Collective Bargaining Presented By ParomitaKanjilal Management Institute Of Durgapur MBA, 4thSem Specialization-HR( Human Resource ) Roll No.-MB/09/20
Collective bargaining is a process of negotiations between employers & the representatives of a unit of employees aimed at reaching agreements which regulate working conditions. Collective agreements usually set out wage scales, working hours, training, health and safety, overtime, grievance mechanisms and rights to participate in workplace or company affairs. The union may negotiate with a single employer or may negotiate with a group of businesses, depending on the country, to reach an industry wide agreement. A collective agreement functions as a labor contract between an employer and one or more unions. Collective bargaining consists of the process of negotiation between representatives of a union and employers in respect of the terms and conditions of employment of employees, such as wages, hours of work, working conditions and grievance-procedures, and about the rights and responsibilities of trade unions. The parties often refer to the result of the negotiation as a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) or as a collective employment agreement (CEA) What is Collective Bargaining?
The phrase collective bargaining is said to have been coined by Sydney & Beatrice Webb of Great Britain which is said to be the “Home of collective bargaining”. The idea of collective bargaining emerged as a result of industrial conflict & growth of the trade union movement, and was first given currency in the United States by Samuel Gompers. In India, the first collective bargaining agreement was concluded in 1920 at the instance of Mahatma Gandhi to regulate labour-management relations between a group of employers & their workers in the textile industry in Ahmedadbad. The History Of Collective Bargaining
First Agree on the Terms and Scope of the Dispute To increase your negotiation skills: 1)Define where all parties agree and disagree - the main sticking points become apparent and areas of possible agreement come to light.    2)Discover possible areas of agreement - it sets a more balanced tone as all parties proceed further.  Negotiating Skills
See Yourself from the Other Party’s Point of View You can agree or disagree with whatever the other party sees or believes, but you will do well to understand it.  By understanding it, you will have the advantage in knowing how to present what you seek as a fair outcome in terms that the other party will be able to accept and understand, rather than fear.  Negotiating Skills
Be Honest, and Get Your Facts Right You can't negotiate successfully if you lose or lack credibility.  Never knowingly make a false statement or assertion. Negotiating Skills
Use Silence To Your Advantage Loud displays, or "blowing off steam" will almost always work to your disadvantage.  Experienced negotiators who use such styles know how to feign such emotions at strategic points in time, in a purposeful fashion.  So stay cool. Negotiating Skills
Collective Bargaining is important in different aspects:- Employees Aspects Collective bargaining develops a sense of self respect and responsibility among the employees. It increases the strength of the workforce, thereby, increasing their bargaining capacity as a group. Collective bargaining increases the morale and productivity of employees. Conclusion
Employers Aspects It becomes easier for the management to resolve issues at the bargaining level rather than taking up complaints of individual workers. Collective bargaining tends to promote a sense of job security among employees and thereby tends to reduce the cost of labor turnover to management. Collective bargaining opens up the channel of communication between the workers and the management and increases worker participation in decision making. Continued
Soceital Aspects Collective bargaining leads to industrial peace in the country. It results in establishment of a harmonious industrial climate which supports which helps the pace of a nation’s efforts towards economic and social development since the obstacles to such a development can be reduced considerably. The discrimination and exploitation of workers is constantly being checked. Continued
