3. Exodus 16:4-5 (NIV) 4
Then the LORD said to Moses, "I will rain
down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out
each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test
them and see whether they will follow my instructions. 5
On the
sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to
be twice as much as they gather on the other days."
Exodus 16:14-18 (NIV) 14
When the dew was gone, thin flakes
like frost on the ground appeared on the desert floor. 15
When
the Israelites saw it, they said to each other, "What is it?" For
they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the
bread the LORD has given you to eat. 16
This is what the LORD
has commanded: 'Each one is to gather as much as he needs.
Take an omer for each person you have in your tent.'" 17
The
Israelites did as they were told; some gathered much, some
little. 18
And when they measured it by the omer, he who
gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered
little did not have too little. Each one gathered as much as he
needed.
4. Holman Bible Dictionary
MANNA – Grain like substance, considered to be food from
heaven, which sustained the Israelites in the wilderness and
foreshadowed Christ, the true Bread from heaven.
Old Testament – The small round grains or flakes, which
appeared around the Israelites’ camp each morning with the
dew, were ground and baked into cakes or boiled (Exodus
16:13-36). Their name may have come from the question the
Israelites asked when they first saw them: “What is it ?” Some
scholars believe that the word manna is a derivative of the
Egyptian word for “menu.” Today a type of manna has been
identified with the secretions left on tamarisk bushes by
insects feeding on the sap. The Bible emphasizes that God
caused manna to appear at the right time and place to meet
His people’s needs.
New Testament Jesus assured the Jews that He, and not the
wilderness food, was the true Bread from heaven which
conferred eternal life on those who partook of it (John 6:30-
58).
5. “Sometimes when I consider
what tremendous
consequences come from little
things, I am tempted to think
there are no little things.”
Bruce Barton
6. The Obstacle – something that blocks or impedes a road,
passage, or somebody's way
Manna has a process for procurement
It must be conceived
It must be collected (some falls close)
It must be carried
The Israelites had to leave the comfort of their tents
7. The Observation – the attentive watching of somebody or
something, the act of observing a religious occasion or ritual
or of obeying a law or rule
Manna has a presentation
Six Characteristics Of Manna:
1. Small (Exodus 16:14)
2. Round (Exodus 16:14)
3. White (Exodus 16:31)
4. Sweet (Exodus 16:31)
5. Easily melted (Exodus 16:21)
6. Hard (Numbers 11:8)
8. The Opportunity – a chance, especially one that offers some
kind of advantage, a combination of favorable circumstances
or situations
The Manna has to be prepared
Numbers 11:7-9 (NIV) 7
The manna was like coriander seed and
looked like resin. 8
The people went around gathering it, and
then ground it in a handmill or crushed it in a mortar. They
cooked it in a pot or made it into cakes. And it tasted like
something made with olive oil. 9
When the dew settled on the
camp at night, the manna also came down.
9. The Obedience – the act or practice of following instructions,
complying with rules or regulations, or submitting to
somebody's authority
Manna has procedures
1. Every person who was entitled was to gather an omer (half
a gallon) daily for five days (Exodus 16:16-23).
2. The full omer was to be eaten daily—nothing being left over
for the next day (Exodus 16:19).
3. On the sixth day they were to gather two omers apiece—
one for that day and one for the Sabbath (Exodus 16:22-30).
4. Each of the two omers to be prepared on the sixth day—no
preparation on the Sabbath (Exodus 16:23-30).
10. The Opinion – the view somebody takes about an issue,
especially when it is based solely on personal judgment, a
view regarding the worth of somebody or something, an
expert assessment of something
Manna has a pattern (John 6)
1. Small – Bethlehem was a lowly city & Galilee was a city of
servitude
2. Round – Jesus has the capacity to encompass us with His
love
3. White – He is holy, righteous, possesses an unblemished
record of deliverance, healing and all-around need satisfaction
4. Sweet – He is all good, never failing, never surrendering,
and never stopping
5. Easily melted – He is touched by the feelings of troubles,
concerns, and dreams
6. Hard – He is the Rock of our Salvation, the Rock for our
weariness
11.
12. The Obstacle that limits receiving what God has for me
My manna comes through a process
The Observation of the liberties I have with God
My manna is presented to me in many different ways
The Opportunity of a lifetime
My manna must be prepared
The Obedience that is commensurate with loving God
My manna has procedures that are mandated by God
The Opinion that leads to real living
My manna is patterned after Christ
