3. First Place was bagged by a Malaysian Architect, Eleena Jamil, while second and third places were both Filipino Architects, Bronne Dytoc (second Place) and Nicolo del Castillo (third place). Honorable Mention were Suzette Stoler from USA, Joe Villanti, also from USA, John Patrick Anthony Buensalido from the Philippines, and Fuyuki Makino from Japan. Other entries came in from countries such as Greece, Italy and Portugal. The winning entry made by Eleena Jamil attained the spot after having extensively and ingeniously used the local and abundant Bamboo as the main material integrated to her school’s structure and in effect allowing a system that can withstand typhoons as well as rough monsoon winds.

4. The design at the same time maintained a simple and natural design that is easily assembled, replaced, dismantled and reused over time. The structure is reinforced with concrete for a durable foundation, roof made of metal decking and rock wool insulation, plastered walls and treated bamboo screens, and ceiling made of metal cladding with insulation- all these elements makes sure a comfortable atmosphere during hot tropical days but absolute protection during monsoon months. The judges of the event- a group of prominent architect and engineers flew in to proactively participate in such a meaningful event. Foreign judges included Ar. Rui Miguel R. Leao of Macau Institute of Architects, Ar.Rita Soh of Singapore Institute of Architects, while local judges who also came in included Ar. Amado de Jesus, Jr. of Philippines, Green Architecture Movement, Ar. Nathaniel Mendoza of Department of Education, Ar. Emmanuel Cuntapay of DPWH Proj. Director for Special Buildings and Engr. Raul Manikan the Exec. Director of ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation. This group was led by Ar. Yoland D. Reyes, FUAP, Hon. AIA, APEC Architect.

5. The Millennium School Design Competition is part of the Be Better Build Better (4B) Campaign and aimed to solicit the best architecture-for-humanity designs from all over the world. Architects were brought together in a collective effort to try to find solutions to the problems of school buildings in the developing world, and in particular those that are constantly faced by natural disasters like typhoons, flash floods and earthquakes. The Millennium School Design Competition brought groundbreaking solution to get the design for public schools to adapt to the growing calamities affecting the regions. The outcome- is a sustainable grass root resolution for our schools to be built with the need of localized construction- creating new jobs to meet the materials needed by local labor.

6. A formal awarding ceremony was held at RENAISANCE Hotel, Makati City, last June 16,2008. A prototype of the winning entry will be built in Nato Sagnay, Camarines Sur. Awarding was subsequently done in Malacañang with Her Excellency President Gloria Macpaga-Arroyo giving the awards. Ground breaking will be on May 6,2009. The project is made possible with the help of ABS CBN Bayan Foundation, Holcim Philippines, PETRON Foundation, DHL Express Philippines, Jaycees, Rotary Makati-Dasmarinas, Rotary 3830, Innerwheel, Philippine Green Building Council and Punongbayan and Araullo, National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC), Department of Education and Department of Public Works and Highways, My Shelter Foundation and United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) MFI Foundation Inc. and Private Sector Disaster Management Network (PSDMN).
