One day in 1961, Lorenz was working in his office at MIT, entering data
into a newfangled computer program designed to simulate weather
patterns. The simulation was a repeat of one he'd run already, but this
time he rounded off one of his 12 variables from .506127 to .506.
Then he left his office to grab some coffee while the computer
crunched the numbers. When he came back, though, it was clear that
something was very, very wrong. That tiny change in his data led to a
drastic transformation, completely changing two months of simulated
weather. Instead of small changes leading to other small changes,
Lorenz realized that small changes could have huge consequences.
He published his findings in 1963, and the idea came to be known as
"sensitive dependence on initial conditions" in scientific circles.
What is this phenomenon commonly known as?

The crackling ________ lava that erupts from Ol Doinyo Lengai runs
about 510°C (950°F) — well below the melting point of most lava
(1,000°C/1,832°F), but still a bit warmer than a comfortable jacuzzi.
Still, it's cool enough that it's actually possible to fall in and survive.
Ol Doinyo Lengai's one-of-a-kind lava forms thanks to its chemical
makeup. Unlike the basalt that forms the lava of most volcanoes, the
magma- rocks of Ol Doinyo Lengai are carbonatite, made up of
calcium, sodium, and dissolved carbon dioxide.
Carbonatite has a much lower melting point than basalt, which is
also why the lava never heats up enough to gain a reddish glow
(except one that's faintly visible at night). Otherwise, the lava stays a
____________ color until it cools and hardens, at which point it turns
white.
