiversity Fund
• Endowment fund to preserve private lands
with rich biodiversity
• Target: Small and medium forestry
producers in areas where there is a social
development index below 40% but also
with a high biodiversity presence.
