What is Teacher Talking Time (TTT)?

It is the amount of time that the teacher spends talking in class.




          What is Student Talking Time (STT)?

It is the amount of time that students spend talking in class.
Who Should Talk more in Class?


Hammer (1998), Hall (2011), and others agree that STT must be
maximized in the classroom because that is the chance that
students have to practice their English, especially EFL students.
To this respect, the web page cotterhue.hubpages suggests that
the time the teachers should spend talking in class is 30% of the
whole time dedicated to the class, and students 70%.
Who Should Talk more in Class?

However, Hammer (1998) and Hall (2011) state that there will
be moments that the teacher has to explain complex lessons
or activities that will require more time talking in the class.
Besides,    the   learners    need    language    input    and
comprehension that only the teacher can provide them in the
classroom. Just in these cases, TTT will work!

Jones and Von Baeyer (1983) assert that “…the more

students talk, the more fluent they will become.”
