DLSU LIBRARIES
INTRODUCTION
DLSU Libraries’ Collection
Development Mission
• To build and maintain an adequate and well-
balanced collection that responds and
supports the needs of its library clienteles
• To develop a mixed collection of resources
that adheres to standards, both qualitatively
and quantitatively
Standard Tools Used for Assessing
the Engineering Collection
• 2001 - Books for College Libraries (BCL)
• 2004 - Best Book for Academic Libraries (BBAL)
• 2014 - Choice Magazine
Objectives of the Study
to ascertain the present
profile of the engineering
and technology collections;
to find out how it has grown in the last five years and
at what pace it is developing in relation to the number
of publication output produced in the last 5 years;
to examine how the present collection
fare with the titles listed in the Choice
Magazine (issues for 2010-2014);
to identify the quality of
the collection based on
Choice Magazine; and
to identify
the gaps in
the collection
METHODOLOGY
Assessment Techniques
• Collection profiling – provides a breakdown
(number of titles/volumes) of the engineering
holdings by class letter
• List check or check listing - compares the
library’s holdings against a standardized or
authoritative list.
Collection Profiling Procedure
Examine difference between holdings and publication output to identify strengths and
weaknesses of the engineering collection in terms of quantity
Determine number of publication output using Books-in-Print (BIP) Global Edition
From year 2010-2014 (5 years)
Parameters: written in English, for college level and published in the
United States, United Kingdom and Canada
Extract engineering holdings from Sierra
Number of tiles/volumes per class letter
List Checking Procedures
9
Analyse results and integrate finding with results of other techniques
Determine percentage of library’s holdings in relation to the number of titles being
checked
Record number of titles held that are listed in Choice
Check list completely against OPAC
Exact match – put check mark Other edition – indicate date No match – put “0”
Select the list appropriate to the subjects and the goals
Choice Magazine, 2010-2014

Findings
• The DLSU was able to acquire 58 “best” titles from AY 2010-11
to 2014-2015 out of 645 best titles.
• 4 or (6.45%) of the titles acquired by the Libraries listed in
Choice were assigned recommendation levels 0 and 1, which is
an indication of poor selection judgment as far as the four
titles are concerned.

CONCLUSIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSION
• The DLSU Libraries
engineering book
collection is
deficient in terms
of quantity due to
the very low
acquisition rate.
RECOMMENDATION
• Carry out a more aggressive
acquisition program to catch
up with the number of
engineering titles being
published annually.
• Considering the cost of
developing the engineering
collection, it would be best to
prioritize areas supporting the
university programs where the
gaps are wide (TA, TP, TH, and
TJ, respectively).
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
CONCLUSION
• The engineering
collection also fell
short in terms of
quality, that is, as
far as Choice
Magazine is
concerned.
RECOMMENDATION
• Find ways on how to
improve on the
selection process
ensuring that most
of the essential titles
are acquired
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Look closely into the collection development
practices and find ways on how to improve on
the selection process ensuring that most of
the essential titles are acquired.
• Identify a selection tool which can be used by
faculty members in recommending books for
acquisition would be desirable.
Thank you!

The DLSU Libraries Engineering Collection

  • 1. THE DLSU LIBRARIES' ENGINEERING COLLECTION: AN ASSESSMENT REPORT USING THE LIST CHECKING APPROACH by Elizabeth B. Padilla Ana Maria B. Fresnido Vivian C. Soriente Cynthia L. Cordova DLSU LIBRARIES
  • 3. DLSU Libraries’ Collection Development Mission • To build and maintain an adequate and well- balanced collection that responds and supports the needs of its library clienteles • To develop a mixed collection of resources that adheres to standards, both qualitatively and quantitatively
  • 4. Standard Tools Used for Assessing the Engineering Collection • 2001 - Books for College Libraries (BCL) • 2004 - Best Book for Academic Libraries (BBAL) • 2014 - Choice Magazine
  • 5. Objectives of the Study to ascertain the present profile of the engineering and technology collections; to find out how it has grown in the last five years and at what pace it is developing in relation to the number of publication output produced in the last 5 years; to examine how the present collection fare with the titles listed in the Choice Magazine (issues for 2010-2014); to identify the quality of the collection based on Choice Magazine; and to identify the gaps in the collection
  • 7. Assessment Techniques • Collection profiling – provides a breakdown (number of titles/volumes) of the engineering holdings by class letter • List check or check listing - compares the library’s holdings against a standardized or authoritative list.
  • 8. Collection Profiling Procedure Examine difference between holdings and publication output to identify strengths and weaknesses of the engineering collection in terms of quantity Determine number of publication output using Books-in-Print (BIP) Global Edition From year 2010-2014 (5 years) Parameters: written in English, for college level and published in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada Extract engineering holdings from Sierra Number of tiles/volumes per class letter
  • 9. List Checking Procedures 9 Analyse results and integrate finding with results of other techniques Determine percentage of library’s holdings in relation to the number of titles being checked Record number of titles held that are listed in Choice Check list completely against OPAC Exact match – put check mark Other edition – indicate date No match – put “0” Select the list appropriate to the subjects and the goals Choice Magazine, 2010-2014

  • 24. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS CONCLUSION • The DLSU Libraries engineering book collection is deficient in terms of quantity due to the very low acquisition rate. RECOMMENDATION • Carry out a more aggressive acquisition program to catch up with the number of engineering titles being published annually. • Considering the cost of developing the engineering collection, it would be best to prioritize areas supporting the university programs where the gaps are wide (TA, TP, TH, and TJ, respectively).
  • 25. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS CONCLUSION • The engineering collection also fell short in terms of quality, that is, as far as Choice Magazine is concerned. RECOMMENDATION • Find ways on how to improve on the selection process ensuring that most of the essential titles are acquired
  • 26. RECOMMENDATIONS • Look closely into the collection development practices and find ways on how to improve on the selection process ensuring that most of the essential titles are acquired. • Identify a selection tool which can be used by faculty members in recommending books for acquisition would be desirable.

Notas del editor

  1. Assessment samples (titles) conducted by DLSU librarian Citation analysis : utilizes bibliographic entries cited in a scholarly work or other such as bibiliographies or indexing tools. Expert appraisal: this requires an expert subject specialists to evaluate the collection
