1. Essay 1 / Exploratory Essay
Intermediate Composition
Directions: Write an essay of approximately 2-3 pages (double-spaced; 600-750 words) on one
of the following topics below. You must refer to material discussed in the homework readings
from Chapter 14 of Connect Writing 2.0.
1. Write a narrative/exploratory essay. Describe a situation in which you allowed your emotions
to work against you in school. What happened? How would you do it differently?
Purpose: To tell a story about a personal experience; to reflect on that story.
2. Write a narrative/exploratory essay. Do you view mistakes as opportunities to learn? If so,
give an example of a mistake you made that turned out to be a helpful, significant learning
experience. (It does not have to be related to school.) If you have never viewed mistakes as
opportunities to learn, how might it change your life if you begin viewing them that way?
Purpose: To tell a story about a personal experience; to reflect on that story.
3. Write a explanatory/exploratory essay. How do you prefer to learn? In other words, does one
of the six types of learning strengths in the module describe the way you prefer to learn? More
than one? Have you always had that preference?
Purpose: To reflect on the way you learn; to provide brief personal examples/anecdotes.
