2. Holistic approach, or anything that relates to non-scientific methods, has a
certain place in the hard sciences. While there are a number of scientists who
believe that there is some credit to the non-invasive approach, the majority of
them still hold true in their belief that most of it are just hokum. In dentistry,
however, it has a place more commonly accepted than anywhere.
Fear of the dentist is frequent among dental patients and so far, there has been
no definite solution in lessening their fright. Yet, there are dentists who persist on
utilising holistic methods as they insist that they work. Much like their honed
skills, there are a process and framework when using a holistic approach in
dentistry.
Basic Principles
Holistic has the same meaning
with peaceful, and it
encapsulates what holistic
approach is all about. Deepak
Ranjan Dalai, a dentist from a
dental college in India,
clarified how the technique in
a submission to the
International Journal of
Advanced Health Sciences
originated. He also laid out
basic knowledge about holistic
approach.

3. According to Dr Dalai, the method follows few basic principles, which are as
follows:
 Prevention and treatment of dental malocclusion
 Avoidance and elimination of toxins
 Prevention and treatment of gum disease
 Proper nutrition
In addition, some dentists use
aromatherapy and
homeopathic techniques. Both
procedures involved using
natural materials, mainly
flowers and plants.
Aromatherapy uses extracted
oils and different parts, while
homoeopathy uses the plants
themselves. Hypnosis is also
an option, but many still
doubt its efficiency or
authenticity.
An Indian Influence
Ayurveda, an ancient medical care system in India, is also popular among
dentists. Its application in dentistry is much like homoeopathy, but in this
method, people use a more varied set of plants. What it shares with the rest
of holistic approach is it does not use toxic medicine and is also non-invasive.

4. Dr Bhardwaj of the SRM Journal of Research in Dental Sciences said that this is
less expensive and enables dentists to provide a more close-up service. If there
is anything that will help with patients’ fear, being able to assure and comfort
them will do the trick.
Combined with certified dental treatments, holistic approach will soon make a
foothold in medicine as a whole. For now, dentists are content in offering an
alternative to medications and injections.
