Week 9
1. Contemporary Issues in
Psychology: debates
Gather relevant source
material by applying
searching and evaluating
skills
Discuss information and
ideas in a group
Create an action plan as a
group
2. Group debates: next week
What is a debate?
Each side of the debate presents
their argument (their position) on a
statement.
They then question each other and
so can the other people who are
watching. These questions are
meant to challenge them and make
them defend their position, or
sometimes to just ask for more
information and explanation.
Often the audience is asked which
side they think was most persuasive
and therefore ‘won’.
3. What will you debate?
Men and women have different brains
• Group 1 – support the statement
• Group 2 – oppose the statement
The body positivity movement helps to
promote health in society.
• Group 3 – support the statement
• Group 4 – oppose the statement
• These are important and
current issues in Psychology at
the moment that often lead to
different views and arguments.
• Think about how you built up
an argument today.
4. Preparation
• You have your position/argument – so where will
you find the evidence to support it?
• How will you structure it? What language will you
use?
• What kind of questions do you think you might get
asked? Prepare for these too. Use the question
handout you’ve been given, if you want.
• Remember what you now know about how to
work well as a group. How about making an action
plan? What would be in it? What do you
personally think you could contribute to your
group’s work?
5. Online learning and
homework
• You may want to review some of
the online activities on building an
argument.
• Work on your group debate
preparation by searching for
source material and preparing
your argument. Try using
OneDrive to share your work
within the group.
Notas del editor
We should only be with them 20-30 minutes max. They need to then go off on their own as groups to start preparing and building up a plan for the week. Last week, we were there to support them as they worked on their presentations, but this week, we’re not (we can get on with marking!)
Just to remind them of what they need to do – possible questions could be whether they need PowerPoint (if they want – they need to make that decisions, or they could just use notes). Do they all need to speak? (No – but those who don’t present may want to answer questions – as long as they show they’ve engaged with it , that’s fine – this is especially so those with anxiety don't feel put off). Give them the question-forming handout.
Emphasise that they’re free to go/do what they want – they could get a coffee and talk about how they will share out the work/go to a group work space in the library/stay in the room, or go back to their IT room from earlier in the semester. The point is, we won’t be with them and they need to take responsibility for preparing this. Last week was to show them how they can do it. Reiterate their earlier comments about effective group work
We can just show them this to clarify before they work in their groups. Give them the forming questions sheet to help them to preare questions for the other side, and to prepare possible responses to questions themselves.
