2. Bright Eyes at the bottom of everything. -I like the strong narrative in this video and it's informal presentation, and how that is controversial to what actually happens as are many parts of the video, Giving a positive happy example of a horrible event. They are about to die so they do the thing that will make them the happiest they can be, and they enjoy all their final acts. -Again in keeping with the idea that all the characters in the video are about to die i love how this changes all the realationships between the people on the plane, The old man becomes paternal and friendly to comfort the innocent girl, and the young boy kisses the older woman next to him, - I like the surreal twist, with the animated clouds throwing around planes like it's a game until they pile up, helping to keep the mood positive by making it over the top unrealistic to detach the audience from the sad theme of the song. -I like how the editing allows you to watch several relationships to develop over a short space of time as they pour their last drinks or hug goodbye, just showing different things people would do with their last seconds if they had to choose then. Also how several characters just listen to the music and give the appearance of singing them to help draw focus back to the music.
3. Prodigy -Hot ride, -I like the introduction, the panning shot of feet running matches the music well, and a kid smashing a teddy on the floor is fairly tame compared to the rest of the video which, like the music puts an emphasis on the chaos building and the children band together. -I like the contrast between fast shots and slow motion shots all to fast music, -I enjoy how excited the children are, so young they won't understand the repercussions of their actions, just look happy like playing, not like criminals, while at the same time, there is organisation within the group so they do know what they are doing -Towards the end a slight white noise comes over the music, I like how this part of the video is transitional, leading into the turn towards the authorities winning, a guard is woken up, the hostage gets free and calls in police, as the music comes back in louder without static in the chorus the shift reverses slightly as the children take out the guards with a trap. and how the end of the video is smoke filling the screen as the police come in, fading out of the chaos in time with the music. -two camera shots that particularly stand out to me are the one on the car door after the crash and one following the first police officer to storm in wearing a gasmask. I like these how these shots move only when something in shot moves and how they draw attention just slightly away from the action (the car door shutting again, the policeman stopping to look around a corner while his team push on in another direction)
4. Thrice-Image of the invisible -This video strongly represents the genre of progressive rock, with a very rebellious theme it shows the band fighting a corrupted government, this mood is set well with a very dark colour pallet references to Morse code and the first scene of a child playing piano all add to set a scene, there are a lot of intertextual references to the second world war throughout, such as the child hiding in the piano, an intertextual reference to 'Schindlers List' (1993) however there are also dystopian themes to fit to the 'progressive' side of the genre. -When the song starts it shows the lead singer on stage chanting to an audience of other rebels the lyrics of the song which match closely to the video. -I like the strong representation of good and evil, the authorities dressed all black, without faces just night vision masks (giving them the gaze) kidnapping children to keep them from expressing themselves and the band rescuing the children. -I like the narrative has a dramatic moment when the band of rebels are trapped and taken prisoner. the music reflects this becoming dramatic when the authorities capture then, and becoming weaker while being dragged into prison, then the "canticle" from the start of the song comes back quieter and getting louder representing the growing will and strength of the rebels as one member of the band frees everyone else from the shadows allowing them to finish there mission. -I like the camera shot while the lead singer is being dragged along as he reaches out to a companion in a cage, and the shot through bars of him becoming louder and more aggressive before breaking out. -Also I like the change of colour in the final scene when the sun shines through creating a more colourful image than before seen in the video, again representing the good triumph over evil.
5. Unkle-Burn My Shadow -This video has little relationship between the vauge lyrics and the narrative, with the spoken narrative in the video sometimes being louder than the lyrics, Although this i think makes the video very stylistic and I like a lot of the editing and ideas behind it -The Mans reactions are very good, when he first sees his chest he thinks it a joke, but the countdown is nearly over so he gradually starts to panic, unable to stay cohearant and with so little times he gives up on ringing the emergency services, and when he realises he's completely alone he starts to think about what he can do. -I like the way the music matches the video when the phone rings, he franticly looks for it as the music becomes suddenly frantic aswell, the editing emphasises this by chaning the angle a lot and there being a lot of movment on screen until he find the phone a second too late, the music suddenly becomes slow again as the camera loosely hangs on a close up of his face as he slowly closes his eyes, giving up hope. -I also like a lot fo the editing at the end, slow pan as he walks to a balcony holding valued possesions dropping them- representing how meaningless it all is now, He shuts his eyes as the count down reaches zero, as the editing cuts to his toast from earlier popping out of the toaster before cutting back to him exploding. I like how this misleads the audience for a second you think it's all a joke, and when it becomes apperent it isn't the effect of the explosion is very poorly done to keep the mood light hearted.
6. A Perfect Circle-Counting bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums -This video is animated, i think that creates a good effect, the cartoon mood contradicts the serious political issue of the video and allows for a very literal take of the lyrics, -The song itself has the same lyrics as another song by the same band however the music is very different, much more emphasis on drums to link to "the war drums" and a lot of overlaid sound to give a processed feel to the music, complimented by the video depicting George Bush entering children's lives and processing their influences. -It uses very effective editing with static on the screen-connoting an interrupted transmission, and a strong emphasis on the media brainwashing the American public. -I like how it portrays George Bush as several different trustworthy figures, a mother, an ice cream man, a teacher, until the end when his plan comes together and he is shown as Julius Ceaser. Bush in various different ways gives TVs to the children, which as they watch turns them literally into sheep a reference to the song and connoting following without thinking, showing bombs being dropped in the background while the children watch television obliviously. It also has representations of what Bush is giving the children being literally excrement, and intertextual reference to Nazi Germany in the school scene as he destroys the literature with his television remote. -I like the strong images that introduce the video with the famous 'Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament' pressure group's symbol being slowly broken away by the "war drums" and then playing on a anti war slogan of blood for oil, showing oil pumps getting blood out of the ground and blood eventually taking over the entire screen. -The sheep are lead off a cliff into a fire by Bush, some, in a way that matches a change in the music, shake out of the trance and try to escape but are branded and killed for example or to help strengthen the media (one sheep becoming a celebrities coat) -I like the strong relationship between the lyrics and video, the lyrics being very much a portrayal of what the band believe is being told to the public by the government, telling them not to think for themselves, to stay sedated, and I love the controversy in saying "safe from pain, and truth and choice" whereas most people would want to know the latter 2. -The brainwashing connotations increase with the repetition in the music which is also a strong way the band emphasise their point. giving a very hypnotic feel to the video especially with the final shot of Bush hypnotising the audience with his eyes.
