2. AFROBEATS
• For my music magazine I have decided to do Afro-beats. Afro-beats
is a combination of Yoruba music, jazz, Highlife, and funk
rhythms, fused with African percussion and vocal styles,
popularized in Africa
• The new sound hailed from Nigerian artist Fela Kuti, called the
Afro-Shrine. Fela Kuti’s music was inspired by the Black Panther
movement, with lyrics that were infused with messages that
appropriated the ‘language of black power.
• From Afro-shine it lead to Afrobeats, this is now one of the most
recognizable music genres in the world and has influenced as
many Western musicians as it has African ones with its exuberant
style and polyrhythms.

4. URBAN JUNGLE
I choose these two names for
my magazine 'NewAfrica'
and 'Urban Jungle' and drew
them out. I showed them to 15
students. They decided they
liked the name 'Urban jungle
and the first drawn font.
comments were:
- The pattern gives a African
vibe
- The font is edgy
- The name is unique and
creative
5. INSPIRATION
What inspired me was music I enjoy, however when looking at African music magazines I felt they
were dull and no representing the music, I feel this will help my music magazine stand out. In all the
images the artist are wearing vibrant colours, and patterned clothes. The women's makeup isn't
natural they are very done up. Looking at these images and others it will help me style my models,
and even the colours and theme on my magazine.
6. These three women are AfroBeats artist, as you can all three artist are wearing traditional
clothing and patterns, I will be doing this when clothing my model. Looking at music video’s
and magazine’s there is normally one or two people that the camera, so for my front cover I
will only use 1-3 people.
7. HOUSE STYLE
I will be using a traditional African
pattern on my magazine, the ones
above are Kente ( Ghanaian cloth)
9. RESEARCH
• When listening to Afrobeats, looking at magazines and artist you see a lot of
vibrant colours and patterns. To me this represent Africa, bright loud and
unique. The costume worn by many artist have very traditional patterns and
styles. Patterns, colours and textiles were used as a form of identity with each
African tribe having their own unique patterns which also made it easy to
spot outsiders. Also showed different social classes. The patterns have been
used by many generations, and now is used in high end fashion stores and
fashion designers. I feel the colours and patterns represent Afrobeat so this
will be conveyed on my magazine.
10. Looking at African music magazines
I’ve seen that the image takes up
most of the magazine, it’s the main
focus, there isn’t much writing.
11. RESEARCH
• Looking at different African music magazines, they have the same conventions as
R’n’B magazines so I will be to infusing convections of a R'nB music magazine
• Masthead - the title block for the magazine, this is eye catching and distinct
• Spread - a story that covers more than one page
• Secondary lead - a sneak preview of an inside article or story usually a picture
• Colour - a simple colour scheme to adding to the distinctive design
• Barcode
• Issue and price
• Cover line
• Main image
12. INTERVIEWS
• I interviewed students, asking what kind of elements would they like to see in
a magazine. I learnt that my audience want to see celeb news and fashion
tips, also they love to hear about new
• Also I learnt that some feel its easier to read online so I'll have a Facebook
page informing my audience, to meet all their needs
• I also interviewed a person from my target market and asked the same
questions also what type of things their looking for on my music magazine
• By interviewing someone from my target audience I have learnt that my
audience wants to see a mixture of urban Afrobeats and old original African
music. Also they want to see the magazine full of colour and prints.
13. IDEAS FOR MAIN ARTICLE
• When talking to my target market, they said they would love to see an
article about a new artist and their journey.
• Looking at other double spreads I've seen they have interviews with celebs
so I feel my article idea is perfect for my magazine and fits the conventions
of a magazine.
14. USES OF GRATIFICATION
• For my magazine I’m going to uses the ‘use of gratification’ to help develop
my magazine.
