Summer Reading
Recommendations
2017
 NOTE TO PARENTS
 The text gradient is designed to be a flexible tool to help you choose texts
for your child's independent reading, not to define them. It is not the sole
definition of achievement in reading. While in general all students read some
books at most levels, it should be clear that: They are not expected to
read every book on a level.
 There is no prescribed "order" of the books at any given level.
 Children making fast progress will skip levels.
 You can always move up or down the gradient as you see the need for easier
or more challenging texts for your children.

 Why do a Read Aloud?
 Students can hear structures and language.
 You act as a model for behaviors, skills, and strategies.
 Students practice, think, and talk about reading.
 Students develop vocabulary.
 Steps:
 1. Give a book introduction
 2. Read the book aloud
 3. Have a conversation

Summer reading recommendations 2017

  • 2.  NOTE TO PARENTS  The text gradient is designed to be a flexible tool to help you choose texts for your child's independent reading, not to define them. It is not the sole definition of achievement in reading. While in general all students read some books at most levels, it should be clear that: They are not expected to read every book on a level.  There is no prescribed "order" of the books at any given level.  Children making fast progress will skip levels.  You can always move up or down the gradient as you see the need for easier or more challenging texts for your children.  Source: Leveled Books K-8 by Fountas and Pinnell
  • 3.  Why do a Read Aloud?  Students can hear structures and language.  You act as a model for behaviors, skills, and strategies.  Students practice, think, and talk about reading.  Students develop vocabulary.  Steps:  1. Give a book introduction  2. Read the book aloud  3. Have a conversation 
