2. Abstract
This paper is made to analyse a short story
The Boarding House by James joyce. The
purpose of this study is to understand the
symbols that uses in it. The writer uses
theory of intrinsic aspect and close reading
as the method. The writer finds that there
are many symbols in this short story. In
conclusion, there are 6 symbols consist of
name of character, color, gesture of
character, chruch, the society and the song.

Prose is a kind of literary works. Prose
usually appears in several types such as
Essay, Novel/short story and nonfiction

comes from the Latin "prosa" which means
"straightforward." Prose can be written or
spoken and has no formal metrical
structure. It is basically ordinary language -
the way people speak. Usually the author
uses symbol to make their literary works

The scope of this study is to analyse the symbols
that uses in the short story The Boarding House by
James Joyce.
5. Theory
Intrinsic element is structural development
within the genre. Intrinsic element of prose
consists of characters, characterization,
setting, plot, point of view, tone, theme,
and symbol.
Symbol is a person, object, or event that
suggests more than its literal meaning. This
basic definition is simple enough, but the use
of symbol in literature makes some readers
confused Making the readers confused with
usage of symbols in literary works because
they don't know the meaning of the symbol
referred by the author.
6. The biography of James Joyce
James Augustine James was born in February
2, 1882, in Dublin, Ireland. From 1893 to
1898 Joyce studied at Belvedere College,
another private boy's school, and in 1898 he
enrolled at University College, Dublin. He
graduated in 1902 with a degree in modern
languages.In 1918, his poorly received play,
Exiles, was published in London. It was also
that year that chapters from Ulysses, his
novel-in-progress, began to appear in the
American journal The Little Review.
Publication of the completed book would not
occur until 1922. Ernest Hemingway and
Winston Churchill were two of the first to buy
the famous new book. Joyce died at the age of
59 on January 13, 1941, in Zurich, where he

1. Mrs. Mooney - money - it is represent as a
name of main characters Mrs. Mooney who
has interested in money and honor on her

woman, She always flirted with the young
men and very lively the intention was too

Through the analysis of the short story, we can
see that Joyce using 6 symbols in his literary
work such as name of character, color, gesture
of character, chruch, the society and the song.
It can be concluded that these symbols make
the short story more exciting.
