2. Introduction
Technology is very common in the classroom today. Not only does
technology assist students with learning new material, it also assists
students whose native language is not English. This presentation will
include three classroom scenarios, in which the tools and
recommendations could be used to support English language learners.
The Technology will:
• Aide in demonstrating a concept, skill, or strategy
• Provide feedback for student development
• Help students build their vocabulary
3. Technology Used For Vocabulary
Technology:
Adapted Mind http://www.adaptedmind.com/reading.php
Scenario:
Students in a 6th grade English class are given a list of vocabulary words and are
instructed to write complete sentences using each word. This class has ELL
students who are required to complete the assignment as well.
Recommendation:
Adapted Mind is a website that students can use to help students learn
vocabulary, work on pronunciation, as well as learn definitions. ELL students are
able to use this site to assist with learning new words and using the words
learned when speaking.
4. Technology to Aide in demonstrating a
concept, skill, or strategy
Technology:
English Media Lab- englishmedialab.com
Scenario:
English Language Learners are having difficulties writing vocabulary words,
comprehending the definitions, and applying the words when writing their
sentences.
Recommendation:
This website has several ESL exercises that can assist students with interactive
online quizzes to assist with grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary skills.
Students can practice what they are learning in class and use this site to practice
at home as well. Teachers can view quizzes that students take and use the
outcome to assist in feedback to the students.
5. Technology Used to Provide feedback for
student development
Technology:
Audacity- https://sourceforge.net/projects/audacity/
free, easy-to-use, multi-track audio editor and recorder. The interface is translated into many
languages.
Scenario:
Students in the same 6th grade English class has completed writing their sentences. The students turn
their sentences in for grading.
Recommendations:
Many students struggle with reading the English language but can understand when being spoken to.
Audacity is a great technology that will allow the teacher to give feedback that can be recorded. The
students will be able to listen repeatedly to the feedback the teacher has provided to make accurate
corrections if needed. Teachers are also able to use this technology to speak vocabulary words that are
being taught. This gives students the opportunity to listen and relisten for pronunciation and
comprehension.
6. Conclusion
Scenarios included in this presentation included technology that can
assist students when learning vocabulary, assisting students with
comprehension, and effective teacher/student feedback. These are on a
few pieces of technology of many that can be incorporated in the
classroom and in lesson plans for teachers.
