2. A NOTE FROM
OUR LEADERS
Dear Friends and Supporters,
It’s hard to believe that this year marks our 20th
anniversary. When we started
Free The Children in 1995, we were just a small group of twelve 12-year-olds,
eager to change the world. And while at first we weren’t quite sure how, we had
the passion to know it was possible and the commitment to make it happen.
It is this shameless idealism that has allowed us to build schools in Haiti, set up
health clinics in Kenya and reach out to thousands of youth, educators and
supporters who inspire us every day. Together, we’re leading a global movement
that proves it’s cool to care. Our journey up until now has been an incredible one
and we’re thrilled to share the achievements of the past year with you.
In 2014, Free The Children’s Year of Education initiative exceeded its goal of
fundraising to build 200 schools in developing communities! Riding high on this
incredible feat, this past fall we launched the Year of Empowerment to equip
25,000 families with the skills and resources they need to take charge of their
future. Through our educational program, youth in North America and the UK
have been leading through service and action, making positive changes for
themselves, their communities and the world. Entering into 2015, our movement
for change roars even louder as We Day debuts in Illinois, expanding our reach to
thousands more youth.
From the entire Free The Children family, thank you for being a part of this
exciting movement. We are sincerely grateful for your support.
Be the change,
Craig Kielburger Marc Kielburger Scott Baker

3. A NOTE FROM OUR
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Dear Friends and Supporters,
We can’t think of anything more rewarding than children helping each other to
live free and healthy lives. This message is at the heart of Free The Children
and a movement that we’ve been honored to witness over the past two decades.
From Craig and Marc’s living room to 13 offices around the world,
Free The Children has grown into a community of millions of like-minded
people that empower the Me to We generation—a movement of informed and
compassionate global citizens motivated to shift the world from a focus on
the individual to the power of the collective.
We are grateful to the passionate youth, educators and trusted partners who
have stood by us over the years. Your continuous support has allowed us to
evolve We Day from a modest event in one Canadian city to a series of
12 stadium-sized celebrations spanning Vancouver to Atlantic Canada, Seattle
to California, and even across the pond to the UK.
With your help, our year-long educational programming encourages young
people to discover their unique gifts and take action on issues they’re passionate
about. This commitment to service among youth has led to tens of millions of
dollars raised for local and global causes. Our holistic, sustainable Adopt a Village
development model is breaking the cycle of poverty by providing education
to children, clean water and health care to communities, alternative income
programs for families and food security throughout the year.
All of our achievements were made possible because of your generosity.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your dedication and
enthusiasm as we continue to grow our organization and venture into
a new year of exciting opportunities.

SHIFTING THE

OUR IMPACT HAS LOCAL AND
GLOBAL REACH
We’ve all heard the age-old African proverb:
“It takes a village to raise a child.” At the same
time, it takes children to build community—a belief
reflected in our work.
In Africa, Asia and Latin America, we aim to establish
a comprehensive, child-focused development approach
that gives community members the education, skills
and opportunities to lift themselves out of poverty.
In North America and the UK, we engage youth through
service learning and active citizenship so that they
can be free to achieve their fullest potential as
agents of change.
Both our models are built on the understanding
that the world we share unites us. Our domestic and
international programming work together to provide
young people with the tools and knowledge they
need to lead meaningful action.

22. The latest news from Terre Cassée is music to our ears. On evenings
and weekends, you can hear the faint sound of violins, trumpets and
other instruments drifting from inside the white and green school
building. Students are eager to stay at school after classes to practice
or even just jam with their friends.
These developments are part of the school’s new program: the “Institut
National de Musique d’Haiti.” Dedicated to teaching music to young
people in Haiti, it offers students the opportunity to learn new skills
and they are now regularly performing local songs like “Mèsi” or
“Les p’tits oiseaux” in youth orchestras.
The program is the brainchild of Haiti’s president, Michel Martelly.
A musician himself, President Martelly was inspired on a recent
diplomatic trip to South America where he attended a concert held by
students enrolled in a special music program intended to encourage
school attendance.
We couldn’t be more proud of our partnership with Terre Cassée.
The program has been so successful that it is now a permanent part
of their curriculum and there are plans to expand it to other schools.
Music lessons continue to make school fun and empower students with
a new sense of confidence. Note by note, the song of change plays on.

23. Daisy Barengetuny is surely the hardest working 23-year-old in Kenya.
With eight children, her parents were too poor to send her to high
school. She married as a teenager and worked as a farm laborer to
survive. She seemed on track to live in poverty, like many child brides
in her community.
But when she was 20, Daisy joined a merry-go-round started in her
community with the support of Free The Children. She and other
women learned how to earn, save and invest money. Each member
puts a few Kenyan shillings in a locked box each month, and once a
year, each woman gets a pot of money to invest in something.
When Daisy received her money, she purchased some tea and started
making milky masala chai to sell to farmers working on nearby fields.
With those small profits, she bought a small shop where she made
even more money. Daisy didn’t stop there.
She used the money she made from the shop to buy some goats, which
provided milk that she fed to her baby, Michelle, and sold to members
of her community. Her next big plan is to buy a plot of land to build a
home on. But her ultimate dream?
“I want to give my daughter the education I never had,” says Daisy.
“One day, I will send my daughter to college.”

Joelle Hoeflicher rallied her school and community to raise $5,000
for a clean water project in Ecuador through Free The Children’s
Adopt a Village program.
Stopping at nothing to achieve her goal, she and the Youth in Action
group at her school spearheaded a series of fundraisers. The group
organized a dance, hosted a BBQ, sold baking ingredients at an event
they called “Mama’s Pantry,” and raised nearly a third of their goal
by selling poinsettias during the holidays.
This past summer, Joelle took the trip of a lifetime to India with
Me to We, spending three weeks volunteering in a rural community.
“It was an experience that’s so hard to put into words,” she says.
“It made me a better person.”
In April 2015, she’ll be traveling on another Me to We trip, this time

community where her team’s water project is being built.

personal letters of compassion and encouragement to every student

“I knew it would make a difference in a lot of students’ lives,” says
Sophia McDonald, a student on the leadership team. “I wanted to
make them feel special.”
There were 900 letters to write, but the group was determined to
ensure that every student got one.
“It took a lot more time than I thought it was going to,” laughs
educator Kelly Quayle. “There was one day when I had collected 300
letters and then I realized we had 600 more to write! But they buckled
down and they really pulled it off.”
For Quayle, the best part about the initiative was seeing how the
school’s culture became kinder and more collaborative.
“Students appreciated the letters and felt that they were understood,”
she says. “Caring about a cause really ignited in them a desire to
change the world.”
