ORCID is Opt-in
• ORCID is an opt-in system
• You own and control your record
• ORCID record is portable and travels with you
throughout your career
8. ORCID Principles
• Researchers will be able to create, edit, and maintain an
ORCID identifier and record free of charge.
• Researchers will control the defined privacy settings of their
own ORCID record data.
• All data contributed to ORCID by researchers or claimed by
them will be available in standard formats for free download
(subject to the researchers' own privacy settings) that is
updated once a year and released under a CC0 waiver.
• All software developed by ORCID will be publicly released
under an Open Source Software license approved by the
Open Source Initiative.

10. ORCID Governance
• Board is elected by membership
• Board is representative of membership (most of
whom are research institutions)
• Bylaws require Board to be majority non-profit
• ORCID is a non-profit and per US law and ORCID
bylaws cannot become a commercial enterprise
• ORCID is supported by member fees

• Researchers must themselves register
• Researchers own their record
• Researchers decide what data are connected
• Researchers control who has access

13. ORCID Privacy
• ORCID does not collect sensitive data (only
name and email address)
• Only organizations that have signed off on
Privacy Policy may write data to ORCID records,
and then only after asking permission from
researcher
• Researchers may revoke read-write permissions
at any time
• ORCID undergoes annual privacy certification
