2. createathon 2010
What good can come of it when you show up
for work in jeans and a t-shirt, and you bring a
toothbrush? When darkness falls and the lights stay
on? When time, for once, does NOT equal money?
CreateAthon is the crazy, nonstop, no-sleep, 24-
hour marathon during which Riggs Partners (and
an outrageously talented band of guest creatives)
pour their hearts, souls and unbridled energy into
marketing materials for worthy nonprofits in South
Carolina. It’s our favorite day/night/day of the year.

Ladies Armed With Knowledge (LAWK) is a
mentoring program for young ladies ages 12 and
older that stands against issues perpetuated by low
self-esteem, seeking to motivate and develop lead-ership
qualities among these at-risk young women.
LAWK asked the CreateAthon apprentice team to
help increase awareness of the program among
teen girls. We updated the identity, developed a
positioning tagline, and created a recruitment
poster campaign.

4. children’s
advocacy center
The Children’s Advocacy Center provides an array
of services to child victims of sexual abuse and
their families. CAC asked the CreateAthon team to
help increase awareness of both the issue of child
sexual abuse and their organization. We developed
an updated identity system, web design, panel
card brochure, video, online banner campaign and
outdoor campaign.
Could there be an event more traumatizing
for a child than sexual abuse?
Each year, we provide
services to nearly 600
abused girls and boys. Most
have been sexually abused;
one-third are younger than
six years old.
It’s our mission to bring
healing and give voice to
these children.
That’s why we are here, a safe place where
abused and traumatized children can open up,
get help and begin to reclaim their childhoods.
With a continuum of care recognized for its
e ectiveness, we promote a multidisciplinary
team response to child abuse through
prevention, intervention, and treatment.
That team approach — provided in one
child-friendly place — helps ensure that
children are not further traumatized on their
journey to recovery.
The Children’s Advocacy Center works with
community law enforcement, Department of
Social Services, medical providers, therapists,
the legal community, and others to help
abused children and their families along every
step of that journey, from investigation, to
treatment, to justice. Ours is an e ective model:
Working with prosecutors to consistently reach
a conviction rate as high as 90 percent.
The Children’s Advocacy Center o ers:
Forensic Assessments Evaluations of children
suspected of being physically or sexually
abused or who have witnessed a violent
crime. These interviews are conducted in a
child-friendly, safe, and nurturing environment
designed so that other investigative
professionals may also observe the interview.
This allows each of member of the treatment
team to better see to the needs of the child.
Medical Examinations With sensitivity and
skill, an on-site pediatrician with a medical
specialty in the assessment and treatment of
child abuse provides comprehensive medical
examinations in our center.
Therapy Using evidence-based practices,
our licensed, masters-level therapists provide
one-on-one counseling, family counseling, and
non-o ending parent counseling.

Girls on the Run encourages preteen
girls to develop self-respect and
healthy lifestyles through running. The
organization asked for promotional
help in recruiting women as coaches
and volunteers. The CreateAthon team
developed a campaign concept that
tapped into a common, yet powerful
insight among all women: within each
of us lies a girl who needed a role

Girls on the Run is a unique, fun program that
combines training for a 5K run or walk with a
powerful curriculum that promotes self-esteem,
life skills development and healthy values.
Each 12-week Girls on the Run session utilizes
running and a three-part curriculum to boost
third- through fifth-grade girls’ (age 8-13)
knowledge of health, fitness and self-esteem.
The program incorporates development and
hopes to prevent future at-risk actions such as
substance or alcohol use, eating disorders,
premature sexual activity, sedentary lifestyle,
depression, suicide attempts and confrontations
with the juvenile justice system. Girls on Track
is an affiliated program that serves sixth through
eighth graders.
Girls on the Run began in 1996 in Charlotte,
NC, and has spread to more than 160 sites
across North America, serving more than
40,000 girls every year.

Volunteer!
Even if you are not a runner, there are
many ways to support our Girls on the Run!
Site Liaison
Site liaisons serve as the contact person between the site and GOTR of Columbia.
Liaisons help spread the word, distribute registration forms and ensure the group has
enough participants. Liaisons may be team coaches, but do not have to be.
Head Coach
This volunteer heads the site’s coaching team, presents the GOTR curriculum and
guides and mentors participants. The head coach works closely with the GOTR of
Columbia Council Director and requires about three to four hours per week for 12
weeks with occasional weekend time for training and race events. GOTR of
Columbia provides training for all coaches. CPR certification is required.
Junior Coach
Girls under the age of 18 can serve as junior coaches to support and help program
participants.
Assistant Coach
This volunteer supports the site’s head coach and program participants. The position
takes about one and a half to three hours per week for 12 weeks. Assistant coaches
can attend one or both program sessions per week.
Running Buddy
Running buddies support and encourage the girls during
their 5K celebration run. Running Buddies are assigned to
participants who will likely benefit from extra
encouragement and camaraderie during the celebration
run.
Race Day
GOTR of Columbia always needs race day volunteers!
The time commitment is usually only three hours on a
Saturday morning.
SoleMates®
SoleMates walk, run or bike in any event of your choice and raise funds for GOTR
Columbia. SoleMates contributions help fund GOTR scholarships.
Board Member
The Board of Directors supports GOTR of Columbia’s mission and needs, as well as
advises, governs, guides and promotes GOTR of Columbia. The Board meets once a
month and members serve on two-year terms.
Start a
new team!
Want to bring Girls on the Run to your school, church or neighborhood? GOTR sites must provide the following:
• A designated Site Liaison to coordinate with GOTR of Columbia. The site liaison can be a staff or faculty member,
parent, community member, PTO president, etc. He or she must have a good relationship with the site and facilitate
communication between GOTR of Columbia and the site.
• Provide a safe place for running. The location does not have to be a track. Open fields work fine. Some lessons will
require measuring off part of the area for running specific distances.
• Provide an alternate rainy-day site. You must ensure a gym, classroom or other rain location does not conflict with
other after-school activities during practice times.
• Two days per week to practice. Coaches choose either 75-minute or 90-minute programs.
• A plan to recruit participants. While GOTR teams must have at least eight girls, the
maximum group size is 15. Sites with more than 15 girls can create multiple teams,
provided there are enough coaches and extra space.
• At least one coach. GOTR of Columbia can help provide additional coaches and
will provide all coach training.
There is a one-time program registration fee. GOTR can provide full or partial
scholarships based on need.

Partners for Active Living (PAL) aims to
make Spartanburg County a healthier,
more livable community by promoting
walking, bicycling and physical activity
as part of everyday life. The group is
working with like-minded organizations
to launch a new initiative in 2011 that
incorporates active living with other
lifestyle choices like healthy eating
and buying locally grown food. A core
component of the program is a new
brand, rooted in a fabulous website, that
will engage the public in this movement.
Here is a sampling of the work
