MERCURY
Mercury is the planet
closest to the Sun.
It is a small planet, a little
bigger than Earth’s moon.
Mercury is covered with
thousands of dents called
craters.
Fastest revolving planet
VENUS
Named after the Roman Goddess of Love
and beauty.
Shines very brightly and often times
called the “morning and evening star”
Second planet from the Sun and called
the Earth’s Twin.
Is the hottest planet in the solar system.
It rotates backward or clockwise direction.
A rocky planet.
EARTH
Our home and the third
planet in the solar system.
Largest and densest
among the inner planets.
The only rocky planet to
sustain life. It has an
atmosphere.
The inner planet with one
(1) moon
EARTH’S MOON
A satellite is an object that
orbits another object in
space.
Just as planets revolve
around the Sun because of
gravity, moons revolve
around planets.
Earth’s Moon is named
Cynthia.
MARS
The fourth in the solar
system and named after the
Roman God of War
Known as the “red planet”
It has two (2) moons
which is believed to be
asteroids
It has huge volcano known
as Olympus Mons
It is cold in Mars
What are the inner planets?
The four planets closest to the sun are known
as the inner planets. Mercury, Venus, Earth,
and Mars
Inner Planets are also called Terrestrial Planets
because they are solid, dense and are made up of
rocks
JUPITER Known as the “king
of the planets”
Its most prominent
feature is the “Great
Red Spot.”
Has 16 moons, 4 of
which are known as the
“Galilean satellites.”
SATURN
The second
largest gas planet.
Has more than
31 moons and the
largest is Titan
URANUS
Uranus rotates in the
opposite direction as most
other planets. And unlike
any other planet, Uranus
rotates on its side.
Has 13 rings and 27 known
satellites/moons.
NEPTUNE The planet farthest
from the sun.
Known as the
“twin planet” of
Uranus
It has 8 known
moons.
What are the outer planets?
The four planets farthest from the sun are
known as the outer planets. Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, and Neptune.
Inner Planets are also called Jovian Planets
because they are made up of gas.
 Inner Planets revolve around
the sun faster than the Outer
Planets.
 Outer Planets rotate on their
axes faster than the Inner
Planets.
Planets except Venus and Uranus
rotate on their axis in counter-
clockwise direction or from WEST to
EAST known as prograde motion.
Venus and Uranus rotate in a
clockwise direction or from EAST to
WEST known as retrograde motion.
Orbit is the imaginary path where
the planets move around the
sun.
All of the planets revolve around
the sun in a counter-clockwise
direction.

where both people and animals live.
A. Mercury C. Earth
B. Venus D. Mars
_____ 3. Which is the most beautiful planet in the solar system?
A. Jupiter C. Neptune
B. Saturn D. Mars
_____ 4.Why do planets do not collide as they move around
the sun?
A. Because the planets are not of the same size.
B. Because the planets move in different direction.
C. Because the planets have their own orbit.
D. Because the planets move in different speed.

  1. Earth is the only planet in the solar system known to support life.
  2. Moons are satellites of planets. Earth has one large moon. The diameter of the Moon is about one-fourth the diameter of Earth.
  3. Why It is reddish in color? The rocks and soil that cover much of Mars contain the mineral iron oxide. This mineral is reddish-brown in color. It is the same material that makes up rust. This has given Mars its nickname, the "Red Planet.“ It has white caps on its poles which is ice.
  4. Astronomers call it “the eye of Jupiter.” It is actually a giant storm with winds whirling up to 300 km per hour. The fourth largest of the 16 moons Jupiter are known as the “Galilean satellites.” Ganymede is the largest of all the moons of the solar system.
  5. Light gas of methane and ice form so much of Uranus. Looking at it from a telescope it looks like a large, smooth, blue-green ball. Its atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and methane with small amount of ammonia.
  6. It is the smallest and the last of the gas planets. It atmosphere is mostly hydrogen and helium with same methane.
  7. What do we consider as the center of the solar system? SUN Do you think planets collide as they revolve around the sun? No. Because planets have their own orbit.
  8. What are the nearest planets from the sun? M-M. We call them as the inner planets since they are near from the sun. What are the farthest planets from the sun? J-N. We call them as the Outer planets since they are away from the sun. Using the chart, What is one reason people cannot live on Mercury or Venus? What is the planet that we live in? Earth belongs to the Inner planet, but why can’t we live on Mercury or Venus? If we can’t live on Mercury or Venus since they are closest to the sun, then can we live on Uranus and Neptune? No. Because they are very far from the sun and are considered as gas planet.
