photographer all over the world. He is a director along with the founder of
SHOWstudio.com the fashion and art photography channel. Nick Knight is

as Vogue, Dazed & Confused, W magazine, I-D, and Visionaire. As well as for

Saint Laurent. Knight has won many awards for his editorial work ion Vogue,
Dazed& Confused, I-D, The face, W magazine and many more. The two
pictures on this page are example of the work that he does. The top picture is
example of his work to do with Vogue and the bottom left pictures shows
examples of his work with super models.
In his early years when he first started out he was commissioned by I-D editor
Terry Jones to create a series of 100 portraits for the magazine’s fifth anniversary
issue. As a result of those images. His work caught the attention of art director
Marc Ascoli. Marc commissioned knight to shoot the 1986 catalogue of avantgarde Japanese designer Yohi Yamamoto in collaboration with graphic designer
Peter Saville. With this step into the fashion world of photography he has shot
both editorial and advertising projects for clients including, Alexander
McQueen, Audi, Calvin Klein, Christian Dior, Jill Sander, Lancôme, Levi

saint Laurent.
3. This image of Lilly Cole shot by Nick Knight for Vogue
demonstrates his editorial work for this magazine that he
has won awards for. This image shows the Angelic theme
of his work. Pale colours have been used to make the
model look very innocent and make the gold stand out on
the dress. This has been taken with a wide shot this is
because the photographers is not far away from the model
and he has no need to have to take the picture from a very
long distance to see the detail. This image has been take in
a studio as you can tell. Artificial lighting would have
been use in this situation to get righting in the right places,
so the photographer can control how bright the room is
and what light shines where. This is a manipulated shoot
and has been controlled we know this as the model is
posing. It isn't natural for her to be standing on one leg
and waving her arms. She is posing like that to look very
elegant and almost as if she's floating. This represents an
angelic approach the image. The colours in this image
compliment each other and the gold stands out from the
white which makes it attractive to the audience.
4. This image demonstrates Nick Knights editorial work using celebrity endorsement (Lady gaga). This image shows a
powerful effect to his work. He has used a very powerful women and used her to create a very powerful and original image.
Strong darker colours have been used to make the model look very strong and it stands out as the smoke makes the image
look very empowering like she is on fire. This has been taken with a wide shot this is because the photographers is not far
away from the model and he has no need to have to take the picture from a very long distance to see the detail. Also the
image has the model stood at the right and the left is just background space to let room for the smoke to spread around the
image. This image has been take in a studio as you can tell. Artificial lighting would have been use in this situation to get
righting in the right places, so the photographer can control how bright the room is and what light shines where. This is a
manipulated shoot and has been controlled we know this as the model is posing. Post production has been used in this
image to create the smoke. The smoke would have been added as an effect after the images were shot. The brightness has
been changed and the model will have been edited to look as perfect as possible
5. These are two images of some of Nick Knights more unusual fashion photography images. These two pictures from his
portfolio demonstrate the wackier and more creative side of his work. The two images contrast each other by the skin of the
models and the outfits their in (black and white, white and black) The backgrounds are reflecting the colour of the model as
you can tell. This makes Nicks work very effective as he is using race to create a very original creative empowering image.
He uses a black and white filter but no in post production he uses it by having the model in black and white and
surroundings. This has been taken with a wide shot this is because the photographers is not far away from the model and
he has no need to have to take the picture from a very long distance to see the detail. This image has been take in a studio as
you can tell from the very plain backgrounds. Artificial lighting would have been use in this image t to get righting in the
right places, so the photographer can control how bright the room is and what light shines where. This is a manipulated
shoot as each model in the image is posing by holding on to a prop or looking away from the camera and sat down. It isn't
natural for her to be standing holding black bits of stringy objects. Post production has been used on these images to make
them very sharp and the post production has been used more on the second mage to obtain the black swirly objects and
make them look they have been moving to blur the out.

7. Irving Penn (born in 1917 and died in 2009) was a American photographer who
was famously known for his fashion work. He was known for his fashion
photography, portraits and still life's. Irving Penn’s career included work at
Vogue magazine and he worked for independent clients like Issey Miyake and
Clinique. Penn’s work is well known internationally and his work has been
shown across the world. Even though he is dead he still continues to inform
people through his past image about the art of his photography.
Irving Penn’s career started when his work was published in the popular magazine
Harpers Bazaar. He worked doing this for two years when Vogue picked up on his
talents and wanted him to work for them. He then got a position at Vogue working
on the layout of the magazine when he started to experiment with the photography
through this he then got to shoot covers for vogue and this is when his career kicked
off as he was getting noticed for his editorial fashion work. Through this he then
started to shoot for independent clients like Clinique and YSL.
8. This Image is one of Irving Penn’ s most famous. It was
used as the cover of Vogue. This is a very striking
images and almost looks like it has been drawn. Penn’s
look is very classy and sophisticated images whereas
Nick Knight went for a more creative style. Due to the
era that Penn started his career his images are mostly
black and white this also gives his work that more
vintage classier affect. This images uses very contrasting
colours and uses a very strong black against a white
background to make the clothing stand out. A wide shot
has been used here to get a half body shot of the model.
The photographer wasn’t that far away so he didn’t need
to use a long shot to retrieve the detail for the image.
This picture is manipulated because it is a fashion shot
they use the model and use a studio to shoot the clothes
the model is purposely looking away and standing with
her arms on her waist. Lighting would have been used to
make this shot look a lot brighter and to make the
contrast of the colours really stand out. Due to the year
in which this was shot they didn’t have the technology
to edit pictures like they edit them now so they really
had to do a good job with the lighting and photography
and that’s how Penn has created this very simple but
classy image.
9. Just like Night Knight Penn uses celebrity endorsement
in his photography ( Nicole Kidman) this images is very
sophisticated and classy like most of his work it has used
a wide lens to shoot the images again because the
photographer is not far away from the model so does not
need a long lens. The model is posing for the camera
which makes it a manipulated shoot. This image is very
controlled from the way she has her arms to the way she
is looking and sitting. Most of Penn's images the model
is in a very classy 1940’s type of look as that is when
Penn started to become very popular. Its another black
and white image as you can see but compared to last
image its in a lot more better quality. The model is
wearing very longs clothes and jewelry this makes her
look very long and tall like because she is sat down this
is really effective because she takes up most of the image
and it really shows off the fashion she is wearing. It is
most likely for their to be artificial lights because it is
conventional for fashion photography to have artificial
lighting. There has been post production done on this
image as you can tell the model looks perfect and has no
imperfections on her face. A black and white filter has
been used in this image.
10. This is one of the newest pictures that Penn shot for
Vogue as you tell because it is in colour compared to
most of his images. This one still follows the pattern of
his images looking very elegant and classy but because
it is in colour it looks more modern than anything else.
This image particularly reflects Nick Knights
photographs the most because the model is in a very
out there dress and it has a sheer white background.
The colours in this image are very bright and flowery
compared to his very dark blacks and whites which is
shot with mostly. As you can see the model is posing
which shows this was a manipulated shoot and not
candid. Artificial lighting has been used to make the
model look very bright and to show off the colours in
the dress and her cheek bones. The lighting makes the
model looking very on point and sharp. The images
itself is very flowery and girly which is represented by
the dress and pinks and greens. A wide lens has been
used to fit in the model with her legs stepped apart and
because the photographer was not stood well away
from the model. As this is a lot more modern post
production has been used on the image to create the
model to look perfect the model has no imperfections or
blemishes on her skin at all and it is completely
flawless. The contrast has been controlled to make her
stand out from the background and she has been made
to look very goddess like.
