Comeniusproject "Go Green, Go Clean - Act Now!" The Sint-Jan Berchmansschool Viversel (Belgium) made efforts to educate their children in a environmental-friendly and sustainable way of living.

1. “ The Sint-Jan Berchmansschool Viversel, Heusden-Zolder (Belgium) worked in their comeniusproject “ Go Green, Go Clean – Act Now!” together with the organisation “ GREEN” in order to sensibilizise their children.

2. GREEN is an organisation which supports schools in their efforts to educate their children in a environmental-friendly and sustainable way of living. The title of their campaign is: “ Children change the climate”.

3. “ Children change the climate”. This campaign included 5 action-days

4. 15 October: Eat local, think global. We stimulate consumption of local (Belgian) fruit. This includes less ships, plains, trains, trucks, refrigerators … which means less CO2 in the air’. The children of the kindergarten visited the orchard of the Saint-Ferdinand school to collect apples. The children of class 1,2, 3 and 4 saw a movie about how applejuice is made, they sang a funny 'apple-song', they create a giant red apple on the playground (they all wore red clothes that day, so they made a big red 'human' apple).

5. 22 November 2010: Recycling Action. Collecting old books, clothes and toys for the second hand market. We try to give new life to old things. We stimulate using recycled and second hand things to reduce the amount of waste products. The 1,2 and 3 class visited the second hand market center. There they got information about how 'old things' are collected, repaired, stocked and distributed to other second hand market shops.

6. 16 February 2011: Thick Sweaters Day. We lower the heating system. This to remind the Kyotoprotocol. By wearing a thick sweater, we can lower the heating in school. So we can reduce the consumation of energy and we can lower the costs of heating. It also means less CO2 in the air. We started the day with a warming-up exercice on the playground. Then we went into class, but every time we felt “cold”, we could take a short break to do a warming-up activity. In the break, our children got a cup of hot chocolat !

7. 22 March 2011: Tap Water Day. Drink tap water and reduce litter. By stimulating the drinking of tap water, we try to reduce the transportation of water which includes less trains, trucks, refrigerators … which means less CO2 in the air’. We also try to avoid litter by reducing the amount of plastic bottles. Our school has the ambition to become a ‘tap water only’- area as soon as possible. All our students receive a bottle (sponsored by the company of Tap Water) which they bring to school every day, filled with tap water.

8. 11 May 2011: Mobile with less CO2. Make a walk, ride the bicycle, take the public transport. We try to make the transfer to our school without using the car. We stimulate to do this as much as possible throughout the year.
