Evaluation
Upon completion of my final major project I would say that I have tried my best to make it
look as professional as possible, but as it is my first attempt at making this kind of product
there were some issues I struggled with, but overall I would say that it turned out okay and
I’m happy with the outcome.
1. Technical quality of the final product.
The hardest part of the production was actually the aspect which I thought would be
the easiest. This is of course the drawing of the images, as I thought doing a manga
would play to my strong point of production which is art and design. Although it
turns out it was more difficult than I thought to draw these images due to the fact
that I was working to a deadline so I couldn’t spend as much time as I wanted
completing the images.
This lead to some of them looking rushed and some of them looking unfinished,
which is upsetting because if I had more time I could’ve done a much better job.
Although it can also be brought down to my time management which is something I
defiantly need to improve for future projects.
When it came to editing my dawn images on Photoshop it was also more time
consuming than I thought it would be. My initial intentions were to give the images
some colour and add some more shading while in Photoshop but after editing the
first image I realised that colouring each individual one would take longer than the
time I have left, In fact it would take probably an extra month, so I decided to tick to
traditional manga and have the images black and white. Although it still took some
time to add the shading.
The first page is the one I took the most time with as time wasn’t an issue when I
started, but the third and second were forced as I needed to complete them quickly
to meet my deadline. I would say that the overall quality of the drawings vary, some
are good because I was able to take my time and some are basic. The video quality is
good and the camera movement I did in after effects are fluent and smooth. The
part I found the easiest was putting them together in premier and editing them in
after effects as I felt more relaxed now I finally had the 3 pages finished so I could
take some time to make sure they were edited properly.
2. Production skills you have newly acquired or skills you have further developed.
Everything I did in this project I have had some experience in doing before, for
example using the software’s (Photoshop, after effects), although the style in

drawing was completely different to how I usually draw so it took some time to
design the images. I would defiantly say I increased my skill in that style of art but for
everything else I was using skills and tools I use fairly often so I’m unsure if I have
improved in any of them so I would have to say that the I might have improved
slightly on design techniques.
For example, finding a suitable text to use and deciding on image placement for the
pages, also making small changed to the images to help keep a recurring theme
among my images. Basically making sure my artwork is consistent in quality and style
was something I struggled with so I would say that towards the end of the project I
would have improved on that.
3. How closely your final product matches your initial intentions.
At the start my initial idea was to create a short film, so I and another pupil I was
working with did a lot of research and ideas generation. Eventually we came up with
the idea to do an action thriller and we also developed a plot in which we both liked
and had faith in. Although because of various reasons we decided to do our own
work, so I had to change what I was doing into a teaser trailer so it was more
manageable for me to do.
Although shortly after completing my storyboards I made my final decision to do a
manga style product. The product would consist of a few pages and would be
animated in each frame. When planning for this I had in mind exactly what I wanted
it to look like and what I wanted to do.
Finally when it came to the finished product it isn’t nearly as good as I hoped it
would be, and a lot of the features I wanted it to contain I couldn’t include them due
to time management. Although I’m happy with my final product it isn’t close to my
initial idea.
4. Time management and problem solving
At the start of the project I was ahead of schedule as I did extra work at home but as
I my plans changed from a short film to a manga I had to redo a lot of things and
started pre-production rather late. With this is in mind I was going to originally
redesign my schedule but that would have taken too much time so I based my new
project of the schedule I had made for my other idea.
Although it was in different terms like filming and producing sketches the time range
to complete the task was the same so for this reason I made the decision to use the

same schedule purely on the thought to save time. Especially when I realised just
how long it would actually take just to produce each individual image. So during the
entirety of this project time management was my main concern, and in some cases I
had to go away from planning to make sure I finished one of my pages.
I would say that even though it was my main concern, I didn’t do a good job of time
management as I had to rush certain images that usually would of took me a lot
longer than it originally did. Aside from that I think that my problem solving skills are
what helped me get my project finished in the nick of time.
Being able to prioritise certain aspects of my project is what helped me keep on
track for the most part but towards the end I did have to make some sacrifices to
make sure my product was finished. Overall both my time management and problem
solving skills could have been a lot better and I would have most likely ended up with
a more professional looking product than I do now.
5. Reaching your target audience.
My initial target audience doesn’t have a specific age range or class or even gender
in that fact, because there’s a wide variation of different people that read manga so I
had to base my audience on the content of my product. So based of what my
product was going to contain I made a call on what my audience would be.
The content of my product consisted of small amounts of gore and violence, its main
theme is also action thriller so stereotypically the targeted gender would be
stereotypically male and because of the gore and violence I would say its age range
would be young adults (18-25). The class would most likely be C – B.
The class target is slightly a guess, because after some research I could only find
small gestures as to what it would be, so I had to base it on the kind of people that
read manga which is also hard, but class C seems to be the most reasonable target. I
think that I reached my target audience because the content of my product matches
what my initial ideas were to appeal to that target.
6. Summary conclusion of how you would respond to your project brief if you were to
do it again.
If I was to do this project again there are definitely a lot of changes I would make and
I would approach it in a completely different way. Firstly I would spend more time on
developing a better story and script. This is because I feel like my final product
doesn’t make sense unless I explain it and this makes it less professional.
4. Reece Cordinley
So I would make sure that when I make my schedule that I have an adequate amount
of time to develop that script and get second opinions on it to make sure it makes
sense. Secondly I would skip storyboards because when I was producing the
drawings and placing them on the page designs I barely followed them and had to
make a lot of changes that went against them.
Instead of storyboards I would write down at least a page of what I wanted and small
notes on how it would look this way I can keep my ideas fresh in my mind and I’m
not tied down to a particular layout. I also feel like cutting out the storyboards would
save me time and significantly increase the amount of time I can put into each
image.
Furthermore I would probably draw my images and shade them with pencils rather
than Photoshop due to the fact that they look a lot better and more original also I
prefer shading my images without using the computer. Not only would this save me
time it would increase the quality of images and allow me more freedom on where
to place my images on the pages I pre-designed.
If I was to do all this I know I could easily complete more than just 3 pages, and make
a more professional looking product. My art would also be a lot more interesting as I
wouldn’t feel as stressed when it came to time management. I feel that in terms of
work quality I would be more prepared and the standard of production would
increase significantly.
