Yes, it’s true. Your Library has a 3D printer!
It is the MakerBot Replicator 2. It uses PLA based filament and can be found at
the Central Library in the Tech Zone on the iHelp Desk. The 3D printer can be
used during open library hours seven days a week.
The cost is 50 cents for up to 20 minutes. A one hour print would cost $1.50.

For Children
The TD Summer Reading Club is back for another year and it’s better than ever. TD Summer Reading Club is an inclusive program
that strives to engage all children in the joy of reading during the summer months while championing Canadian writers and il-
lustrators. The program helps connect families with books and build confidence in reading through the delivery of free incentives
and fun, accessible library activities.
This year the theme is Eureka! It encourages everyone to get messy, imagine, and create! Upon
completion of the week four report, registered members will be recognized with a Library
Champion Lawn Sign. Show your friends, neighbours and the community just how awesome
you are! Accessible options are available for kids who do not read print.
Preschool (birth to 4 years)
Families who register will receive a free preschool program package which includes early literacy activities that are fun to do together.
Families are encouraged to return once a week, whenever it is convenient and talk to Library staff about what they have
been reading and doing. Each week when they return to the library they will be entered in a prize draw and receive a special
collectible sticker. Children who attend 6 weeks out of the total 9 weeks in the summer will be entered in the Grand Prize draw.
Families are encouraged to attend Eureka! themed programs offered throughout the summer.
School Age (4 to 12 years)
During the school year, kids often have to study and read very specific books. The summertime, however, is a time for freedom,
exploration and discovery. So this year, the TD Summer Reading Club’s theme is Eureka! It encourages and empowers kids to get
messy, let their imaginations loose and create! Children who register will receive a free school age program package, which
includes a free Durham Ride to Read Transit Pass.
Children are encouraged to read just 15 minutes a day and return once a week, whenever it is convenient for their family, to talk
to Library staff about what they have been reading. Each week when they return to the Library, they will be entered in a prize
draw and receive a special collectible sticker. Children who attend six weeks out of the total nine weeks in the summer will be
entered in the Grand Prize draw.
What counts as reading? Children can read independently, read to someone else or have someone read to them. Books,
magazines, comics, newspapers and audiobooks are acceptable.
Registration for the TD Summer Reading Club begins Saturday, June 21 and must be done in person.
Registration for individual summer programs begins Monday, June 23. Online registration can be
found on the Library webpage at www.picnet.org.

Eureka! Invention Contest
(12 years and under)
Use your imagination and think of an invention that would make life easier, safer or more fun. What
would it look like? What would it do?
Pick up a copy of the Invention Contest sheet at any library branch.
Complete details as well as a copy of the sheet will be available at www.picnet.org/kids starting
June 23. Submit your Invention Contest sheet anytime during the summer. All entries must be
submitted by August 25.
Eureka! Read Off Your Fees! (12 years and under)
Do you have overdue fees on your card? Children can sign in to our ‘Reading Room’ and read silently
for a minimum of 15 minutes to have up to $5 waived off their Library fees, or if they read for 30 minutes
they will have up to $10 waived. Children not yet able to read can have adults accompany them and
read quietly together. Children must bring in their Eureka! notebook as proof of being enrolled in the TD
Summer Reading Club. Fees can only be waived from children’s cards. *Please note this is only for
fees not lost items.

Creating an object with our own hands produces a great deal of satisfaction. Come and explore the
wonderful world of carving. There will be demonstrations of carving wood and then each participant
will become a sculpting artist by carving a bar of soap. All materials will be supplied. Take one bar of
soap and one plastic knife and let’s get started. Registration is required.

(9 to 12 years)
Do you have an interest in how electronics and circuits work? Want to come try building your own
electronic device? Using snap together electronic circuits called littleBits, experiment and try to
complete design challenges. Learn how simple
circuits work and then create your own machine.
All materials will be provided for use in the program.

Eureka! Be a Weaving Wizard (9 to 12 years)
In the pioneer days, clothing and home furnishings were not bought at the store! Learn about the
travelling weavers, the vocabulary of weaving and fibers and fabrics. Staff from Pickering Museum
Village will lead children in this handicraft. Each child will use a lap loom and scraps of fabric to
weave a small “Mug Rug” to take home. Registration is required.

Join authors Jim Chapel and Carol Porter to investigate nature using the five senses.
Children will have the opportunity to explore natural objects using their five senses
separately and together. They will engage in activities about living things and enjoy making

Erick is an award winning musician, singer/songwriter and author who has released seven CDs and
three children’s books. He has been entertaining children at schools, libraries, fairs, and community
events throughout Ontario and Eastern Canada for over 20 years with his fun-filled, high energy and
interactive musical show. With a mixture of original and traditional songs, he captivates young audiences
wherever he goes.
Erick’s message is one that celebrates the whimsical
imagination and unfettered expression of our youngsters.

skills and tool safety along with instilling a sense of pride

any building toy (Lego, Megablocks, K’nex, etc) Drop off your creation at the Central Library
Auditorium on Friday, August 22 between 1:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
On Saturday, August 23, bring the family to the Builders’ Showcase anytime between 1:00
pm and 3:00 pm. All creations must be picked up by 4:00 pm on Saturday, August 23.
Everyone who participates will receive a Eureka! builder certificate, a small reward and be entered in
a prize draw for a $50 gift card for Mastermind Toys. The draw will be held at 3:00 pm. Participants

Writer’s Group (ages 16-29)
This is an informal, self-run group for those of you who love writing stories, poems, songs, journals,
essays, comics, fan-fiction, scripts, blogs, reviews, articles and much more.
This group will encourage you to keep writing and refine your craft.
Refreshments will be served. At each meeting members will have the opportunity to
share and critique each other’s writing in a positive and safe environment.
The writer’s group will meet every third Tuesday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm starting Tuesday,
June 17 in the Central Library Boardroom. Registration is required.

Check out the popular technology classes in the Library Learning Lab. All classes take place at the

Social Media Clinic
Having troubles getting your privacy setting correct in Facebook? Still confused between hashtags,
mentions and direct messages in Twitter? Can’t make our Pinterest class on August 6th? Drop into the
Learning Lab for an informal session where we can help answer your social media sharing questions.
Photography Basics
Don’t know the difference between a dSLR and a compact point-and-shoot camera? Don’t
know which one to buy? This workshop will help you understand the basics of modern
digital cameras. Also learn about the camera aperture, shutter, ISO, white balance,
storage formats and more. If you have a digital camera, please feel free to bring it along.
Photography Using Your Smartphone’s Camera
The “best camera” you own is the one in your pocket and most people today have smartphones.
Learn about basic settings and techniques with your Android and iPhone/iPod touch camera.
We will also explore various camera and photo apps, like Instagram. A smartphone and access
to your app store will be required for this program.

Pinning With Pinterest
One of the most exciting social networking sites to explode on the scene, Pinterest, lets you collect
and share websites, images, products and content from around the web. Planning a wedding, looking
for bbq ideas or where to go away on vacation? Pinterest is the social sharing site for you. A valid
email address is required prior to registration.
Audio Recording
Learn the basics of recording audio using the freely available Audacity software. Understand the
differences between a dynamic and condenser microphone, how to plug-in and use a microphone,
arming a track for recording, adjusting volume levels, avoiding noise and clipping, using effects and
more. Microphone will be provided.
Basic Blogging with Wordpress
Do you have something to say? Do you have things to share? You don’t need to spend a lot to get
your message out with a blog. We will be setting up a hosted blog using Wordpress.com A valid email
address and basic computer knowledge is required prior to registration.
Filmmaking - Composition and Shooting
Before going into the “editing room,” you’ll need some video footage. This workshop will teach you
the basics of composing and shooting digital video. Learn about the different techniques in recording
smooth video such as fluid head tripods and steadicams, framing your shots, the rule of thirds and
more. Workshop will focus on shooting for interviews and corporate videos.
LEARNINGLAB
3D Modelling Using Blender
Learn the fundamentals of 3D Modelling using Blender, a free and open source 3D modelling
and animation software. Learn all about basic 3D concepts such as meshes, vertices, edges and
faces. Workshop will also focus on the Blender user interface and you will learn how to design a
very basic 3D model.
Explore the Googleverse
Chrome. Google Apps. Chromebooks. Google Translate. Google is so much more than a search
engine these days. Learn all that Google has to offer. A valid Gmail/Google account is needed for
this program.

The Pickering Public Library has won a TD Summer Reading Club Library Award for 2013. The TD
Summer Reading Club Library Award recognizes the most innovative and effective TD Summer
Reading Club programs in local public libraries across Canada. Given the creativity and quality of
programs, the excellence of collections, and the dedication of staff, Pickering Public Library has been
recognized as the second best TD Summer Reading Club in the country. The Library’s children’s
services librarian Sarah West accepted the award at the Canada Library Association national conference
in Victoria BC, May 29-31st. The library will be awarded $2,500 to be invested in children’s programming.
TD Summer Reading Club is an inclusive program that strives to engage all children in the joy of reading
during the summer months while championing Canadian writers and illustrators. The program helps
connect families with books and build confidence in reading through the delivery of free incentives and
fun, accessible library activities. All summer long across Canada, libraries aim to inspire a sense of
adventure and wonder, nurture children’s imaginations and celebrate their accomplishments.
