Till around a decade ago, cars would drive through the lanes of Safdarjung Hospital
to avoid the heavy traffic on Ring Road. Not anymore. Doctors now say there is
more traffic in the hospital complex than on Ring Road and Aurobindo Marg on
which the hospital is located. The worry is not the cars, however, it's the noise they
make; new studies link noise to health problems such as sleep deficiency and
headaches. The situation at AIIMS, India's premier hospital, and most other
hospitals in Delhi is no better. During daytime, the institutions exist amid the
cacophony of cars, autos, bikes and ambulances with blaring sirens.
Recently, doctors at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research
in Chandigarh conducted a survey to assess nonauditory impact of noise pollution
on and around the hospital campus. They found that almost three-fourths of the
respondents (74%) reported irritation with loud noise, and 40% talked of
noiserelated headaches.Sleep disturbance, which has wide-ranging effects on the
cardiovascular, endocrine, immune and nervous system, was also found to be
common.

Published in the latest issue of journal Science of the Total Environment, the findings
revealed that 29% of the respondents complained of loss of sleep due to noise and 8% said
they had hypertension that could be related to the disturbance caused by noise. “There is
need to address the issue of noise pollution and associated health risks, especial ly for the
vulnerable population,“ the researchers said, adding that non-auditory effects studied in
their work could be a factor behind the increase in non-commu nicable diseases.
Dr A K Rai, medical superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, told TOI that noise pollution in
hospitals was caused by multiple factors like overcrowding, nearness to main roads and
construction work. “Traffic on the campus, however, remains the biggest source of noise
pollution,“ he admitted. “We are trying to reduce the racket, but there are challenges such
as auto-rickshaws parking inside to solicit patients.“
The World Health Organization recommends background noise in hospital rooms of less
than 35 decibels, with night-time peaks not to exceed 40 decibels. However, most hospitals
in Delhi suffer din of nearly double the permissible limit. As Sumit Saxena, a resident of
Saket who got his mother admitted to AAIMS recently, pointed out, the noise starts right in
the wards with relatives and visitors of patients chatting loudly . Amid this, all the doctors
can say is that most people don't realise the health impact of noise pollution.
