This document provides information about a 5-day training course on Managed Pressure Drilling Operations taking place from November 30 to December 4, 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The course will be led by Ian Davidson, an expert in well engineering with over 37 years of experience. The course will cover the basic principles of managed pressure drilling, how it addresses non-productive time problems, an overview of different managed pressure drilling methods, well design considerations, and equipment selection. Attendees will learn how to evaluate managed pressure drilling candidates, design managed pressure drilling programs, and evaluate project risks and economics.

MANAGED PRESSURE DRILLING OPERATIONS
30 November – 4 December 2015 | Kuala Lumpur | Malaysia
Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is a drilling tool that is increasingly being recognised by operators and
regulators as it is able to enhance safety, efficiency and lower cost. MPD aims to resolve chronic drilling
problems that contribute to non-productive time. These problems include:
Well Stability
Stuck Pipe
Lost Circulation
Well Control Incidents
When MPD is executed correctly, it is as safe as, or safer than, current conventional drilling techniques. The
objective of this 5-day course is to help you understand and apply the fundamentals of MPD, starting from
candidate assessment and selection through to implementation. The aim is to provide you with the knowledge
required to identify prospective MPD candidate wells in their operations through a rigorous candidate screening
process, evaluate the appropriate approach to most economically and safely drill the well and, if the approach
selected is MPD, to ensure that the appropriate equipment, procedures, assessment and mitigation of risks are
applied.
Course Structure
The course, which follows the structure of the Gulf Publishing Company’s textbook “Managed Pressure Drilling”,
supplemented with latest technology developments and case studies, will, amongst others, cover the following
important topics:
The basic principles of MPD – how it works
How MPD addresses NPT problems
Overview of MPD methods
Selection of the appropriate MPD method
MPD well design, including mud system and mud weight selection
MPD Equipment and equipment selection
MPD control systems
Application of screening criteria for MPD and candidate selection
Risk analysis
Project economics
What will you learn?
During the course, current MPD methods are described, highlighting advantages and disadvantages of each. By
the end of the course, you will be able to determine which MPD method is most suitable for a particular
application or well section.
In summary, you will be in a position to do the following after the course:
Screen their own candidate wells using criteria for MPD candidate selection
Apply specific design principles for selected MPD wells/methods
Determine operating parameters for safe MPD operations
Prepare a MPD based drilling program
Evaluate project risks
Evaluate project economics.
We will use case studies and worked exercises to reinforce learning.

joined Blade Energy Partners as Vice President Marketing & Training Division. Ian resigned from Blade in January 2012 to start his
own independent Training & Engineering Services company. Ian is presently engaged by major E&P companies to provide well
engineering based training, and by a major equipment supply company to support well design for test wells. He is presently a
committee member for the SPE Forum “Next Generation Well Control”.
During his varied career, he has filled several drilling operational and well engineering positions,
ranging from roughneck to rig superintendent, in land and offshore operations. He also has held
leadership positions, and has broad experience in project delivery, drilling operations, technology
development & implementation, and staff training, learning & development.
His drilling, well engineering and technology experience includes hands-on drilling, well design,
drilling operations, drilling supervision, well control supervision and training, training course
development and instruction, drilling waste management, underbalanced drilling technology, well
manufacturing and drilling automation technology. He has worked on and offshore in the
Netherlands, UK, and Malaysia in wellsite and office based supervisory positions.
At Blade Energy Partner’s Ian was responsible for developing Blade’s highly profitable training
business through aggressive marketing and focus on meeting client’s requirements. He also conducted courses in Drilling
Technology and undertook extensive project work related to well manufacturing and well control training for recognized
international companies.
He led the advance of new drilling concepts and methodologies applied to well manufacturing as manager of Shell’s Well
Manufacturing System team based in Houston. He was instrumental in the development and leadership of Shell’s approach to
well manufacturing, in particular the focus taken on automation. He is a patent holder for TH3536-Wellbore Manufacturing
Process For In Situ Heat Treatment Process.
As Shell’s underbalanced drilling implementation manager in the Middle East, Ian was recognized for outstanding performance
and received awards for project implementation successes in Oman. He initiated and led the Middle East Underbalanced Drilling
Forum that established the HSE credentials of UBD and was subsequently incorporated into an IADC Managed Pressure
Operations committee. To improve project implementation, he initiated, and co-developed with Surrey University, a course on
Project Management for Underbalanced Operations. During this assignment, he organized and co-chaired an SPE Applied
Technology Workshop for Managed Pressure Drilling amongst other SPE / IADC related committee duties.
He has extensive training experience; as an instructor, course developer, personnel manager and training business development
manager. Notable roles include manager and lead instructor at the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschapij’s “SIMWELL”, where he
was responsible for initiating, developing and implementing the industry recognized “Volumetric Stripping” well control method.
He subsequently spent 4 years as a senior well engineering instructor at Shell’s International Training Centre in the Netherlands,
where he taught intermediate and senior level courses covering a wide range of well engineering subjects leading up to Shell’s
Round 2 examinations. During this period he initiated new training methodologies and co- developed the industry recognized
computer based Drilling Operations Training simulator (marketed by Drilling Systems), which has proved a great success in
stimulating and improving the learning and development of trainees. He co-developed and narrated an award winning training
video titled “Well Under Control”.
