Northumbria University is exploring broader implementation of ORCID identifiers across researcher career paths and the research cycle through a partnership. This will involve encouraging graduate students to get an ORCID ID during enrollment and induction, capturing IDs for the annual HESA return, and integrating ORCID into the professional development and student records systems. - First steps with ORCID – introducing a secondary identifier to Northumbria Research Link, our EPrints repository: http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/ Encouraging voluntary sign up, with support from the Scholarly Publications Team (one librarian and three full time equivalent library assistants) Some academic staff had already signed up and others easily saw the benefit. Some resistance due to the range of IDs and profile tools available.
- Sought endorsement from Research Advisory Group (an operational group reporting to Research and Innovation Committee, chaired by deputy vice chancellor for teaching and learning and including deans for research and innovation from each faculty) Allowed us to promote ORCID with the backing of the University – that, of the range of identifiers available, this is the one the University supports and will integrate with its systems Still voluntary, but promoted more heavily. Promotional posters in Research Zone, inclusion in email signatures, including in emails requesting full text or about RCUK compliance.

An annual research conference held in May, an opportunity for staff to share papers with very early findings and for postgraduate researchers to present posters or short presentations about their research area. Research Support team had an area in the central hall with information about our services and facilities (two laptops, two ipads, lots of staff) to sign up for ORCID. Offered a prize draw with £50 of vouchers. Around 100 sign ups, including the vice chancellor (good opportunity for promotion on social media!) Repeating this on 20th May at the 2015 conference.
- Also included ORCID in research skills sessions– Measuring Your Research Performance, Maximising Your Research Profile, Open Access at Northumbria Found this approach of integrating ORCID into existing training worked best for us, as we encourage, but do not require, sign up. Researcher Development Week runs for one week each semester, with an additional Research Event in June. The sessions map to the Vitae Researcher Development Framework and are available online (examples in notes) Library at the end of processes – no flow through lifecycle.
