• Cerulean Blue

• Alizarin Crimson
• Cadmium Yellow Light
• Titanium White
• Cadmium Orange
• Ivory Black
Scrap paper, palette knife

3. Color of wave denotes depth of water and wave’s closeness to
shore.
Notice the varying shapes and colors found within the waves.

The sky and water are
basically cool in color so....
the underpainting color
should be yellow
ochre/oxide - warm.
Let dry.

TO ACHIEVE THIS COLOR…
YOU WOULD MIX IN AN ANT’S MOUTHFUL
OF CADMIUM ORANGE TO THE BLUE OF THE WATER.

With the chalk draw in
the horizon line and
vanishing point lines.
These perspective
lines will help:
•to direct the eye to a
focal point
•provide a template to
create the needed
shapes

Paint in the sky
with a midtone blue:
•CERULEAN BLUE
•ULTRAMARINE BLUE
•TITANIUM WHITE

• ULTRAMARINE BLUE
• ALIZARIN CRIMSON
• CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT (TINY AMOUNT)
• TITANIUM WHITE
Begin by painting the
entire shape of the clouds
DARK using:
MAKES GREY

13. CLOUDS
• ULTRAMARINE BLUE
• ALIZARIN CRIMSON
• CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT (TINY AMOUNT)
• TITANIUM WHITE
Gradually increase the
lightness of the
clouds:
• Leave the clouds DARK at
the bottom and around
some of the top edges.
• Use the lines to guide the
shapes and to help direct
the eye back to the focal
point.
• Create variation of color
by increasing either the
blue or red in the mixture.

Highlights are created
in:
• layers using TITANIUM
WHITE, and spreading it
with your finger.

15. OPEN SEA
Paint behind the
wave with a midtone
blue:
•CERULEAN BLUE
•ULTRAMARINE BLUE
•TITANIUM WHITE

16. MAIN WAVE SHAPE
Block in the wave
shape
and surging water
with a mid-dark blue:
•PHTHALO BLUE
•ULTRAMARINE BLUE
•TITANIUM WHITE
DISREGARD ADDING ANY
DETAILS, YET.

17. MAIN WAVE SHAPE
Set aside a third of the
wave mixture.
Create the apex or top
of the wave shape by
adding a small amount
of CADMIUM YELLOW
LIGHT to this mixture:
•PHTHALO BLUE
•ULTRAMARINE BLUE
•TITANIUM WHITE
ALSO, ADD THIS NEW COLOR TO
THE RIGHT FOREGROUND.

18. FOAM SHAPES
Use the chalk lines as
a template:
• ADD A TINY MORE WHITE TO
THE ORIGINAL MIXTURE.
• USE A ROUND BRUSH AND A
LITTLE WATER TO PAINT THE
FOAM LINES
BELOW THE WAVE.

Continue to use the
chalk lines as a
template:
•ADD A TINY MORE WHITE TO
THE MIXTURE.
• USE A ROUND BRUSH
AND THEN BLUR WITH YOUR
FINGER THE HIGHLIGHTS
ON THE FOAM.
IF YOU SEE THE COLOR YOU HAVE
CREATED IN THE WAVE, APPLY THIS
COLOR.

20. FOAM SHAPES
Continue to use the
chalk lines as a
template:
•ADD A TINY MORE WHITE TO
THE MIXTURE.
• USE A ROUND BRUSH
AND THEN BLUR WITH YOUR
FINGER THE HIGHLIGHTS
ON THE FOAM.

21. FALLING WAVE
•Using TITANIUM WHITE
paint the white foam
on top of the waves
and smudge and
spread it with your
finger.
•Bring the dark blue
mix up into the foam
to shade it.
TRY TO KEEP FINGERS CLEAN BY WIPING WITH A DAMP CLOTH.

22. SPLATTERING TIPS:
•DEMO
•SET UP PRACTICE AREA
•Mask the painting with torn
paper around the area you wish
to splatter.
•Use a flat bristle brush and
white diluted paint.
•Hold paint brush securely over
the area you wish to splatter.
Pull the palette knife upwards
thru the brush.
•Practice first before attempting.
•Use a diluted grey-blue to add
depth with additional splatters.
•Smear a few of the splatters.
