The Honorable Georgi B. Vlaskin, a career foreign-service officer,
was Deputy Director of the Department of North America at the Russian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs before his appointment to Seattle. Vlaskin’s
diplomatic career also has included service in Pakistan, Spain and Austria.
Since 1982, Vlaskin has been active in formulating and implementing
his nation’s policy toward the U.S.A. As part of his specialty in bilateral
Russian-American relations, he is interested in cooperation in the spheres
of science and technology; culture; sports; tourism; exchange programs
and contacts between citizens; and consular relations.
Vlaskin was born in 1951 in Sverdlosk, Russia’s major industrial cen-
ter in the Ural Mountains. He graduated from the elite Moscow Institute for
International Relations in 1973 and later completed additional professional
training at the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Diplomatic Academy. Besides his
mother tongue, Vlaskin speaks English, French, German, Italian, Spanish
and Hindi.
Awarded a brown belt from the Gojou-Ryiu school of karate, Vlaskin’s
