The true wartime story of a tiny teddy who always comes home.
During World War II,ten thousand children from British cities were sent to live with host families
away from the war zone. Bear on the Homefront retells the true story of two “guest children,”
Grace and William Chambers, who cross the ocean and meet Aileen Rogers, a nurse serving on the
homefront.With her is Teddy,the stuffed bear whose trip to the front lines of World War I is chron-
icled in A Bear in War. Using archival images and Aileen Rogers’ wartime diary, Stephanie Innes and
Harry Endrulat recreate William and Grace’s journey by train to their host family’s prairie farm.
Aileen, seeing William’s anxiety, lets her stuffed friend stay with the little boy throughout the train
ride and ultimately throughout the war. Brian Deines’s soulful oil paintings capture the spirit of the
war years,communicating both the loneliness of children separated from their families and the joyful
conclusion when Grace,William and Teddy all return to their homes again.
The great-niece of Aileen Rogers, Stephanie Innes co-wrote A Bear in War and Bear on the
Homefront. Stephanie lives in Tucson, Arizona.
Writer and editor Harry Endrulat has also written numerous books for the Max and Ruby
series and The Adventures of Franklin and Friends collection.
Brian Deines is the illustrator of over twenty children’s books, including Caribou Song and
Dragonfly Kites, which were shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for illustration.

husband Roy Miki, is her first book.

Soapstone Signs

Only the carver knows the soapstone’s true shape.
One spring,a nine-year-old Cree boy is visited by a master soapstone carver named Linny,who
gives him four pieces of soapstone. The primary secret to carving, the boy learns, is recog-
nizing that each piece of soapstone already holds its true form inside. Linny teaches the boy to
listen to the soapstone and look to the world around him for signs as to what to carve. As the
seasons change, the young boy’s experiences lend him opportunities to develop his carving skills
and become attuned to the signs around him. He eagerly awaits the following spring, which will
bring Linny’s return and a chance to show off his carvings.
Jeff Pinkney holds an English degree from Trent University, is a former newspaper columnist,
and currently works as a business advisor. Soapstone Signs, his first work of fiction, draws on Jeff’s
experiences while traveling as a development consultant in Canada’s James Bay Frontier, where
he acquired a deep appreciation for the people and the landscape. Jeff is an emerging poet, writer
and an amateur stone carver. He and his wife Leslie share a brood of three story-loving daughters.
They are surrounded by soapstone carvings in their Peterborough, Ontario home.
