John 1
1. In this chapter John is dealing with a basic
need
every person has…
TO KNOW GOD
2. “No one has seen God at any
time…” (Vs. 18)
If no one has seen God,
how can we knowhim?
3. Old Testament views of God
• Afraid
• Mysterious
• Distant
• Unapproachable
• Unnecessary
4. Misconceptions of God today
• “ The Man up Stairs”
• “ The Force”
• Whatever you think of him as being
A Flower, Light Bulb, Tree, Cloud
• Do not believe there is a God
5. Why does God want us to have a
correct view of Him?
To correct the
misconceptions -
so we can know Him
and relate to Him.
6. How are we to know Him?
John tells us…vs.18
No one has seen God at any time.
The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom
of the Father, He has declared him.
THROUGH JESUS
10. How do we know?
“ And the word became flesh
and dwelt among us, and we
beheld His glory, the glory as
of the only begotten of the
Father, full of grace and
truth.” (Vs. 14)
11. Why did John give Jesus
this nickname?
Because Jesus
is the declaration of
God
12. How was Jesus the WORD?
He made known the ways of God.
His statements and His life declared what
God is like—
His character, His thoughts,
His Feelings, His goals
and His requirements.
13. Pay attention
to the words and actions
of Jesus ---
they reveal God.
14. The SOURCE vs. 3
“ All things were made by Him,
and without Him
nothing was made that was made.”
17. Psalm 139:13-18
“For you formed my inward parts… I will praise
you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are your works, and that my soul
knows very well. My frame was not hidden
from you, when I was made in secret, and
skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the
earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet
unformed. And in your book they all were
written, which in continuance were fashioned,
when as yet there were none of them. How
precious are your thoughts to me, O God! How
great is the sum of them! If I should count them,
they would be more in number than the sand;
when I awake, I am still with you.”
18. There are certain unchangeable features we
were born with, over which we had no control.
Four of these are:
1. PARENTS
2. PHYSICAL APPERANCE
3. ABILITY
4. ENVIRONMENT
19. Would you want to change
any of these unchangeables?
If yes,
it affects
your relationship
with God.
21. Two facts we learn about God
early in life:
•GOD MADE ME
•GOD LOVES ME
22. If I have a problem accepting an
unchangeable, how will it affect my
relationship with God?
If God made me and Loves me
and this is what He did to me-forget
Him! I can’t trust Him.
I’m not going to commit
my life to Him.
25. We will either respond or react to life’s
situations.
If we react, we will miss God’s purpose
and end up
angry and bitter.
If we respond, we will find God’s
purpose and experience fulfillment and
joy.
27. Romans 8:31-39
“What then shall we say to these things? If God is
for us, who can be against us? … Who shall
separate us from the love of Christ? Shall
tribulation, or famine , or nakedness, or peril, or
sword? … Yea in all these things we are more
than conquerors through him who loved us. For I
am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor
angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things
present, nor things to come, nor height, nor
depth, nor anything, shall be able to separate us
from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our
Lord.”
28. Do not react to life’s situations
– respond and discover God’s best.
God made you for a purpose and
accordingly has every step
planned.
Allow Him to unfold His plan.
Trust Him for every detail.
29. The LIGHT vs. 4,5,9
“In him was life, and the life was the light of
men. And the light shines in the darkness. . .
That is the true light which gives light to every
person coming into the word.”
32. God wants us to know Him
To know His mind and heart.
To know Him so as not to react to
life’s situations, but to respond,
trusting Him.
To know Him so He can show us how
to live.
34. In receiving Him
FOLLOW HIM
Vs. 37,43
”Two disciples heard him speak, and they
followed Jesus.
The following day Jesus … found Philip and said
to him, “Follow Me.”
