1. Opportunities after B.Tech
it is necessary for one to decide their career. Now that you have entered into B.Tech. So,
now you have to start looking into your future.
Study or Job ?
There are two options you prefer after you complete your B.Tech degree. If you are
economically efficient and don’t need a job, it is better you go for your further studies. A
specialization will always earn you more salary as well as priority during interviews and
of course sound grip over subject. Otherwise you can find some job.
Further Studies:
If you prefer to continue to studies, you can do Post graduate courses and then obtain a
Ph.D. You have lots of options during this P.G course like M.S/ M.Tech, IAS/IPS,
Navy/NDA and Finance related courses like MBA.
M.S/M.Tech:

If you prefer doing P.G in your field of study, you can go for M.S/M.Tech. If you are
ready to go outside India and financially sound you can prefer M.S. You need to appear
for GRE/TOEFL for doing M.S in Foreign countries.
GRE: The Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standardized test that is an
admissions requirement for many graduate schools in English speaking countries. It is
created and administered by the Educational Testing Service and is similar in format and
content to the SAT. It is a computer based Online Test. The percentile scored in this
exam will decide your future in doing M.S in foreign nations
TOEFL: The Test of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL®, pronounced "toe-full"
or sometimes "toffle") evaluates the potential success of an individual to use and
understand Standard American English at a college level. It is required for non-native
applicants at many English-speaking colleges and universities. A TOEFL score is valid
for two years and then is deleted from the official database.
2. The TOEFL® test is a registered trademark of Educational Testing Service (ETS®) and
is administered worldwide. The test was first administered 1964 and has since been taken
by nearly 20 million students.
Since its introduction in late 2005, the Internet-based test (iBT) has progressively
replaced both the computer-based (CBT) and paper-based (PBT) tests. The iBT has been
introduced in phases, with the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy in 2005
and the rest of the world in 2006, with test centers added regularly.
The demand for test seats remains very high even after almost a year after the
introduction of the test: Candidates have to wait for months since short-term test dates are
fully booked. The four-hour test consists of four sections, each measuring mainly one of
the basic language skills (although some tasks may require multiple skills) and focusing
on language used in an academic, higher-education environment. Note-taking is allowed
in the iBT.
GATE: Conducted by one of seven Indian Institutes of Technology in rotation, Graduate
Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an annual exam for admission to M.Tech and
M.S. programmes in most engineering institutes in India[citation needed]. It is regarded
as a benchmark test for engineering graduates in India [citation needed]. This
examination is coordinated by a committee, comprising of Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National
Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, and Government of India. The
pattern and syllabus are usually based on a candidate's B.Tech. Or BE syllabus.
Minimum eligibility for appearing in this exam is usually a B.Tech, BE, B. Arch. or
Masc. The exam is usually conducted on second Sunday of February.
PSU's like BARC, NPCIL, HAL etc. give importance to GATE scores for various job
positions in their organizations.
It is not worthy for anyone doing P.G in some college other than Foreign/Indian
University Colleges, and Premiere Private Engineering Colleges

responsibilities. India's best brains vie for entry into the Indian Civil Services as officers.
Even though corporate jobs may offer the best of salaries and perks, a majority of
youngsters and their parents still crave entry to the prestigious Indian Civil Services held
by the UPSC. The very fact that a big share of every year's top posts in the civil services
exams are bagged by professionals from various streams, shows that the IAS is still the
dream job for many
These are most preferred routes by engineering students in education after B.Tech
Job/ work:
4. Software industry:
What ever the branch you are in during your engineering you can get into a software
industry with simply communication skills. It is good if you get a job during the campus
placements itself because it is really difficult to find a job after you come out of the
college. However there are various kinds of jobs in Software industry which you get
accordingly as your course of study or your specialization. It is ok if you do job for
sometime and start studying again for your P.G courses.
Own Company:
If you are financially sound, you can start your own company with a little experience in
some other company.
Still there are various choices in jobs like lecturer in some famous engineering college,
call center jobs, etc.
Conclusion:
So decide your career now it self and prepare accordingly to reach your goal.

Question-1
What are the broad options available after completing an Engineering
Degree from India?
You have multiple options depending on your interest, abilities and long term goals. These are:
1) Get a job: Best chances for fresh engineers are via campus placement. Most of the campus
placement involves Aptitude Test and Personal Interview. It’s necessary to clear Aptitude test as it
is used as a method to shortlist candidates from engineering background. Personal interview
involves answering basic as well as technical questions depending on the nature of the job. For
example, for a position of maintenance engineer, questions related to specific area of expertise
may be asked. If it’s maintenance of digital electronics equipments then knowledge in that area
becomes important. It’s same with mechanical engineering. For Design engineer jobs, more
fundamental level understanding may be checked. Conceptual understanding is important to
succeed as a design engineer.
Other option is to approach local SMEs as many of these companies need engineers who are
willing to work hard and demand only reasonable salary. This is a great way to gain some work
experience. You will need to write an effective resume and approach these companies in person.
Come back to www.whatafterengineering.com for guidelines on building your resume.
13. b) Higher Education in Technical Field: You can go for higher studies either in India (M. Tech.)
or abroad (MS in US, Australia, Canada etc.) in an engineering discipline. In case you have
aptitude for some research and can work on a project for a year or two then this is a good option.
In India, M.Tech. done from IITs, IISc Bangalore, BITS Pilani and few other NITs has good value.
However getting only the degree may not be advisable as jobs are mostly in private and there may
be saturation in teaching field. As for MS, US followed by Canada and Australia are good options.
There is some chance that you may get a job after MS in those countries but be prepared to come
back to India in case you don’t get a job. After M.Tech. or MS, Ph.D. becomes another possibility
depending on your interest and ability of doing deeper research.
c) Higher Education in Non-Technical Field: Most common degree in this category is MBA or
equivalent such as PGDM. A small percentage of engineering graduates also pursue higher
degree in CA or ICWA because of comfort with numbers. As for MBA, most common disciplines
which offer successful career are Marketing/Sales in industrial or high tech industry and Finance.
Many of the successful financial analysts come from engineering background again because of
aptitude in quantitative analysis and comfort with numbers. Career in IT industry is another strong
area for BE graduates in IT, CS, CE, EXTC and EE. The jobs are in Marketing/Sales/Business
Development, Business Analysis and HR.
d) Certifications: Certifications such as SAP may increase your chances of employment
particularly for Mechanical Engineers. SAP specialization modules suitable are Materials
Management, Plant Maintenance, and Production Planning. Those with specialization in IT/CS/CE
may join 6-month courses in Database management, Unix administration, C++ or Java
programming etc. While these certifications may not guarantee jobs, if done from good institutes
and with lot of efforts and learning, they will certainly increase the chances. There are many such
courses suitable for various disciplines and you may choose the same if you are interested in those
fields.
Question 2
What are the job opportunities for Engineers in Government Sector/PSU Jobs and
what chances do I have to get one?
For Central Government jobs through Engineering Services Examination a candidate is required
to have good technical knowledge, general awareness and a sound personality. Through
Engineering Services a candidate will get a job in government departments like Indian Railways,
Military Engineering Services, Central Engineering Services, Telecommunication Department,
Central Water Services etc. Engineering Services Examination is a combined examination for
engineering graduates conducted by UPSC every year in the month of May/June. You can find
more information on http://www.upsc.gov.in/ for Central Government jobs. Information on
14. Maharashtra state level jobs for engineers can be found at http://www.mpsc.gov.in/
Also, if you preparing for GATE, then you are through with 60% of your preparation for
Engineering services exam.
Question 3
On what parameters should one decide on the right college for M. Tech.?
M.Tech. is about getting deeper in a particular area of your engineering discipline. As an example,
if you are Mechanical Engineer, then you may do your M.Tech. in Thermal Engineering, CAD /
CAM, Design Engineering, Automotive technology / Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer
Integrated Manufacturing etc. For graduates in Electronics it could be VLSI, Digital Electronics,
Embedded systems, Analog devices etc. Most important aspects to choose a college is quality of
Professors and Guide as well as lab facilities. The project you do during M. Tech. is probably the
most important part of your 2-year education. Typically Ph.D. research topic is an extension of
M.Tech. project. Your first option should be IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), IISc Bangalore,
BITS Pilani and certain NITs. There are more than 10 IITs and you should not rule them out. In
case you plan to apply for an admission in any other institute then do write to us and we will guide
you further.
Question 4
I want to do MS from US. How do I select a good college?
Fortunately, all good colleges in US try to give as much information on the web site as possible.
First of all you need to appear for GRE examination and may also need to appear for TOEFL
depending on your proficiency in English. It’s not about going to the best University but to the one
which is most suitable for you, your interest, financial capabilities etc. Various universities and
colleges are ranked by US News and online information is available at
http://www.usnews.com/education . In this case Internet based research is your best friend. You
should also check the blogs and news for the shortlisted colleges. Typically it is impossible to apply
for more than 5 or 6 colleges and hence the short listing is very important. Come back to
www.whatafterengineering.com for more information.
15. Question 5
I want to do MBA from USA, UK or Australia and want to work
there. What are my chances?
There is no doubt that these countries, and in particular USA, have some of the best management
institutes in the world but they are small in number. As an example, if you do your MBA from
Harvard, Stanford, Wharton, Cambridge etc. then you will get a job in any country. However there
are thousands of other institutions which are average and are primarily driven by profit motives.
Please note that, large percentage of people who do MBA in these countries and from good
colleges are required to have work experience before taking admission. Since the education
industry is completely privatized and that they are short of students, they are open to give
admission to fresh graduates. India is a good source for such students. As a result when you
complete your MBA you compete with experienced people as many of your classmates may have
come with prior work experience. Second major issue is that of work visa. Unless your employer
sponsors you, there is a little chance that you will have a valid work visa. Hence first you have to
find a job then find the employer who will sponsor your visa. But, in case you are willing to take
your chances and have strong financial position then it’s certainly worth a try. Come back to
www.whatafterengineering.com for more information.
Question 8
How are the career prospects for engineers in defense sector?
Engineers can apply directly for jobs in defense via Services Selection Board (SSB). All 3 branches
viz. Indian Army, Navy and Air Force need engineering graduates. If you like disciplined life then
this is the career for you. In Indian Navy, as a Submarine Technical Officer you may be
responsible to run & maintain modern submarines and its weapon systems. In Air Force you will
join the Technical Branch. Much of technical work in Defense is that of running and maintenance of
equipments and systems. The Defense promises Job Security, Economic Stability, pension and in
general good quality of life.
Question 9
I am a non-IT engineer, how fare are my chances of getting into an
IT company?
IT companies hire all types of engineering graduates, even though graduates with specialization in
16. IT, CS or CE may get some preference because they may need much lesser training. It’s a supply
and demand problem. If IT companies cannot find sufficient number of good quality IT, CS, CE
graduates then they will look for graduates from other disciplines. To increase your chances, you
should learn programming languages such as C++ and Java, either by taking classes or on your
own. You should have general interest in software and programming which will help you during the
job interview. Of course, you will need to clear the aptitude test so as to be shortlisted for an
interview.
Question 10
Should I take up a job or continue with my education?
It all depends on the options available and your financial condition. As an example, if you get a
good job offer during campus placement, something you like and will be able to perform, then you
should go for a job. If not then you should explore higher education option. Depending on your
interest which you would have discovered in last 3-4 years, you should decide either on Technical
or Non-Technical route. Whatever you choose, make full commitment to the same.
Question 11
Where are the job opportunities for Mechanical Engineers?
Most mechanical engineers are employed in a wide range of industries, including automotive,
aerospace, chemical, computer, electronic, industrial machinery, manufacturing, mining,
oceanographic, petroleum, pharmaceutical, power, printing, publishing, and textile. Mechanical
engineers typically engage in one or more of the following: research, development, design, testing,
manufacturing, operation and maintenance, and marketing, sales and administration.
Question 13
I am a student of final year in Mechanical Engineering. I want to know
about SAP course and also the specialization that will suit my field.
Please suggest the names of some of the best institutions.
17. Since your BE is in Mechanical engineering, specialization modules in SAP which are most
suitable for you are Materials Management, Plant Maintenance, and Production Planning. As for
the best institutes in this field, here are some of the addresses:
