Counselor’s Message
Believe it or not, it is already time to begin to think about high school enrollment
for our 8th grade students who will be freshman next year. The Harrison freshman
counselors will visit McGary during their lunch period on November 5th to discuss
the upcoming enrollment for freshman year. They will return on November 18th for
the actual enrollment. Between now and then, we will have lunchtime visits from
several other Evansville schools that are options for our 8th grade students as well,
such as Early College, New Tech, Sheppard Law Academy and the medical
Professions Academy.
Also, the EVSC Early College will be hosting an informational open house for
current 8th grade students on Monday, October 14th at Ivy Tech in room 107 from
5:30p.m.to 7 p.m. Early College is a program that allows high school students to
earn a high school diploma and an Associate’s degree or up to sixty hours toward a
Bachelor’s degree. Early College is in partnership with Ivy Tech, University of
Evansville, and SICTC. For more information or an application please visit:

Last, it is a privilege to introduce our student of the month, Broderick Atchley.
Broderick is an 8th grader at McGary and is an enormous help in the PBIS store.
Broderick helps Mr. Ferguson deliver purchases made by the student body and is
always full of ideas on how we can continue to improve the store. Broderick is
always eager to help whenever he is asked and is a pleasure to have in class.

Dress Code Reminder
As we enter the month of October and cooler temperatures are upon us, we
would like to address some frequently asked questions about the school dress code.
The Dress for Success policy at McGary states that acceptable cool weather items
that are permitted are a hoodless sweater (must be of knit material) with the
students’ solid polo worn underneath or a long sleeved solid color polo. Each student
will be provided with an approved McGary logo sweatshirt that will be acceptable as
well. This will be the only sweatshirt that the students will be allowed to
wear. The staff at McGary has been very diligent in enforcing that the students
have their polo shirt tucked in at all times and that a belt is worn daily by all
students as well. Please support our efforts in helping your student
“Dress for Success.”

McGary to Offer Strengthening Families Program
McGary has begun our Strengthening Families program, but there is still time to sign up!! We meet on
Thursdays once a week for seven weeks with the remaining dates being October 17th, October 24th, November 7th,
November 14th, and November 21st. This program is designed for any family that has a desire to increase desired
behaviors by using positive attention, communication, and problem-solving ideas. Children will learn about
communication, understanding their feelings, and resisting peer pressure. A family dinner and childcare are
provided free at each weekly session, transportation to and from McGary for those who may need it, and a door
prize will be given away at each session as well. Call Mrs. Schneider for more details at 476-3035.
Boo at the Zoo
Mesker Park Zoo will host their annual Halloween festivities, Boo at the Zoo, October 18th through October
20th and October 25th through October 27th from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., located at 1545 Mesker Park Drive. This event
is great fun for the entire family. There will be treat stations, games, crafts, and more for everyone to enjoy at this
“Spooktacular” event.
Harvest Festival and Hayrides
Experience the changing seasons at Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve located at 551 North Boeke Road on
October 26th from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. all while enjoying the thrills and traditions of autumn at this family oriented
event. There will be horse-drawn hayrides, guided night hikes, live animal encounters, star searching, children’s
activities, and much, much more. Cost of admission is $6 per person, $20 per family unit (maximum of 5 people per

Angel Mounds Corn Maze
Angel Mounds, located at 8215 Pollack Avenue, will host a corn maze beginning October 1st through October
31st. Come and visit every Tuesday through Sunday in October from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. to experience one of the
area’s newest fall attractions. Full of twists and turns that create an ancient spider design, the maze is a delight
for all ages. Navigate through the maze and collect stamps from the guards to enter for a special prize. Extended
hours every Friday and Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. feature flash light trick or treating. This is a BYOF (bring
your own flashlight) event; or make a $5 returnable deposit to use one of ours. Those who make it all the way
through the maze, collecting each piece of candy, will receive a free s’more to cook on an open fire and the chance to
enter a prize drawing. Concessions will be available for purchase. This cost is $3 per person. Please call 812-853-

Caps for a Cause
McGary is now the proud owner of a new bench in our courtyard made from all of the recycled caps that were
donated by our McGary families and staff. The caps were sent to the Green Tree Plastics company in Evansville
and by the miracle of recycling, was turned into a brand new park bench for students and staff to enjoy for years
to come. We will continue to collect any and all plastic lids or caps you would like to donate throughout the school
year as our next project will be a new picnic table for everyone to enjoy!. If you would like to see the new bench
that you helped create just stop by the school office. Thanks to all of you for your help with these projects, it’s great
to be a PIONEER!

Cafeteria News
Research has shown that starting the day with a nutritious breakfast helps students to stay alert and perform
better in school. A nutritious breakfast is available each day at McGary from 7:15 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria.
The regular price for breakfast is $1.25. Reduced price breakfasts are $.30. The breakfast menu can be found on the
EVSC website, or in the back of this newsletter.
School Picture Day is Coming
School picture day will be Wednesday, October 30th. Forms will be distributed as the date nears. Please re-
member to send your payment in with your order form to ensure timely delivery.
McGary Team Competes in HealthSouth Olympics
As part of McGary Middle Schools Community Partnership with HealthSouth rehabilitation hospital, a team of
three support staff members from McGary were invited to compete in the annual rehabilitation Olympics held at
HealthSouth. The idea behind the fun filled day was to spread awareness about what patients served by the hospi-
tal deal with on a daily basis, and to show how their lives may need to be adapted in certain areas after the patient
leaves the rehabilitation center. There was a western theme to all of the events, and team members had to
participate in various team games, all while testing their balance, hand-eye coordination, depth perception, motor
skills and attention to tasks. While the team from McGary did not win first prize, they did receive the highly
sought after award of the golden bed pan for having the lowest score of the day. Community partnerships are very
important to us at McGary, and we were honored to be able to participate in this day with HealthSouth.

Caze and Fairlawn Visit
In preparation for the S.T.E.A.M night that McGary will have in November, the related arts teachers and some
students that participate in those classes will visit both Caze and Fairlawn Elementary Schools to showcase the
many opportunities McGary has to offer them in the way of art classes. 5th grade students from both schools will
also have a day to come and be a part of two related arts classes and see what they are like first hand. This will all
culminate in the S.T.E.A.M night so the parents can then see what their students are able to participate in and
help them make informed decisions for their students’ classes in the fall.
Drama Club
Drama club will begin meeting on October 15th. Meetings will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school
in Mrs. Nance’s room with the sponsors being Mrs. Nance and Mrs. Schmidt. The drama club will be preparing for
the annual Spring Musical at McGary. This years musical will be focusing on Holly’s House and members of the
drama club will begin writing, choosing music, and creating dances for the production. All students interested in
drama are encouraged to attend as often as possible. Also, any parent who might have an anonymous comment
about how Holly’s House has helped them or someone in their community is invited to send those comments to
Mrs. Nance or Mrs. Schmidt. Again, the comments will remain anonymous. We will incorporate your comments
into the production.
Advanced Drama Classes Attend Script Writing Workshop

The River Park Center experience was very fun, and we learned a lot about scripting and lighting techniques.
We experienced how to design lighting for the stage and what it looks like when the designer changes the colors.
We also experimented with gobos and learned about color mixing.
Next, we shared our fractured fairy tale ideas with Donna Cartwright, River Park Center’s Educational
Coordinator and children’s theatre director and playwright. We role played characters in different situations and
then discussed how these ideas could help us create biographies for our fairy tale characters. Then we discussed
our own fairy tale ideas. We had been working on this with our groups in drama class. She looked at our costume
and scene designs on Active Inspire documents and gave us some really good suggestions about our plays. She also
gave us suggestions on how we could add characterization, revise our plot, and add recognizable fairy tale
character traits. The trip was a great experience, and we all loved it!!!
This trip was sponsored with a grant from the Public Education Foundation. The drama classes will be
performing their fractured fairy tales for grade schools in November.
Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre Family Night

Clues, clues, clues…. The Jack of Hearts did have an accomplice, but who could it be? Mrs. Dudley, who gives
generous donations to “Dudley” High School, left her diamond ring in the school safe. When she learns it is miss-
ing from the security guard who has been fatally stabbed in the chest, all who are present are accused. Was it Mr.
Richmond the principal, his bumbling secretary Becky, or the ever greedy for more equipment Coach?
Collect your clues and win the door prize! Mark the date on your calendar, Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30 p.m.
and attend our first ever Murder Mystery Dinner family night. Students will begin collecting clues the week of Oc-
tober 21st at school. Watch the marquee outside of the school, listen to all calls home, and ask your student if they
have their clue sheets. Come join us for an evening of fun, food and mystery!
