4. LIFE EXPERIENCE
4.1 Leadership
From an early age different opportunities helped form me as the leader I am today. In Lucas
Meyer Primary school, opportunities such as being on the student governing body, Head boy
(2006) and Vice-Captain of the rugby team developed my leading skills from a young age.
During my years at Pionier High School, the opportunities to lead continued where in 2007 &
2008 I was chosen as class captain, 2009 I was on the student governing body, 2011 I was
head cheerleader for my sport house, Deputy- Head boy for the hostel and served as a Pupil
council leader.
In 2012 I started my studies at the NWU Potchefstroom Campus where I was in Patria Men’
s Hostel. During my 5 years in the hostel I served on various committees such as the SJGD,
RAG, Culture, Social, Recruitment and Sport. Here communication, leadership and planning
skills were necessary as well as hard work and commitment for events to be successful.
Here team work was vital, but I also learned to be independent and use my own judgment in
solving problems. It also improved my people skills and public speaking ability.
4.2 Culture
Throughout my school years I participated in various culture embracing activities such as
Revues, Cheerleader at athletics and swim-galas, won orator of the year in 2006, 2012 I
participated in the first years concert as a dancer and building the RAG raft. Here my teamw
ork and creativity was tested as well as my work rate and commitment with late nights prepar
ing the above mentioned activities.
4.3 Sport
Sport played a great role in my life from young where I participated in various sports such as
rugby, cricket, tennis, athletics, swimming, golf, hunting and fishing. From 2000 to 2011 I
played in the A/1st
team for rugby and cricket for my school’s rugby team, also playing rugby
at provincial level in 2006, 2007, 2009 (U/16) and 2011 playing for the Natal Academy
Rugby team.
At the NWU PUKKE I represented Patria Men’s Hostel in the first year’s tournament. Further
I played First team for my hostel from 2012-2016 playing well over 50 caps and winning the
hostel rugby league five years in a row. In 2013-2015 I also played in the hostel barbarians
team, representing the NWU PUKKE in four games. In 2015 I played PUKKE sevens as well
as Leopard sevens touring and playing in various tournaments and in 2016 I represented the
NWU PUKKE sevens at the Varsity Sports tournament in Cape Town. I was also recruited to
play for PUK 1 (rugby union) in the Pirates Grand Challenge.
Sport is a great team builder, exposing your character and teaching one commitment,
responsibility, how to handle conflict, integrity, risk taking and decision making skills.
4.4 Community
Taking part in community upliftment activities while in the student governing body in school,
as well as participating in the annual RAG at the NWU PUKKE, teaches one to care and hel
p others. Organization skills are formed during these activities, also trustworthiness and one’
s ethics are tested whilst working with collected money for charity.
4.5 Academic Achievements
In primary school I received the Value and Attitude merit award seven years in a row and wo
n 3 academic awards in 2006. In high school I was on the top ten achievers list for five years
and received Academic Merit award five years in a row. I successfully completed my Nationa
l Senior Certificate exams and obtained five distinctions (find attached National Senior Certifi
cate).
In 2012 I started my studies at NWU PUKKE where my core modules were Geology and
Botany. I completed my second (2013) year with two distinctions, in 2014 I completed my
B.Sc Geology and Botany Degree and was accepted for my Honours in 2015, obtaining a
NWu bursary for an academic average of more than 65%. Two short courses were complete
d in 2014: Rehabilitation, mining proses and Radiation & Rehabilitation at Centre of
Environmental Management (CEM).
In 2015 I completed my Honours in Environmental Geology, completing the year with two
distinctions. My year project was on the Geotechnical properties of pedogenic soils (THRIP
project). In 2016 I started with my M.Sc in Environmental Science, focussing on soil water
modulating and crop predictions.
4.6 Interests and Hobbies
I grew up on a farm in Kwa Zulu Natal and love the outdoors, farming, traveling, various
sports, reading and music. I am not new to harsh conditions and love working in remote
undeveloped places. I am unmarried and easy relocatable, thus working on various sites and
in locations would not be a problem.
5. Practical Work and Experience
In the 3 year B.Sc degree, we constantly went on excursions to goldmines, tailing facilities
(in Gauteng and Northwest) and diamond mines in the Northern Cape; field visits exploring
the geological, soil and botany world, learning applicable skills and building the necessary
knowledge in the specific fields. In 2013 (2nd
year) I started to assist lecturers (such as Mr.
Piet van Deventer) in the field doing a lot of field and lab work, sampling soil, rocks and plant
material where after I got various lab tests under my belt.
The Honours project I worked on with Mr. van Deventer in my fourth year was focused on
the geotechnical properties of soils. Field visits were conducted across South Africa where
various soils were sampled and a wide range of tests was done. This was a preliminary
study for a future M.Sc in soil science where a geotechnical classification system will be
created. Here various sampling, soil classification and laboratory skills was learnt as well as
GIS mapping, rockworks program, in deep research and dissertation writing.
In 2016 I started with my M.Sc in Environmental Science, focusing on soil water
modeling. The practical work consisted of soil sampling, more than 2m deep, planting
access tubes for the Newton Moisture Meter, setting up weather stations and using the
Newton Moisture Meter to gather soil water content data every 2 weeks at 3 different
localities in the Northwest and Free State business unites of Omnia fertilizer. Data reworking
and development of a model utilizing soil water and real life weather data to predict crops,
are key objectives in this research project. Therefor computer literacy in programs such as
Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Project and GIS programs such as
Arcmap, Global mapper and Google earth are necessary in completing the project.
