What is a USB Flash Drive?
A USB flash drive—also known as pen drive, thumb drive, or memory stick—is a
portable storage device that uses flash memory. Its capacity capability reached 512GB
until 2013 when a 1 terabyte USB flash drive was introduced at the Consumer
Electronics Tradeshow.
Some manufactures can customize flash drives with logos and text. Most are
compatible with all operating systems. When a USB flash drive is plugged into a
computer it is automatically recognized as a removable drive and the computer will
usually alert the end user. Flash drives have completely replaced floppy discs and are
rapidly replacing CDs and DVDs particularly because of their faster speeds and
memory storage capability. Flash memory does not require batteries or external
power supplies.
2.0 vs 3.0
The most common USB flash drives are 2.0, also known as a Hi-Speed USBs. They were
developed by The USB Promoter Group led by Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Lucent,
Microsoft, NEC and Philips. 2.0 speeds range from 12 Mbps to 480 Mbps. 3.0 USB flash
drives are the latest version and are known as Super High-Speed USBs. The maximum
speed is 5 Gbps (gigabytes per second), however a 3.0 port is required to obtain that
speed; otherwise its speed will be compatible with that of a 2.0 flash drive.
Lifespans can vary. Most suggest that the lifespan of a reliable USB drive is 10 years;
however the lifespan is partially determined by the number of write cycles on a flash
drive and more importantly the integrity of the device’s silicone chip. All flash memory
chips are cut from a larger silicon chip known as the master. Chips cut from the center
prove to be the strongest. The further from the middle the less reliable. This is where
Tiers come into play.
Tier 1 memory
Tier 1 drives are cut from the highest quality memory chips and are the most
dependable among USB flash drives. They have the lowest failure rate and are usually
backed by a lifetime warranty. You can distinguish Tier one memory by looking for a
serial number on each USB flash drive.
Tier 2 memory
Tier 2 chips are still quite dependable but their failure rate is higher than Tier 1
memory. Tier 2 memory may or may not come with a warranty.
Tier 3 memory
Tier 3 memory chips have high failure rates. These flash drives are made with the end
cuts of the silicon wafer. They do not come with a warranty and can be found at very
low prices.
USB Flash drives as a promotional tool
The purpose of any promotional or marketing tool is to grasp and retain the attention
of your prospects and in most competitive markets, your current clients. You can do
that with a unique item such as Custom USB Flash Drives that will help your company
stand out for originality by giving away a promotional item that has value and that
most people will find useful. Premier Promo Now has a wide variety of custom flash
drives and where you are sure to receive Tier 1 memory at a competitive price.
