Notas del editor
-Hello everyone, we are team quinque and we would like to welcome you in our presentation
-Our presentation will have the following structure: 1)we will begin with the research process
2)then we will move on with the presentation of our ideas and the way we collaborated with the platform
3)then we will have a quick overview of the OpenIDEO’s evolution
4)and finally we will make some suggestions for the improvement of some processes and the overall functioning of the platform
Now regarding the research process :we wanted our research to have the same format with the OpenIDEO’s challenges and especially the idea generation stage1)we started with platform understanding: -get to know the platform,we had a quick overview of the previous challenges, and we read the guideline in how to generate an idea 2)then we moved to the challenge analysis and we got informed about the different missions ,the background information and the stages of the challenge 3)Then we moved to the identification &research. Internal and externally,we identified the main problems(food, water, education, aids, malaria) and researched about child phycology ,brain architecture, music and the impact it haves on children ,interactive games
Then in order to create an idea with a solid structure we created a mind map with our key deliverables and stakeholders
We wanted to focus our project on very poor communities, where there is very little or not existing infrastructure.
We also wanted to take advantage of the strong base of trusted human capital that exists in these communities.
We also wanted to ensure that resources, like toys and instruments were able to be constructed from locally available meterials.
Our idea;
Train support staff in nutrition
& early development principles.
These support staff go to isolated communities
and set up a PlaySchool,
with the purpose of supporting early development in children,
as well as families and communities.
They will recruit local volunteers,
and train the volunteers in the principles of development and nutrition,
as well as how to run and administer the PlaySchool
Once the PlaySchool is sustainable,
they will move on to create the the same project in another community.
Five pieces included in our PlaySchools activities
hygiene
regarding principles that are specific for developing children
music, craft & storytelling
important for early development,
And help build a sense of cultural identity
learning games
such as games
to support numerical, vocal and literal skills
physical games
like football
here we can use resources such as
the ‘One World Futbol’
& nutrition
teaching about
locally available food sources
to best support developing children
The combination of these five aspects supports all major areas of early development, and provides an encouraging environment for the children.
After our idea posted, we received many comments and suggestions. We replied those comments and updated our idea according to their good suggestions.
Locally available material and playground safety.
Music instruments that are relevant to local culture(Shekere/ Balaton)
Out second idea,
is working with food manufacturers to include nutritional information
on food packaging.
This will benefit children and mothers in developing areas,
especially in areas where this information is not legally required
Our interaction with the platform falls into 2 staged. The first one was within the context of the idea ,with comments, applauses and collaboration we “grew” our idea and we tried our best to reach our goal which is to contribute and help the community work towards a sustainable solution
The 2nd was our collaboration within the platform. From our idea, we formed alliances with groups of thinkers, we contributed to other challenges and we did some further research, comments applauses and we built on our teammates ideas.
OpenIDEO has launched 29 challenges since it’s creation, across a variety of topic, such as healthcare, environmental protection and technology innovation.
The first challenge focused on designing a logo for OpenIDEO, and since then they have added many features to the site, such as video.
They have also added phases called “realization” and “impact”, so that users can share stories.
In 2011 they added two roles, called Social Media Management and Challenge Leader.
They also added different missions to the research and ideas phases.
This year, they have added support to the community, by creating a group of specialist advisors.
We can see that OpenIDEO has made many changes in the past. With more and more people and communities participating, this trend seem likely to continue.
next let’s look what we have observed and what we can do to improve it in managing knowledge.
When we worked in the OpenIdeo platform, we found that more than18 ideas have been put into practice and generated great impact . These successful experience is a big fortune for OpenIDEO. However, successful experience has only been summarized in form of stories. The knowledge is not used efficiently.
Secondly, when our group went through all the researches and most of the ideas, we found that there are so many similar or identical ideas.
Last but not least, we found that though OpenIDEO has already built up a rating systems, the information here, for example, the applause, the comment can be manipulated.
In order to solve these problems, based on the theory we learn in the lecture, our group come up 3 main recommendations.
The process of developing a good idea in OpenIDEO is an emergent and interactive process. As we can see from the screen that in OpenIDEO, idea generation, refinement, diffusion and implementation, these four different parts in the progress interact with each other.
However, the problem here is knowledge extracted from the whole process is not used. When our group tired to find whether there are knowledge extracted from the successful experience that we can use for reference, we have to go through almost every post in each phase. It is quite time-consuming and inefficient.
So, our first suggestion is to establish a Learning Grid. In the learning grid, reliable researches conducted in the research phase are refined, summarized and stored in Learning Grid. Then, when there begins another challenge, users may start read relevant research result in Learning Grid first, then conduct deeper and more helpful investigation.
Successful implementation experience is also an important component in Learning Grid. The successful model can be extracted from the implementation and used in other situations. If OpenIDEO put it in the learning grid, users are able to easily find it and use it as a reference when generating ideas to new challenges.
Besides the Learning Grid, our group also suggest OpenIDEO to develop a “virtual mentor” programme. Through this programme, new hands in the community could learn real-life experience from experienced members.
Both Learning grid and virtual mentor contribute to using knowledge to generate ideas.
As we mentioned before, we found that there are so many similar or identical ideas. Of course, in the refinement phase, it is possible that some similar ideas may be combined through collaboration. However, the collaboration starts too late, members have already spent too much time and energy in doing the same thing in the research and idea phase.
Our group think that we can set up some small groups or communities. For example, our group is interested in child mental development and education. We may join the small group and find fellows there who have the same interests or expertise.
Moreover, the group you joined which be showed as a tag in your profile, which is helpful for finding a fellow. Hence, the small groups based on common interests and expertise, as well as the tags in profile, make it easier to collaborate with others and reduce the repetition of ideas and researches.
