Teaching coding is currently gaining momentum in classrooms and informal learning spaces (coding fairs, labs, challenges, etc.) all over the world. In Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, a number of organizations offering coding courses for refugees (e.g. Refugees on Rails, HackYourFuture, CodeYourFuture) have been created as a reaction to the " refugee crisis " in 2015-16. Such civic initiatives are aiming far beyond simply creating a new generation of programmers in response to integration and the lack of software developers in the job market. They show great potential in terms of providing rapid, innovative, and adaptive kinds of educational support. Their work is done by rapid and iterative testing of ideas in a way that traditional education institutions are not able to, possibly because of factors such as regulations, internal processes or mere traditions. To evaluate the impact of such approaches for the educational sector, and to develop courses appropriate for the needs of heterogeneous and culturally diverse groups, the authors report on two programming courses for refugees based on an empirical technique called " action research " and seek to offer practical advice for the implementation of courses for cultural diverse groups in the educational system. This study was conducted at " refugees{code} " , an Austrian coding school for refugees.

The presentation outlines the problem of contradictory expectations against professional education of the multinational giants and SME-s. The need for “engineers” more or less in the “classical” understanding of the word is evident and pressing in SME-s. The up-to-date data processing and networking has also a -side effect- in loosing important part of basic knowledge. On the other hand research and development in universities are oriented towards areas covered by the modern, sophisticated instrumentation and less on solving specific problems appeared in different industrial applications. This way important energy, time and money are wasted or at least inefficiently spent. Is this a characteristic of our era or it is just a “side effect” of the extremely fast scientific-technical development. Efforts at the Sapientia Tg.Mures with the support of local companies aiming a more industry oriented education are outlined. Experiments involving the Plasmaterm SA is aiming both research and development as well as current production activities are evaluated. A specific concept of dual education is presented, with active participation of students as part-time employees of the company during their last year of studies is briefly evaluated.

Skills have become the global currency of 21st century economies. Without sufficient investment in skills people languish on the margins of society, technological progress does not translate into productivity growth, and countries can no longer compete in an increasingly knowledge-based global economy. And, at a time when growing economic and social inequalities are a major challenge, effective skills policies must be part of any response to address this challenge. But this ‘currency’ depreciates as skill requirements of labour markets evolve and individuals lose the skills they do not use. For skills to retain their value, they must be continuously maintained and upgraded throughout life so that people can collaborate, compete and connect in ways that drive economies forward. With its skill assessment programmes PISA and PIAAC, the OECD has developed global metrics not only to assess the quality and quantity of the skills available in the population, but also to help policy-makers determine and anticipate the skills required in the labour market; develop and deploy those skills in the most effective and equitable ways; and establish sustainable approaches to who should pay for what, when and how.
