- KEY MESSAGE: VMware has a vision that now embraces the Spring Community VMware has been on a mission. For the last couple of years we have been marching towards a vision of any cloud for any application on any device, with intrinsic security. Cloud-native applications are part of that vision, and, as James just described, those cloud-native applications need cloud-native infrastructure and And we recognized that to make that vision a reality, we needed to become experts in cloud-native applications and application infrastructure. We needed to be right here with all of you: The Spring Community.

- KEY MESSAGE: VMware announced Tanzu for cloud-native applications At VMworld we unveiled a new initiative called Tanzu Tanzu wraps up a lot of capabilities for cloud-native applications. It’s a platform for the construction, delivery, operation, and maintenance of modern applications. Tanzu bridges that developer experience with an enterprise-grade operating model and systems.
- James Watters Kubernetes is open source … just like Spring is open source. When people think about open source, VMware might not be the first company that comes to mind … Pat Gelsinger: Well, it’s not about companies it’s about contributions, and that’s where we’re striving to make an impact. Many people are surprised to learn that VMware is now the #2 overall contributor to the Kubernetes project. Over the past year we have: Established VMware as a top contributor to the open source Kubernetes project Acquired Heptio for deep K8S expertise and leadership – you Joe & Craig!! Acquired Bitnami, leader in packaging OpenSrc & deploying applications on Kubernetes Announced intent to acquire Pivotal as a leading cloud native platform moving to K8S James Watters: Since you brought it up, let’s address the elephant in the room. I know you can’t say much about the Pivotal acquisition until it closes, but can you share the motivation to acquire Pivotal? Pat Gelsinger: Full circle. We believe that enterprises that want to transform the way they build applications need to bring operators and developers together. VMware has incredible trust with operators. Pivotal has great reach and reputation with developers. We will have a unified portfolio and customer experience and the ability to invest even more in critical technologies like Spring! We’ve collaborated with Pivotal for years on VMware PKS. PAS is being engineered to run on Kubernetes, bringing us into even closer alignment.
