The industry i am looking to work in is that of the Film and Television Industry. I am
looking to become a video editor in this Industry and eventually work on large scale
films or television programs and series.
The roles i am likely to get directly out of university are not full on editorial roles. I am
likely to get a role as an editing assistant or, if the company still uses tapes as opposed
to digital media, a digitizer.
An assistant editor will likely do small projects or small portions of work on larger
projects while reporting directly to the chief editor. This role is of higher import than
that of a digitizer who is someone that would simply transfer footage from DV tapes
onto computers which means that editors do not have to stop working to do so.
4. The job profile and Personal requirements for an Editor are as follows:
Film and television editors edit and assemble films and videos from raw, unedited
footage (‘dailies’ or ‘rushes’), taking into account the mood, pace and climax of films or
television productions.
Film and television editors may perform the following tasks:
view processed film and video with production personnel to analyse, evaluate and select
scenes and to decide which scenes need to be improved or reshot
trim film and copy video segments to specific lengths, arranging and joining them in
sequence as a final product or for inclusion within a subsequent broadcast or longer
production
5.
import, compile and render digital audio and visual footage on a computer to enable the
content to be presented with maximum effect
select and incorporate visual effects and transitions for maximum effect
select stock shots from a film library and edit and incorporate them into film or video.
There is often a need to work long or irregular hours. Work may need to be carried out
on location.
Personal Requirements:
artistic flair and interested in visual media, patient, attention to detail, able to work as
part of a team, able to take direction, lateral thinking.

My original plan was to create a very simple logo and business card that were very
clearly based in the film industry. To do this i wanted to use images that are highly
associated with film such as film reels and strips of film. This along with my name and
details would create the basic card. I chose to use a film strip for my logo along middle
of the card and to put my details on the other side. This was the first effort.
8.
I was seriously unhappy with my first effort, the card looked extremely basic and
unprofessional and showed very little creative talent. I wanted a more creative look and
changed it to black and white and moved the film strip to the side with the details. I
introduced the film reel on the other side as my logo.
9.
At this point i was still unhappy and unsure how to proceed with my design. However
upon looking at some examples of other film logos i noticed that a lot of them featured
circular stamp designs. I therefore decided to try this and decided to base the colours on
the wax seal style.

By this point i was happy enough with my logo that i wanted to see how it would look on
a business card. I therefore used Moocards to simulate a design and also take the
chance to redesign the other side. I changed the colour of the background behind the
logo and also carried the colour scheme onto the front of the card. I included contact
details and the details to my vimeo page.
11.
After seeing my card in the flesh i decided that the text on the design was not what i
wanted it to be. It was not as tidy as is could be and the font was not really suitable for
the professionalism i was after. I also decided to change it to say ‘editor’ rather that
‘films’
12.
Having finished the design of my Logo i could create a cohesive image with my logo,
business card and CV. I changed my CV to be more concise and also arranged it so that
the most relevant and important information was at the top. I added some industry
specific information such as having a valid passport for travel to jobs. To make it
cohesive with my image i added the logo in the corner and changed my name to match
the font of the Logo.
13.
I created a blog at http://stephenfarrercreative.tumblr.com/ in order to chart my
progress. Doing this blog helped me because it provided me a public place in order to
present what i had created. Knowing it was public meant that whenever i finished a
design and placed it on the blog i could gauge how happy i was with it better because i
would think about what other people would think of it. Seeing each design in the same
place allowed me to easily chart the progress of my designs and i could easily see how
they had improved with each different concept and iteration.
My blog also allowed me to have a place to showcase some of my work and gave me a
chance to talk about them more in depth than i had been able to before and have a
platform with which i could reach a wider audience.
14.
I feel that the strengths of my work is that there is a cohesive image and theme running
throughout all of them. This increases the recognisability of each of them individually
and also peoples ability to recognise me. I feel all my work is very concise and does
exactly what it has to to get the required information across. My logo instantly tells
people my would be profession and the CV provides the important details upfront.
I think my weakest work is my blog because the platform i am using to create it does not
allow me to customise it as much as i would like and therefore it is not as cohesive with
my image. I also feel like my show reel will be amongst the weaker of my artefacts due
to the fact that my current film work so far is not as extensive as it could be.
15.
I think my strongest skill sets currently are my interest in visual media and the industry i
am hoping to gain access to as well as the fact that i consider myself extremely patient
with a keen attention to detail and that i believe i am a very quick to learn new skills.
I feel my current weaknesses are my desire to try and do all the work by myself as
opposed to working as part of a team and my current lack of experience with industry
professionals.
