11. Baby Formula
Market
Research in
Thailand
premise.com
Challenge
A multinational food company was wanting to grow their existing market strength on
Baby Formula food products in Thailand. It needed to conduct a study to understand
sentiments and attitudes towards specific brands, prices, ingredients and user buying
behaviours. Their main business driver for Premise to provide insight on was what
would be the response of their customers if a new baby formula was introduced to the
market.
Premise Solution
Premise’s network of contributors and specifically parents in Thailand who actively
bought baby formula were targeted to conduct a study of their Baby Formula
brand buying choices. Contributors were sent to stores to report on stock
availability, brand presence, prices and share of shelf. Parents were then asked to
share their sentiments towards prices and the key differentiating buying decisions.
Customer Impact
Premise helped identify that there was a market for more ingredients-focused
products. The customer was shown that there was significant margin in price
flexibility allowing them to build a more premium product and brand that would still
be purchased by their consumers. Thus giving them the incentive to increase their
profit margins.

Challenge
A niche US CSD (Carbonated Soft Drinks) manufacturer wanted to measure the
effectiveness of its recent distribution expansion and better understand their
competitive set. Due to the relatively low distribution of the target products,
traditional market research firms were unable to meaningfully capture sales for our
customer.
Premise Solution
Traditional market research firms require a minimum level of sales in order for a
product to be included in syndicated data. However, Premise contributors can report
on products as they are discovered in market which allows us to analyze the data in
near-real time. In less than a week, our contributors reported on nearly a dozen
unique retail establishments which included channels, facings, shelf position,
assortment and pricing.
Customer Impact
Without Premise, the customer would not have had visibility into their portfolio’s
performance for months until it met certain sales thresholds in order to be included in
traditional syndicated data. This process often takes much longer for local and even
regional manufacturers versus popular national brands.

What made you decide to seek out crowdsourced retail insights? What data gaps did you have?
Rick can speak to the above image, his “non-linear P2P” map
We can channel-hop with the consumer. We’re in all those places.
Were you skeptical when you first heard about a “gig economy” data source?
Yes. We have been very traditional in our process of capturing consumer feedback. But we are always looking to try new things. The crowdsourcing approach was new to the organization and we wanted to test out the process to determine if it was the right fit for the company. We utilize the Premise platform for specific projects and we've been pleased with the service and results
