-InsureSec, what happened with importance of education?
With the current structure of InsureSecs licensing, it is not only possible but likely that you
fully without any previous relevant training may be a InsureSec-licensed insurance brokers in
less than 48 hours.
A brief description of InsureSec and purpose of the licensing
InsureSec have been operating for a number of years and on their web page the state the
following:
"We license insurance brokers so you as a consumer can make secure investments in
insurance"
An important purpose of the license is the protection of the private individual. To remember
is that there is already such a function in the form of the Swedish Financial Supervisory
Authority, FSA.
, which is also the authority which issues permits. InsureSec is thus a function for additional
security and control of the industry and its customers.
To achieve this, a InsureSec syllabus with detailed knowledge requirements that the licensing
tests is based on. The test itself, to get the license, consists of 100 questions.
We must therefore assume that the purpose is this to add something beyond what it would
have been without InsureSecs presence or tests.
In this post we omit all details of the regulation itself, FFFS 2005: 11, and the role of the FSA
and what InsureSec may, or should do. This is explained in more depth in a separate post.
We stick instead to the topic How to become intermediaries in 48 hours.
important basic information
• InsureSec informs its members that the licensing test meets the requirements of the FSA.
• InsureSec informs its members that the FSA sees the license as proof of the skills a broker
must have under those regulations.
It is on this basis the new opportunity arose, and on this basis it rests.
Facts about human nature
In a perfect world, such mistakes are not being used in the wrong way, but we do not live in a
perfect world. In reality, many but not all do like water does, they take the path of least
resistance.
When a person no longer needs to fight with several years of training to learn what is in the
regulations, but may choose to pass the test without training, then many people choose, like
the water, the path of least resistance.
To pass a test comprising 100 questions, with the requirement of 70 right answers is a
completely different thing than to educate themselves in the subjects tested by. The number
of questions is set on a foundation that the test participants already have the relevant
education, ie as a reconciliation, but to actually test the knowledge stated in the regulations, it
is probably 10-20 times too low.
Regardless of how you interpret this and what to think about this, here is a fact:
1. You can take the test, without any requirement of education ant you need not be a
registered broker with the FSA.
2. After you passed the test you can then use that license as a proof of your knowledge
and become a registered insurance broker with the FSA.
2. To license and write the test
100 questions, that’s is the objective to cope with.
When the license tests are "weighted" to ensure that the examinee will receive a certain
minimum number of questions about particularly important areas the test are in practice
considerably easier to cope with. The task to meet is to answer right on 70 of these 100
questions at first, second or even third attempt.
The test consists of multiple choice questions where one (1) option is always the right answer
and three (3) options are always wrong. That's right, the starting position is that you got 25
correct answers out of the 100 if you chance on all questions.
Added to this is also that with multiple choice questions where only one (1) option is right you
will always be able to exclude certain options that contradicts itself, some options are
obviously wrong, and you also come quite far with common sense. There is a severe limitation
in the query structure for how varied you can do multiple choice questions where one (1)
answer is always right and three (3) always wrong and no free (motivate your answer) is
needed.
First test and clear it in 48 hours.
With 25 correct answers on pure gamble + common sense and exclusion, say 30-40 correct
answers only as a starting point. To this we need to then top with 40-50 correct answers, it's
only 70 correct answers required after all.
An average person has of course no problem to temporarily memorize knowledge
regarding the number of questions. Even if the questions were of a different structure or
caliber would be this a great challenge.
When the tests is weighted we also know that it will always contain questions in key areas,
and with good crash course, we can simply focus on only teach us the tip of the iceberg.
Everything that has to do with understanding why, see relationships, read the terms and
conditions, understand, justice mechanisms and so on. we can leave behind.
We focus only on the issues that are likely to be, and ignore the rest. The pulp of say 2-3
years of education, and thus the whole learning process involving being shaped as brokers
etc. yes in fact the knowledge itself, is not a requirement to take the test.
Day 1: The day before the licensing test
Take a crash course from the training institute I work for or another teacher's course. Make
sure you take a recorded preparatory / refresher course, that that focus on
the important stuff, the tips of the icebergs in each mandatory knowledge field. Do the
course twice.
Choose the course that offers many practice questions that are also designed with the same
structure as the test, ie, one (1) right and three (3) wrong.
Cattle through say 100-150 questions 2-3 times.
Day 2: Licensing Test
Congratulations, you are now probably licensed and you meet the demands from the FSA.
Time to start meeting the customer and provide advice about “secure insurance
investments”.
If you did not pass the test, then repeat the above process again as many times as you need
until you succeed.
Conclusion and comments
3. To quote one of my clients who is a insurance broker with two years education:
"Now I can toss my xxx diploma in the trash, it's water worth"
Or another that i belive says a lot:
"Some of our competitors have started hiring 20-year-old salespersons with InsureSec
license"
Conclusion: This is the present situation and in my opinion it is a big failure, a gap in the
system, that hopefully will be corrected, and preferably before something happens and we got
ourselfs a new witch-hunt in the press. The bad press only hurts the serious brokers.
Finally, I wish you luck on the exam!
