3. MAIN MARKETS FOR SPANISH FURNITURE
France, Portugal, Germany, United Kingdom and the Netherlands are the main
Spain’s furniture purchasers in the period January-April 2013.
Among top markets for Spain’s products, it’s worth noting the remarkable increase of
sales to France, Germany, United Kingdom and the Netherlands that went up by
24.5%, 11.5%, 20.8% and 84.7%, respectively. In spite of dropping exports to Italy (-
33%) and Portugal (-2.1%), EU countries maintain their leading position among
Spain’s major markets. Furniture sales to six main EU markets made up 59.5% of total
exports.
France, whose furniture purchases from Spain amounted to 162 million euros, stands
out as the top importer of Spanish furniture. With a share of 31.8% of Spanish
exports, France consumes more Spanish products than Portugal, Germany, United
Kingdom and the Netherlands altogether (24.7%).
A country where Spain is doing particularly well is Russia, that ranks now 6th among
main Spain’s clients – just behind 5 EU countries- with a +28.2% increase in furniture
purchases from Spain. Not less significant is also the increase of exports to the United
States (+14.7%) and Saudi Arabia (+88.8%).

5. On the whole, it should be pointed out that Spanish furniture sales have shown an
upward trend during 2013 first four months. Encouraging results have been registered
in most EU countries, while Spain’s furniture exports have picked up also in the United
States (+14.7%) and in some Latin American countries, such as Brazil
(+63.6%), Colombia (+118.6%) and Chile (+46.4%), due to the growth of the real estate
and hospitality sectors in these countries.
Spain’s furniture is also highly appreciated in the Middle East, where exports to Saudi
Arabia, that ranks 10th, grew by +88.8%. Purchases from Turkey, UAE, Qatar and Kuwait
increased by +108.8%, + 41.5%, +24.5% and +300.3%, respectively. Remaining in this
area, Israel occupies the 20th position with a growth of +65.7%.
As for Africa, Equatorial Guinea expanded its purchases of Spain’s furniture by
+11.2%, ranking now 18th. Best results have been obtained in Algeria where imports
from Spain rose dramatically by +107.2% moving the country to the 21st position. Sales

MAIN TRENDS IN SPANISH FURNITURE EXPORTS
6. Looking at results by Autonomous Communities
(Regions), despite its negative result (-2.4%), Catalonia
keeps on playing a leading role in the national furniture
exports. The Valencia Community, that ranks second, is
gaining positions with furniture exports registering an
encouraging +3.1% increase. It is worth to point out that
both Communities represent 45.8% of the national
furniture exports, showing that sales to foreign markets are
largely concentrated in only two regions.
With exports amounting to 14.6 million euros, Murcia
(+4.3%), one of the main Spain’s furniture producer
clusters, ranks now tenth.

7. As far as the main furniture supplier countries are
concerned, China, whose furniture purchases from Spain
amounted to 144.6 million euros (-14.7%), consolidates itself
as the main origin market, concentrating almost the 23% of
Spain’s imports of furniture.
Four countries of the EU (Portugal, Germany, Italy and
France) rank 2nd to 5th just behind China, representing 41.6%
of total imports.
As it can be observed, all Spain’s main furniture suppliers
have registered negative results, due to the drop of Spain’s
domestic demand.
