book about the history of curry in the late 1990s. A few years later, while on
holiday with her family, she came across a painting of him in Osborne House.
Basu was immediately struck by the fact that X — whom she thought was a
servant — had been painted “beautifully, in red and gold,” with a book in his
hand. Commenting on the unusual relationship between X and Y Basu says,
“He filled the void in her life after her husband’s death and would often sign
off notes to X, her Urdu teacher, with “dearest mother” or “your loving
mother.” The relationship between X and Y was deemed controversial and
after Y’s death all the evidence including letters between them was destroyed
by her family. They evicted X and deported him back to India

in the backstreets of his home town with a tennis ball. The delivery itself
wasn’t too much of a mystery when he played against the Australians; what
was a mystery was the term used by Channel 9 in labelling it. Channel 9
commentator Mark Taylor acknowledged the etymology of the term. “I was
talking to a few journalists, and they told me how the _________ name came
about from a word in <the cricketer's> native tongue,” Taylor said.
Unfortunately, the new (corrupted) name is itself the name of a
popularnon-sporting activity. Which cricketer? What is the corrupted name?
