1. Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to make a close analysis of the narrative structure of Emily Bronte's
Wuthering Heights. The study includes an examination of the position and function of Lockwood and
Nelly Dean as both narrators and characters in the novel. A close attention will also be given to the time
structure of the novel in an attempt to find out how the structure of the story affects its message and
thematic statements. More importantly, this research paper aims at showing that the narrative positions of
the two narrators along with the author's experimentation with the time structure in the novel convey an
effect of suspense and of enhanced realism. The two narrators Nelly and Lockwood are present as
characters in the stories they narrate.
To achieve this objective, we have tried to apply a textual approach that investigates the structure of
the novel with occasional use--when necessary-- of narratological terminology and procedures,
particularly ones borrowed from Wayne C Booth, Gerard Genette, and Gerald Prince.
