9. Those involved said
Having a younger voice for the day was refreshing and
fun. Our teen found wonderful items in our Collection
and around the site to interest our social media
audience.
What was really great was the fact that our teen
connected with other tweeting teens at other
participating UK museums and a very lively
conversation about their experiences took place.

Who are Kids in Museums?
Kids in Museums are a charity set up to support museums, galleries, archives and heritage sites to welcome more families, children and young people.
SLIDE 2
The charity does this by running a range of projects and offering a host of digital resources to guide professionals in the sector.
As the Project Manager my role is to support organisations to successfully deliver these projects.
The project I’m going to talk about today is Teen Twitter Takeover.
SLIDE 3
What is Teen Twitter Takeover? It began with an enthusiastic young person who took over a museums twitter feed for the day. They said:
READ QUOTE
This idea developed into a new project where museums across the UK hand their Twitter accounts over to young people on a set day in August.
In 2017, over 300 young people took part across the UK, including some international museums.
Hundreds of tweets were shared and 321,000 tweeters saw tweets using #takeoverday
SLIDE 4
How did it work for some organisations?
These images are from Wrexham County Borough Museum. This group was part of their young volunteers group but some museums invite in young people who might not have visited the space before, giving them exclusive access to the collection.
Our end of project evaluation showed 52% of participants were working with the museum for the first time; this figure demonstrates that museums are using TTT flexibly, both as a tool to engage new audiences and as a focus for those who are already engaged
Online the young people share digital heritage and their experiences with often new audiences.
Teen Twitter Takeover increases access, showcases innovative ideas used by young people.
Some of those innovative ideas can be seen here (point at pics and explain what’s happening)
Using emojis
Finding objects by asking the public to challenge them
Replicating the layout of art work
Also, young people might have been given special access to the stores, collections that aren’t on general display or even taken on a hard hat tour around a space that’s being built.
This was all decided by the teams and that’s why this created such an innovative range of online interactions.

What is the impact of this work?
Here are some tweets from the Mary Rose and quote from the member of staff leading the project.
Mary Rose Museum also reported:
- They gained 15 new followers on the day
- It raised the profile of their work with young people and their contribution amongst their staff and volunteers (as you can see from the twitter interaction from James, Paul and Simon who are all MR staff)
- There was interaction with other UK museums doing Takeover Day and retweets came from far afield including Crete and Japan
- It created great CV material for students and promotion of the Mary Rose work experience programme.

Support came from the two handles at Kids in Museums. The impressions for the two accounts for the day were:
@kidsinmuseums: 121,078
@takeovermuseums: 56,100
We even invited a young person to take over the account for two hours as well and it went really well with lots of interaction.
You can see the impact it had on our retweets, likes and replies from the images.
Other things that we found out from the evaluation of the project were:
The hashtag trended
Over 70 organisations handed over their feeds
2-5 YP, seems to be the preference for TTT museums, likely due to the nature of using social media and wanting to control the volume of tweets
16-18 was the most popular age group to work with. This was followed by the 13-15 age range, then by the 19-21 age range
From the evaluation these results showed what the museums thought was the most beneficial thing about the day and they ticked all that applied.
SLIDE 9
We have listened to the feedback and voice of the visitor and those working in the sector and we have decided to run TTT again

What next – how others can get involved?
Teen Twitter Takeover will be in its fifth year this August and each year we are reaching more young people.
If you’d like to get involved:
1. Save the date
2. Get in touch and we will make sure you get the support offered by the Kids in Museums team
3. Register the event – closer to the date of Takeover we will invite those wanting to take part to register their event. This helps us anticipate who will be online and we can make sure our team (or young person) gets in touch on the day to say ‘hi’ to your young people online.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask me today or get in touch with the Takeover Day team.
