ADAMSTOWN
NEWSLETTER
Adamstown has an elected seven-
member Borough Council which
plays a central role in borough gov-
ernment. Council sets policy, enacts
ordinances, adopts budgets, controls
expenditures, appoints commissions
or boards, and hires employees.
Council members are elected to four
year terms, with either 3 or 4 mem-
bers up for election every 2 years.
Borough council meets the first
Tuesday of each month (7:00 pm).
With the resignation in August of
Sam Lesher, the search was on to
fill the vacancy to
serve out the re-
maining four-year
term. Among four
applicants, one can-
didate was the unan-
imous choice—
Randy Good. Randy
previously served
on the Adamstown Borough coun-
cil for eight years from 1980-1988.
Mayor Buckwalter officiated the

How Can You Help Our Volunteer Fire Department
The first and most obvious support
for your local volunteer fire de-
partment is to volunteer yourself.
One problem facing volunteer fire
departments is dwindling manpow-
er. Members retire, move, or quit,
and nobody steps up to fill that
empty set of gear. This results in
greater risk to the communities
they serve. Response times are
longer as the need for mutual aid
companies to come in from many
miles away to assist. Less firemen
mean fewer people to do the many
tasks involved in fighting a fire.
Contact Adamstown Fire Compa-
ny and ask how you can become a
volunteer.
The next best thing you can do is
to support your local volunteer fire
department is with a donation. All
of the equipment they use costs a
great deal of money to obtain and
to maintain. These items cannot be
neglected, lives depend on all
equipment operating at peak per-
formance. The problem is, many
volunteer fire departments don't
have enough money in their budg-
ets to properly maintain their
equipment.
Although the AFC receives an
annual allocation from by the bor-
ough, they also need to rely on
donations and fund raisers to get
the money they need. Without
your donations, it may become
necessary to close its doors, or
become a paid department. Either
of these situations would cost more
money than a simple annual dona-
tion. Well, there you have it. Two
simple ways to help your local
volunteer fire department. The
choice is yours, you to do one or
both.
Without the help, the volunteers
cannot help you. For more info on
the Adamstown Volunteer Fire
Company, call 717-484-4157 or

The 4th of July 1761 marks the exact date when William Addams laid out a town site in this
valley, which was then known as Cocalico Township. “Addamsburry”, as the town was
originally named, was located on the site of a former Indian Village.
The Borough of Adamstown was incorporated as a borough by a special act of legislature
on April 2, 1850 with an approximate population of 300. Records indicate that populations
through the years have risen and fallen. In a880 the population was noted at 801; in 1900
the census showed only 597 residents; but in 1920, Adamstown was credited with 800 in-
habitants. The population in 1961 was close to 1200; the 1990 census showed 1108; and the
current census of 2000 credits Adamstown with 1201 inhabitants.

Water Line Guarantee Program Offered
from a united effort based on
strength in numbers. In this as-
pect, PRWA is offering an insur-
ance program represented by
Utilishield, Inc.
The program offers insurance on
the water line that runs from the
curb box to the inside of the
home, an area which is the sole
responsibility of the homeowner
to maintain. Homeowner’s insur-
ance will cover some of the cost,
but most policies do not provide
coverage for water line repair or
replacement. Potential repair
expenses for a broken line ser-
vice could be in upwards of
$2,000-$3,000. For $36 per year
or $3.00 per month, this service
is affordable to all homeowners.
