4 seo tips for your word press blog – part 2

  • 1. 4  SEO  Tips  for  Your  WordPress  Blog  –  Part  2:  Categories     If  you  have  a  blog  you  likely  have  categories  set  up.  A  category  allows  for  a  broad   grouping  of  different  blog  topics.  For  example  we  plan  to  blog  about  the  following  main   categories:  design,  social  media,  marketing  tips,  publishing  tips,  tools  and  events.  These   are  our  main  categories  for  our  blog.  I   advise  that  before  you  even  write   your  first  blog  post  you  define  your   categories.   As  you  may  have  read  in  Part  1,  SEO   stands  for  Search  Engine  Optimization   –  a  vital  part  of  making  sure  that  your   website  or  blog  gets  seen.  Essentially,   this  means  that  if  you  have  great  SEO,   your  blog  has  a  better  chance  of   getting  on  the  front  page  of  Google   with  your  preferred  key  words.  Before  your  website  can  show  up  in  a  relevant  key  word   search,  the  search  engine  Internet  “crawlers”  must  find  your  website  first  and  this  is   where  SEO  comes  into  play.    But  don't  stop  there,  I  want  you  to  SEO  that  category  as  well.  
  • 2. Name:   This  is  simply  your  category  name.  In  this  instance,  we  used  marketing.   Slug:   In  this  instance  I  wanted  to  expand  a  bit  on  my  category  so  I  put  "marketing  tips."  I  did   this  because  I  want  to  use  every  opportunity  to  let  Google  Spyders  know  that  I  am   providing  the  world  with  marketing  tips.   Parent:   When  it  comes  to  categories  I  recommend  that  you  have  a  limited  number  of  main   categories.  I  would  suggest  that  you  have  no  more  than  five.  There  may  be  times  when   you  have  a  sub-­‐category  such  as  Marketing  -­‐  SEO  Tips.  At  which  time  you  would  want  to   make  Marketing  the  parent  of  SEO  Tips.  This  is  like  having  a  drop  down  on  your   navigation  bar.   Description:   This  is  another  SEO  opportunity  but  you  do  want  to  make  sure  that  it  makes  sense  and   you  do  not  mind  people  seeing  what  you  write.  Some  themes  will  show  this  to  people  if   they  hover  at  the  very  top  of  the  page.  I  use  Thesis  Theme  and  it  displays  when  I  hover.   Note  the  yellow  highlighted  text  when  I  hovered  my  mouse  over  the  page  tab.         Tag  Titles:   Some  people  say  that  tags  don't  matter  as  much  these  days  but  I  say  go  with  everything   that  you  can  even  if  they  matter  a  little.  A  little  SEO  is  better  than  no  SEO.  The  key  to   tags  is  to  lead  with  what  you  want  to  be  known  for.    The  max  that  is  recommended  here   is  70  characters.  In  this  area  put  key  words  or  phrases  separated  by  a  comma.

Meta  Description:   This  should  be  a  sentence  that  makes  sense.  It  should  be  a  sentence  that  you  might   actually  say  in  your  elevator  pitch  at  a  networking  meeting.  The  max  characters  in  this   section  is  150  so  put  some  thought  into  this  and  make  it  keyword  rich.   Thesis  Theme  Tips:   The  next  section  of  this  is  Thesis  Theme  specific.  If  you  are  running  Thesis  Theme  on   your  website  or  blog  then  pay  close  attention  because  this  is  just  one  more  example  of   why  Thesis  Theme  is  awesome  and  SEO  lovely.     Introductory  Headline:   Depending  on  the  Wordpress  theme  that  you  are  running,  a  person  may  only  see  links   to  blog  posts  when  they  click  on  a  category  page.  Thesis  Theme  allows  for  you  to   provide  more  for  the  reader  and  even  more  SEO  opportunities.  You  can  welcome  your   reader  and  let  them  know  why  they  have  landed  on  the  page  and  what  they  can  expect.   Introductory  Content:   This  is  where  the  real  magic  starts  to  come  into  play.  This  is  your  chance  to  add  some   key  word  rich  content  that  will  be  displayed  on  your  blog's  category  page.  This  is  the   magic  because  each  word  on  your  blog  is  a  chance  for  the  Google  Spyders  to  learn  more   about  your  site.  The  first  thing  that  people  will  see  when  they  go  to  our  category  page  is   a  bit  of  an  introduction  as  to  why  they  are  there  and  what  we  do.  If  you  do  not  take   advantage  of  this  opportunity  then  people  would  just  see  a  list  of  links.   Note  in  the  image  below  what  our  marketing  category  page  says:
